So no one starts out in the Company, they're recruited as the RP goes?

Danny was just recently promoted to local mod.

Thor and Vulkar were promoted to full mods.

Cairoi's been a full mod, he was just in an admin color as part of the wackiness of a the board's birthday just like how Darkslaya's been purple for the past few weeks.

Yep. Explaining it seems to have killed the magic.

Heh, they were promoted the same day Danny/Ryan was, so this really is quite recent.

Congrats are definitely in order, and yeah, in the future someone should inform the masses.

I'm looking in your direction, Xeo...

So my house is getting worked on and I'm trapped in my dad's office in the upstairs portion of the house. There's nothing up here but the office, a bedroom, and a bathroom that's persistently out of order, but for that matter I'm stuck in here for the next couple hours.

Heaven help me if I need to go to the bathroom or something.

At least the workers listen to metal.

Take the subject title as you see fit, but I'm talking about trying/doing something for the first time.

Anything.

Not just sex.

As the year's been winding down I've been looking back at all of the things I've done this year for the first time. I'd been keeping a list in one of my journals (however I can't seem to find the damn thing now, so here's to winging it).

I just always find pride in trying new things. Experiences, good or bad, improve a person.

Anyway, as you do new things feel free to post them. Maybe even detail the experience if it's something you think not many other people on the board have done.

Just the things I can remember doing for the first time since the year started:
- "Legally" driven a car : Got my permit and am now driving everywhere, though I still need Zoso with me for it to be legal.
- Changed a flat tire while on the road, all by myself. I'd changed tires before for my dad when I was a little kid and on our driveway, but it was the first time I was out somewhere with someone who wasn't my dad.
- Became a godmother. My god-daughter's turning a year old in a little less than a month. It's amazing the wonderful things that are just sort of sprung on you.
- Been labeled a "roadie," "drum tech," or "band photographer." I REFUSE to be nothing more than a "band girlfriend," "groupie," "hanger-on" or any of that shit girls are labeled when they're friends with and/or dating band members. So yeah, I've been working my ass off supporting Zoso and his band this year.
- Went to the hospital on my birthday. Was visiting my dad whom we had just discovered was severely diabetic and had most of the skin on his back removed and he was left with exposed muscle for a few weeks, and went around town strapped to a WoundVac.
- Power slid across a dancefloor while taking pictures for Zoso's band. I actually was just trying to get a good picture of the bass player while he was head-banging, but the effect was somewhat funny. It's how I got a picture like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/78171287@N00/1310647372/
- Sat up in the middle of the night making an adamantium claw, fake cigar and perfecting how to get Wolverine hair right. Yeah, it was Zoso's costume for a party last month and I'm damn proud of how it turned out. The pictures actually don't do it justice. I know pride's a sin and all, but damn was it made of win at the time.
- Drove out to the middle of nowhere to watch a meteor shower. Was out on the coast at a random rest stop watching the Great Perseids with Patrick (Junkie) and Zoso.
- Sat up all night looking at a lunar eclipse. Zoso and I sat up all night watching the full eclipse that happened in late August. Photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/78171287@N00/1261628145/in/photostream/
- Folded more than 100 origami cranes. I'm up to 110 cranes for the 1000 Cranes for Heroes project that's going on in support of the "Heroes" writers during this strike. I'm folding mine out of old comic books. The first 30 I did and a close-up.
- Tried escargot among other foods.
- Went to a Star Wars-specific convention, Celebration IV. I've been to nearly 30 cons, but had never been to one that was geared ONLY for Star Wars. Finally got to meet my friend Gina and her son Connor. I'd been talking to Gina online for many years. She also used to date another friend of mine, but since she lives down in San Diego, I rarely had an opportunity to meet her and we always somehow missed each other during Comic-Con.
- Shaved a band logo into someone's back hair. Proof. The V in the the circle is Zoso's band (Voidcrush)'s logo. I did the one on the right. That's Zoso's back. The guy on the left is Rob, the boyfriend of a friend of ours, who saw a picture of Zoso's back posted online for a flier, was inspired to join in and shaved the V in his chest hair himself.

More later if I can remember any.

Don't be afraid to add your own list or even add things as you do/experience something new.

Sorry, for some reason the "Delete post" feature's been disabled on the board. Even as a mod, I can't do it.

In regards to the original topic, I suppose when you create characters in your head, they become very real for you and have little stories about them that you just don't have a place to include it. With the Harry Potter books, which are geared towards children but have become a bit more mature as the series progressed, details take a backseat to plot development and adding colorful new characters to the storyline.

But I saw it coming in the first book when Dumbledore's standing before the Mirror of Erised which shows you your greatest desires saying that he sees himself holding a new pair of socks.

OK, not really, but hey this opens the door for other literary wizards to come out of the closet. Gandalf... the wonderful Wizard of Oz, perchance?

Pssh, I still need to get past the first pages of Wicked. I started it, never got around to reading more, and for some reason have been feeling discouraged with all the hype surrounding it (since the musical's been playing here for the past few months and there are ads and talk about it at all times).

Yeah, Professor Marvel/Wizard definitely comes up as a blip.

What about Merlin from the Sword in the Stone?

So I'm sure most of you already knew about the prequel that's coming out next year showing the original Enterprise crew at Starfleet Academy.

J.J. Abrams revealed at Comic-Con that Zachary Quinto would be playing Spock in the new feature film. Today a photo leaked of the make-up tests. It's a bit dark, but check it out:

It's actually a bit eerie how close he looks to classic Spock. More photos can be found here: http://www.jfxonline.com/jfxonline/2007/11/12/exclusive-quinto-as-young-spock/

Also, although it's old, but most people haven't seen it, here's Galacicast spoofing J.J. Abrams pitching a Star Trek prequel show to the media:

Pretty much as FX/Super Hiro said, the Company's motives aren't exactly clear. They want to believe that they're good and doing the right thing, but characters like Noah Bennet (HRG) who used to work for the Company have come to believe that it's all a lie.

If you need a comparison, think of how in X-Men Xavier finds other mutants using Cerebro, seeking out ones who are just discovering their power and aren't sure how to use it themselves or are too dangerous to themselves and other people, so he goes out and brings the X-Men with him to gather up the dangerous ones, bring them back to his institution, teach them how to use their power, and then recruit them into the X-Men after they've worked it out.

Some in the Company believe it's a good organization that only doing what Xavier does, problem is they don't exactly let some people go and they keep them as prisoners.

Heroes, in many ways, is X-Men meets the X-Files.

For further, more in-depth explanation: SPOILER WARNING! Only continue if you don't want to find out for yourself watching the series!!

Again, SPOILER WARNING

The first season explained regarding the Company and if you'd consider them good or evil:

Spoiler:
Bennet, who at the time worked for the Company and who's Claire's foster father, adopted Claire after she was left with him by the Company with them saying that if and when her powers manifest to let them know so they can take her.

In the meantime, Bennet seeks out people like Matt (mind reader), Isaac (paints the future), Nathan (flying politician), Ted (human atomic bomb), and other such characters within the series with his partner, the Haitian (stifles others from using their powers and can erase memories). Bennet's cover is that he's a "paper salesman" for Primatech Paper. Primatech was often a holding cell for some of the characters when they were abducted in the first season.

Typically when the Company sends out agents, they send them in pairs--one person an ordinary human, the other has powers. Bennet's original partner, Claude (power of invisibility), was "killed off" by the Company in that Bennet was instructed to kill him, but right after shooting him Claude went invisible and got away only to show up in the series to teach Peter how to hone his own power (a story for another time). I can't remember if the Company wanted Claude dead because they felt he was going rogue or if he knew too much.

Moving on, Sylar (power to know what's wrong with things, how to fix them and apparently takes others' powers by absorbing their brains somehow. Seriously no one knows or is sure what he does with brains when he gets them or how he absorbs the power, so that part's still a mystery) was captured by the Company after he nearly tried to kill Claire at her Homecoming. The intent of the Company was to monitor him and keep him contained, however, he escaped (another story for later). Sylar's responsible for the death of several characters and many who were on the show for barely even an episode.

Among the more positive things, they managed to get Isaac to clean up his drug habit and taught him that he doesn't need to use heroin to paint the future.

The major storyline of which the Company was tied last season was in the grim future of much of New York blowing up in a mysterious atomic explosion. As it turned out, Linderman (power to heal other organisms) who's an older associate of the Company which he described as being founded to save the world using the people who have powers to help all those who don't have any, was plotting for New York to explode in that those who survived would mourn, but then become united as a force to be reckoned with. Nathan who would have, at the time, been an elected official who could ease the pain of the mourning city would be regarded as a hero and then be elected to the presidency--if the plans went off without a hitch.

In a way, the Company wanted New York to blow up for the good of people coming together and becoming a unified nation (think how after 9/11 people were suddenly ridiculously patriotic and seemingly racism and other things halted because people united against the terrorists and so on). This story was actually lifted from Alan Moore's Watchman. Seriously, read it. It's AMAZING and it's going to be a movie soon.

If I missed anything since I'm just writing this all off the the top of my head, someone please add.

Pretty much anyone older than you is going to talk to you like that until you die. Seriously. 22 and still getting talked down to from 30-somethings for crying out loud.

Well, I'm going out of town in a few hours. I don't even get these last moments of time at a computer to check other things on the Internet. I'm stuck proof-reading/rewriting my mom's homework for her Bible study class at Loyola.

FUCK!

EDIT: As I'm going over her manuscript, it's getting more and more aggravating since she sometimes writes in broken English.

FUCK!

The Wizard of Oz is an allegorical tale depicting the Great Depression in that naive Kansas-dwelling Dorothy represents the farmers trying to find their way home as the tornado of change tears their simple world apart, forcing her to take the Yellow Brick road, the gold standard, on her way to the Washington D.C. presented as the Emerald City in the story.

The Tinman conveys the hardship of the American industrial worker whose heart is only regained after joining with Scarecrow who also illustrates the archetype of the farming class.

The Cowardly Lion's just a pussy.
