Heh heh heh, well we all know that I'm a history geek. My favorite is the ancient period, mostly the Classical. I just find the architecture, science, history, and culture of the Greeks and Romans fascinating. And I really love Sparta, though all anyone ever thinks of when they hear the name is Thermopylae. Helen was Spartan by birth, women had a lot of freedom in Spartan society, and there were two kings. Gorgo was a very powerful and smart woman, and it was one of the reasons that Leonidas married her... something they don't really show in film depictions.

Also, you totally need to make a trip to Dodge City. Tis a nice place for a lover of the Wild West. Also St. Joseph, Mo for Jesse James' house and the Pony Express museum... and the riverboat casino is also fun.

<-- is also fond of the wild west.

From what I understood I thought they didn't speak of the Third Reich in Germany if they could help it. There are a number of monographs on the subject that go into more detail, just make sure they are from respectable publishers of history (university publishers are usually quite reliable).

The whole WWI through WWII period is fascinating in European history, especially Germany. I think one of my favorite papers I wrote was on the Weimar Republic and how it was destined to fail.

I could've sworn that Epic was mentioned somewhere, but maybe not. I like them, I don't know if I'd call them the greatest band ever, but they are up there. I am particularly fond of metal bands with female singers.

I love Metal with female vocals, but I'm very picky about them. XD I don't like pop sounding vocals.

Like, I LOVE Nightwish. They were my favorite band before I discovered Epica. But... Anette sorta makes me think of a pop band. :| I mean, she IS a good singer... I just don't adore her like I do Tarja.

I've tried other Metal bands with female vocalists, but I don't get the same chill down my spine that Simone or Tarja gives me.

Yeah, I know what you mean about Anette. It took me awhile before I liked her enough to listen to the album a second time, but I can appreciate her now... though Tarja is better in my opinion. It is weird, since my fiance likes Anette and hates Tarja... I mean, yeah, she does belt it out on occasion but she has so much more range. Oh well, at least she has a solo album.

I also really like Lacuna Coil, I think Cristina has a great voice... also I totally think that Evanescence ripped the band's style off and did it poorly.

The main problem I have with a lot of metal bands with female singers is that they also seem to feel the need to have a male death metal singer... like scremo-death metal ala Cradle of Filth style singer.... and I hate that. Sirenia and Kivimetsan Druidi are like that.

Agreed. I can at least make out what they are saying when they are growling most of the time... death screaming... not so much.

It's really funny because I used to be fine with screamo metal and then I turned twenty and it just started to give me headaches. Never really figured out why.

I know what you mean. In my case I understand the wedding/bridal stuff because my status says "engaged" and it's playing to that.

What pisses me off is the stuff for babies. Seriously, where is that coming from?

I'm just all kinds of pissed off with Facebook lately because of their little changes. The new chat thing that keeps popping up is so fucking annoying that I want to find the person that thought of it and strangle them. Let's see them put THAT on a fucking ad.

I feel so bad for Lola after reading that. I don't blame her for being upset with how badly her daughter treats her. I thought my aunts treated my grandmother bad, but it is nothing like that. Poor woman.

You mean the War of 1812? I know you were probably going for humor there, so I decided to bite.

That is really the thing about history... you have to find a way to get into it, and rote memorization of names and dates never works. There has to be more. I'm sure that's why you were able to learn and retain Masonic history so well, because you felt a connection.

I also love those two channels, but only when there is something good on (Ice Road Truckers is NOT good, nor is any other "reality" show besides Deadliest Catch).

And Mike Rowe is a badass. I want the History Channel to have him narrate something too... I can just picture him talking about the Battle of Salamis... "And while the Spartans were being slaughtered at Thermopylae, the Athenian Navy was just off the coast of Salamis, kicking Persian butt and ensuring the security of western civilization as we know it. Where is the movie about that?"

E - It would be followed by a special Dirty Jobs segment in which Mike spends the day as a rower on a trireme.

That shirt is awesome. I also want to go to Deadwood. I've been fairly near it once years ago, but we didn't go see.

Tee hee, I remember Boot Hill. Dodge City is kinda like that if I remember... though I was a kid last time I was there so who knows what they have done in the last decade.

And yeah, it is interesting to live in a place where "history happened". There is a lot of French & Indian War stuff near me, including the George Washington trail system he took to and from Fort Pitt and other places (dear gods that man got around). And just down the road is this place called the Old Stone House, which was a roadside inn back in the 1700s that is now run by the history department at Slippery Rock University. I haven't had time to go check it out yet, but they do little reenactments and ghost tours and stuff and it sounds awesome.

There is also a place east of Pittsburgh called Old Bedford Village that I think you'd really like, Rogue. They transplanted a bunch of surviving colonial buildings and rebuilt a village where volunteers show how daily life was back then. You see blacksmiths, coopers, type setters, cooks, etc doing their work and explaining what and how they are doing it. It's really neat. They also apparently have events where they do other things like Revolutionary, French & Indian, and Civil War stuff... and a Wild West day. I think in a few weeks they are even doing something on Vietnam. Oh, and some holiday stuff.

I love Loreena McKennitt and Enya!

My musical tastes actually had a really strange development. My parents are old, so until I was around ten all I listened to was the oldies station (I like oldies and classic rock). I was semi-aware of modern music... I had heard of Nirvana, Michael Jackson, etc but it was this separate thing. Then my brother got a girlfriend who had a son my age, we hung out a lot. He listed to the local rap station (this was '95/'96 rap), so I did too... I even owned a cassette tape of Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise (did I mention I am whiter than white and lived ten minutes from Compton?)

So yeah, I got my own radio around that time, found the pop station and went into the teeny bopper stage. I am ashamed to admit this, but I liked Celine Dion and Brittany Spears... I owned the first Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, and Hanson albums... I have long since destroyed them.

I was also familiar with metal at this time. My brother is a huge Metallica and Guns & Roses fan so he made sure I was exposed. I liked it, my mother didn't, and I still wasn't able to watch MTV because "I was too young"

MTV saved me from myself. I started watching it in 8th grade, for the pop videos. I watched pretty much any video that came on, rap, rock, pop, whatever. I was a top 40 fan. Then I watched Twelve Angry Viewers (a show I liked but am kinda glad it's gone because they really did destroy videos, and that is bad). The video they were judging was Tourniquet by Marilyn Manson. I had sorta heard of Manson before, a cousin of mine liked him but that was all I knew. So I watched with rapt attention.

I fucking loved it.

Out went the pop albums, in came Manson, Korn, Rage Against the Machine, and numerous other metal and rock bands and I never looked back. Friends recommend other bands outside of the mainstream, and now those are my favorites. I stopped watching MTV when they stopped playing music by the good bands... or music at all (I missed early 90s MTV and I kick myself for it)

I do like Eminem sometimes, because he sings about stuff other than "ganstas, bitches, and ho's", some of his stuff is funny, and Manson is in one of his videos. I have never understood the ICP obsession, ever. I think I've been able to listen to only one of their songs the whole way though, but otherwise I have never liked them.

But yeah, that is my transition into a metalhead.

Never call yourself worthless. It simply isn't true. Right now you may not be where you want to be, but that does not mean that you will never succeed. You want to better yourself, and you can do it if you put your mind to it. You want a job, apply to every single place you can find that is hiring, even if you'd rather not work there (I recently applied to Walmart and I've stated before that I'd rather die that work for them). You can hunt for a better job later, and then you have something to put on a resume.

Take charge of your life and do something you want to do. Learn to do things for yourself. I am sure Nelrith would be happy to teach you to do whatever he can, as would other friends. Take some classes at the local adult school or community college to improve your computer graphic skills.

I've been the meek little mouse. My last relationship had me acting more like a maid than a girlfriend. I didn't start out that way, but I've always had a rather clingy and self-sacrificing personality in relationships and that one just got out of hand. When you realize that you hate the meek thing, you need to break the habit. Speak your mind, and if your friends are really your friends they will be happy for you breaking out of your shell. A bit surprised, maybe, but happy.

Now, there is nothing wrong with being quiet and making amazing sandwiches... if you like cooking maybe look at culinary classes and turn it into a career. The important thing is that you are doing it for you, not because people tell you to.

In my honest opinion, you seem like a pretty awesome person. What you need to do is look in the mirror and see that as well. I am sure that when Nelrith sees this he will agree with me... if not I will break his legs (kidding!).

The school should have a special program for students with disabilities that you can contact to see if they can help you out at all. I am sure that if they take people with ADD like they do at my school then someone with Agoraphobia is much higher on their list.

Those are people that don't understand how hard phobias are to deal with. It is something that you should work on overcoming, this is true, but it is not something to be dismissed. One potential solution to the agoraphobia problem for school at least, though it would take discipline, is online classes.

The other stuff, like being bipolar, should also be qualified for help with the DSA office (or however they abbreviate it). If possible, try to take only one class at a time so you can more easily afford it until you build your GPA up again, or see if they can't work something out since part of your grades slipping was due to illness.

I don't know how ADD and your medicine connect... but if she does decide to look into it make sure she is thorough since psychiatrists are so quick to say "ADD".

Yeah, it seems like the East Coast has more (recorded) historical spots. I mean, most things on this coast are newer, or where there were old things it's been knocked over. Problem with California is many things have been destroyed through one thing or another (fires, earthquakes, general ruin, etc). There are a few things, but you've gotten find them. I mean, there's the church in downtown that was built in the late 1700s and is still in use.

Don't forget urban development. I wonder how many historical sites were turned into shopping malls, apartment buildings, etc. over the years.

Ah, okay, I get it. Hopefully she can get that sorted out for you.

Don't feel bad about the online class thing... I dropped the only online class I ever took because the teacher failed to communicate anything.

Two DAYS? I still haven't finished the Simarillion. I know most of the stories from other sources and it's like reading the Bible. Granted, I faired better with it than the latter book.

How long did it take you to read all of Lord of the Rings? Just curious.
