Trying to steer clear of the whole "Today, in case you've forgotten, is ..." ridiculousness all over the Web today, it's easy to trip over the hoards of greetings and blog/e-mail subject lines that read off as follows: "Happy Patriot Day!!"

A park near my house is having a festival and concert to celebrate Patriot Day ala 4th of July.

Why did this day need to be considered a holiday? Why was it given a name--and "Patriot" of all things which makes it sound as though those who died on this day 6 years ago were fighting the good fight and so on and so forth? They were civilians who were killed, not soldiers giving their last breath to defend their country.

Last year I happened across a memorial service that was being held in a neighborhood near Zoso's apartment. Along with the speeches and the gospel choir coming to sing and support a family who lost one of their loved ones was a girls' choir which sang a song composed for the occasion which had verses that went on about "God smiles on our country" and "the firefighters died to save our democracy."

Wait, what? Umm...

While I know apathy has set in pretty hard for most people when it comes to discussing Sept. 11, I just don't see why a day like that should be called something like "Patriot Day" and be celebrated. Like Hurricane Katrina, Pearl Harbor, and even the Holocaust it's something to be remembered, not celebrated.

Anyone have any thoughts on the subject? Sorry to all of the non-U.S. people who I'm sure are tired of hearing about this.

Patriot day? I never heard about this.

OOT: I was watching history Channel the other day, and there was a show that was like 9/11 was a fake.

BIT: Well, 9/11 last year, no one really celebrated it. The only thing that reminds me of this day are the attacks, and my first day of work at Disney last year.

Though I hate using it as a reference for Debate (since anyone can change it), Wikipedia has a small blurb about Patriot Day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Day

EDIT: Had to fix the link.

This thing was meant as a memorial, not as a celebration.

Seriously, they're celebrating 3000 people dying in an attack by terrorists? Can you think of much that's more messed up?

Not a lot more I can really say here...

It's been, what, six years? It drives me mad... every.. .fucking...year... songs on the raido, TV shows, newspaper adds... I've hated the stupid damn thing since the first year after. I mean... it's been six... fucking... years... since thousands of people kicked the fucking bucket.

Are we going to celebrate it every damn year? 20 years from now? If I have to put up with the whiney mopey bullcrap for much longer, we better decare it a federal holiday so I can get Holiday Pay.

Personally, I think that celebrating Sept. 11th is a load of bull. It was a day like any other... until a bunch of really fucked up shit happened... days like that happen on a regular basis around the world... if we celebrated every one, we wouldn't have time for anything else. We don't need someone telling us that we need to remember it each year for the rest of American History. Yes a lot of people died, but a lot of people have died in Iraq and Afghanistan... you don't see a "Anti-terrorist action memorial day" or anything like that (that I know of anyway), a lot of people died in Pearl Harbor, a lot of People died in Katrina, and Pearl Harbor has a memorial site, but you don't see stuff trying to make you remember it. Sept. 11th is something that will be burned into the memories of everyone who was alive when it happened. I remember walking down the stairs and turning the corner to see my mom and sister watching the news, asking what they were watching when the second plane hit the trade center. I don't need someone telling me that I need to remember that... I couldn't if I wanted to.
