I went with my boyfriend Zoso (Brandon)'s mom to the vet this morning when she was flipping out over her cat, Willie. He contracted jaundice practically overnight, though we aren't sure how.

His normally white with pink complexion had yellowed (a huge sign of liver failure).

While I didn't really care for Willie in life (he was kind of a bastard), he was cute and a sweet cat with others and loved to play fetch.

What really breaks my heart was holding him and petting him just before the nurse took him away and he was purring and when he looked up at me, he seemed to smile with his jaundice yellowed (normally dark green) eyes.

While I absolutely abhor any thought of an animal having to die (though guiltily I am not a vegetarian), at least Brandon's mom (with whom I was crying my eyes out) got closure when it comes to the death of a pet. When my cat Harrison disappeared, I still cry and think of him being harmed by someone or something out there. The mere thought that he's alone and scared makes me upset.

When my grandmother's dog lost her sight, smell, and hearing, and she stumbled blindly around the backyard, the notion of putting this animal that I had grown up with to sleep made me horribly uneasy.

Anyone else ever have to put a pet to sleep? To me, while it is cutting off their suffering, it feels like I'm signing the death certificate of a family member.

I'm not sure if this helps, but "alone" and "scared" aren't things that animals feel, it's human feeling. At least, that's what I think. Animals probably know better than humans that they're going to die sometime. The same thing almost happened to my dog, she couldn't walk and wasn't eating, but she got better after we put her on steroids.
I don't think that they put animals to sleep because the notion that the animals suffer, but that the owner suffers in seeing their pet in pain.

Okay, look at any cat or other animal that runs away at a loud noise, and tell me that they don't get scared.

That seems very redundant. "They don't put the animals down because they are in pain, but because people don't want to see them in pain, which would mean they are putting them to sleep because of the pain."

And I doubt my uncle who works on a ranch puts horses down because he doesn't like to see them in pain, but because it's HUMANE!

That was actually something I wondered about while sitting in the waiting room afterward. This woman was there with her son's guinea pig, and was bringing it in for "the shot." She simply said she was "tired of watching it suffer."

Not to open a can of Terri Schiavo worms here, but it bothered me that putting an animal down was perfectly all right because she was "tired" of watching the guinea pig sit in its cage and not doing anything in its old age of 6. Granted in cases where the animal is in extreme pain and a life that's nothing but lethargy, pain, and helplessness is not a life at all, we don't go to nursing homes and knock out the elderly because there's no life left in them.

I'm sure animals have a better grasp on mortality, being animals they know what's important and their instincts and intuitions come from a primal nature. I suppose we personify our pets because we grow close to them and believe their just as human as we are.

In the end, putting Willie down was probably the best thing for the situation. The initial costs of him being admitted into the animal hospital was $500. They wanted to keep him for 2 weeks at $100 a day, on a drip IV. After getting a second and third opinion with other vets, they said that 90% of the time, the cat doesn't make it through even after all of the hospitalization.

I do agree that it was much more humane, but it still broke my heart to have to watch it happen.

Haha, worms.

I'm not saying we should purge the world of the old and useless, but that there's a time when all living things deserve the right to not live. I think this is when one cannot carry out their function in life, for what is the life of the hunter that cannot hunt?

Well, that's what makes us human, and not animals now doesn't it?

Now, back on topic.

I feel very sorry for you Rogue. When I was very little we had to put down a cat. I was young, so I wasn't very attached, but it was still my first real experience with death.

I have a cat now, and I love him so much. I don't know if I could live without him. I am truly sorry for you. Even though you didn't like the cat, it must have been hard for you to see it carried away like that. Even reading it made me sad...

I was really young when we had to put our dog, Shadow, down. He had contracted some sort of eye disease and was in a lot of pain and starting to go blind on top of it. They didn't let me go to the vet for the event, I stayed home. Still made me sad though.

Poor kitty.

I know your pain Rogue. I still remember when my last dog, Buddy, was put to sleep. I didn't even get a chance to say good-bye (I don't care if anyone thinks it didn't matter!). It was very painful because whether they have feelings or not, they still becomes part of your family. It's sad, but sometimes putting them to sleep is the best way because they are suffering and no amount of medical help can help it. Just take comfort in that you did get closure and that he's no longer suffering. It doesn't make the pain go away, but it does ease it a bit.

I had to have one of my pet gerbils put down a few years ago... In fact I'm struggling not to cry just typing this up.

The three gerbils, Bubble, Squeak and Pickle, Pickle was white with streaks of brown along its back while Bubble and Squeak were black in colour. They were my pets, as in I was the one who fed them, cleaned out their cage, played with them, made little obstacle courses for them... You get the picture. Anyway, the white one came down with some illness and it wouldn't eat or do much in its cage. It seemed to be near death one morning and it was squeaking like mad, so both me and my mum thought the best idea would be to put it out of its misery.

Also, we had to put one of the black gerbils down due to reasons I can't really remember all that well... I know one of them died naturally, and he is buried in my back garden. I hope they all have good next lives... (Reincarnation beliefs, yay!)

So, I think that was about three of my pets died in the space of around a year, and we also had two of our cats die due to pissheads driving cars, so I know your pain. I just hope you get over it a bit better than I ever could... Knowing your pets have died or knowing they have to be put down is pretty painful, especially with the amount of times it's happened to me, but don't let it get you too down.

Don't let what's happening to me currently happen to you, as this thread has stirred up some pretty bad memories... I'll be fine in a bit though. I just live in the comfort that they are probably having good lives right now...

And this is the longest thread I've ever made in this forum.

So, I think we can come to the conclusion that this is something everybody has to go through. No, actually, something that everybody should go through. It helps you face mortality, but on a smaller scale. And is just an experience that, in my opinion, is important for human development.

So the animal hospital sent Zoso's family a card which they received today. It had a cat and dog on the front with halos over their heads and a form apology printed inside that said something like, "We're sorry your pet had to pass away and you were probably close with it and we hope to do more business with you in the future."

The thought was nice, but the card felt so tacky.

I recently had my great grandma and my grandma die. I didn't cry for either of them. But then I had to put down my cat. I cried the whole way to the Vet, the whole time we were there, and the whole way back. I am a sixteen year old male, it takes a lot to make me cry and I was balling. So yeah you aren't alone.
