If you've got the classic red and blue 3D glasses, these pictures of the iceman, Otzi, are freaking awesome.

Went to the Fabergé exhibit at the Bowers Museum and saw a lot of jewelry and other items owned by the Russian Tsar before he and his family were executed.

Saw the "Empress Jospehine" tiara on display. It's cool because it's made with diamonds that were gifted by Tsar Alexander I to Josephine, Napoleon's ex-wife, and the diamonds were later returned to the Russian family when one of Josephine's heirs married Nicholas I's eldest daughter, Maria. The diamonds then found their way to Fabergé, who actually rarely made tiaras.

I rarely find jewelry cool, but these stones got some history.

I pretty much spent the morning reading about Josef Mengele. Nightmarish shit, man.

For some reason I also started compiling a short list of things I've done in my life. Historic things I've seen, visited, touched, and so on. I'm sure it's not much compared to true history buffs or people who are well-traveled, but I was quite pleased on past reflection.

- Went to the Louvre in Paris, saw the Mona Lisa and other pieces
- Visited other places in France (Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, sailed the Seine, Jim Morrison's grave, etc)
- Visited various places in England (Windsor Castle, Canterbury, St. Paul's, etc)

- Watched the Space Shuttle Endeavour fly by my bedroom window a couple times
- On two separate occasions danced the "Time Warp" with the record-breaking number of people (once at the Hollywood Bowl, the other at the West Hollywood Halloween Carnavale)
- Interviewed all sorts of people: senators, comic book creators, authors (including the creators of steampunk), people who did unique and insane things. Interviewed and photographed members of the Westboro Baptist Church, got my picture in textbook

I'm sure my list doesn't impress anyone, but I felt proud.

There's no real way of gauging how much I've seen since I go to a lot of museums, ghost towns, landmarks, and other points of historic interest all over. I know there's a lot I'm forgetting.

I am impressed.

So... I have the chance to go to Istanbul in the spring. I am seriously considering it since I don't know if I will ever get the chance again for the price ($1700-$2000). What can you tell me about Turkey?

I'd do it, if I were you!

The Turkish love entertaining visitors. When you go shopping there, they pull you into the shop and insist on serving you drinks like coffee, apple tea, or raki (a much stronger alcohol than the Greeks' ouzo). They call this their "Turkish hospitality." Sales people can be REALLY pushy, and it's hard to get away when you're sitting in a plush chair with your feet up, drink in hand, while they try to get you to buy a handwoven carpet that's the size of a coffee table for $5,000.

Currently the American dollar is almost twice as strong as the Turkish lira, and supposedly they offer specials for bringing foreign currency into the country.

Since they're a part of NATO they largely don't hate Americans.

Seriously, though, of all the countries I've been to, Turkey's the only one that rolled out entertainers everywhere we went. They had traditional dancers during lunch, and this weird performance at Ephesus for the tourists. It was Cleopatra and Caesar watching some gladiatorial match while they played music from "Ben-Hur" and the theme for the Olympics.

Rick Steves goes on about how he made a tradition 8 years in a row to end every trip to Europe in his twenties (fucking bragger ) in Turkey as his grand finale.

I haven't been to Istanbul, but I'd love to go.

EDIT: Forgot to mention it, but it's worth pointing out. Turkey's a mostly Muslim country. Seemed like everywhere we went you'd hear the call to prayers from a nearby mosque. It was kind of eerie sometimes because some mosques' call to prayers sound like an air raid siren and you'll hear different mosques at the same time.

You'd hear this voice, encouraging you to come pray with them:

Most people in Turkey aren't strict practitioners of Islam. Women don't get called out in the street for not having their heads covered or what have you. It's sort of like here where some people only go to church for Easter and Christmas.

Sounds like fun. And yeah, I figured the Muslim thing would be a prominent feature even though Turkey has a secular government. It's also good to know that I won't have to pretend to be Canadian.

Amusingly, I've never really had trouble in other countries for being American. Matter of fact, in all of the Mediterranean places I went they were quite welcoming, most especially the Egyptians and the Turkish (the two Muslim countries).

Other people I was traveling with did have trouble, though, while we were in England and France. But we were there when we had just invaded Iraq and the English and French were really unhappy with Bush.

I notice people respond well if you just act respectful and don't be a stereotypical American asshole tourist who shouts English slowly at them and demands things.

There's no trying to blend in in places like Turkey. They know you're not from there, and they don't act like you're a foreign piece of shit either.

For some reason it occurred to me that I had never watched the Challenger explode.

So I watched it:

Then I thought about how I'd never listened to the 40 minutes audio tape of the people of Jonestown committing mass suicide.

So I listened to it.

What else is there to take in on the internet?

Well, I know Stitch suggested the 9/11 stuff....

JFK assassination?

In other news, it is fun to take non-history classes with fellow history majors because we can make snippy comments about historical inaccuracies. For example, in economics today our teacher was going on about some rather conservative bullshit and he made the comment, "This isn't the Great Society of the '60s"

I immediately scribbled a note to my friend, Victoria, who sits behind me saying, "I find it amusing that he references the Great Society when LBJ never got that passed into law."

Smug smirks all around.

I've seen the Kennedy assassination footage, and the Zapruder video is freaking brutal. What makes me wonder is why Jackie climbed up on the truck to retrieve all his brain matter that sprayed all over it. Did she expect a doctor would piece it back together?

Yay, smugness.

I ended up just watching this thing on Jonestown on the History Channel. It's over-dramatized as hell, but it showed more images and footage than I'd seen online.

Yeah, I'm weird.

Ended up going to the L.A. County Sheriff's Museum and watching the death tape that showed actor Vic Morrow and these two Asian kids killed in a helicopter accident while filming this Twilight Zone movie.

On Sunday, my mom wanted to see the Madeline Albright pin exhibit, which was cool in parts. Apparently former Secretary of State Albright used to communicate messages and moods with her brooches. There were all these pins on display with pictures of her wearing them with people like Kim Jong Il, Nelson Mandela, and Yasser Arafat. I ended up leaving and sitting in the hall to draw once I got through the more historic ones and the rest of the display cases were just, "Here's a bunch of pins that she has that are shaped like fruit. Here's a bunch that are shaped like birds," etc and so forth.

My mom read some story in there about how Clinton knew all about it and told Vladimir Putin so when Putin would meet with her he had his agents try to find out ahead of time what pin she was going to wear and what it meant.

This piece she wrote for Newsweek explains it a little differently, as though Putin knew without Clinton telling him.

She had some brazen pins, like there were ones shaped like Palestinian rocket launchers in there. The main one in the first case was this snake wrapped around a branch because this Iraqi poet called her "an unparalleled snake" when she criticized Saddam Hussein. The pin was also supposed to convey the American Revolution motto, "Don't Tread on Me."

It was an unexpectedly interesting exhibit (for the most part, as mentioned). I mean, at first it sounds like something only little, old ladies would be interested in, but there was much more to it than shiny lapel decorations.

That is indeed interesting... and rather fitting, given the date.

Now if only my coworkers could talk about that instead of criticizing his daughter's dresses

Where did you find that? That is so awesome!

So yesterday I was watching H2 and there was some special on Constantine and his role in the rise of Christianity that had me screaming at the television. It was like they were making up facts. For example, insisting that the chief deity of the Roman pantheon was Apollo.... *facepalm*
