Heh, I think at the time I wrote that post out I was in a rather dreary mood with a lot on my mind. Sorry about that.

Sucks about the people acting like 6-year-olds.

Anyway it's coming up on 5 a.m. and I'm supposed to be writing a paper on a book I didn't finish that was for my history class. Fuck. Oh well.

EDIT: Finished the paper at 8, got to school at 8:45. Note on the door. Class canceled for today.

Pretty good. Dinner and all of that was pretty typical. Last year Brandon's grandma wanted us to be "like those TV shows" where we state one thing we're thankful for. This year, Brandon's aunt wanted us to play this game of having to say one thing we have to do, then turning it around to say I'm thankful that I get to do these things because we have something other people might not.

The highlight was probably standing on a mountain later that night watching a lightning storm over the next town while we were under completely clear skies.

The trip was pretty fun overall.

Have you ever stayed up all night working on something for the next day and then realized all your toil was for not?

Yeah, I had Bennet on my mind, but Elle and Sylar's tryst didn't factor in for me as "main storyline," like this season's main villain, Arthur "Dallas" Petrelli.

What's more I'm really tired of the twisting things just for the sake of twisting, then twisting them back because it was already too crazy to begin with. Sylar's paternal origins for example.

I knew Bryan would be coming back after Pushing Daisies was announced as canceled. I've been hoping he'd return to sort some things out.

I'm still not quite sure what the point of taking Claire to the past will accomplish, but we'll see.

They get you for "overpayment" now? Whoa.

Getting middle-of-the-night phone calls from boyfriend's brother asking when I'm heading to Arizona for Christmas with his family because he's declared that he's going to hitch a ride IS NOT COOL. Get some friggin' sleep, you stoner.

Same goes for you, friend, who suddenly wants to know if another friend is working or at someone's house. How should I know? Call her!!

Fucking A, I need to go get something to eat so I can take my medication and not be nauseous for the next few hours.

I got one that's been festering for a few years since it seems to be everywhere I've gone.

Fuck you, little shits who when people are in a bind to use the computer lab for school work or papers they need printed out right away, you're looking at MySpace.

This problem was going on at Long Beach City College, and it's fuckin' happening here at Cal State Fullerton too. There's a line RIGHT NOW that's 40 people long just to get into the computer lab and the chick next to me is asking me if I'm "good at MySpace" because she and her friends are working on their MySpaces and need help with HTML coding.

I'm actually working on a paper right now for history and was so angered by the question I came on here to post in case you were wondering.

Fucking A.

There was far less fanfare for this as there was last year when the Ask A Ninja ninja was doing shows and appearances in Hollywood to commemorate it.

But as I mentioned in Nifty SoCal, there's much less advertising for this as these is Talk Like a Pirate Day, which is becoming more and more overrated as the loud-mouthed Renaissance faire fun-killers have become aware of it.

Tonight's episode made things really look up.

My only thing is the super soldier storyline is coming really close to Captain America's origin.

Yeah, it's definitely better than last season.

Actually they're just going on hiatus for the winter like most other shows do. The season will continue again in a couple months. They're just saying it's the last episode of the year to hook more people into watching it next week.

My list is pretty much Bennet, Hiro/Ando, Sylar, Matt, Nathan, and Monica (please bring her back).

Peter's regained some ground with me since he's lost his powers. And his interaction with Sylar this last episode was pretty good.

Yeah, but also in season 2, one of the characters Adam was hunting down from the original Company board mentioned that shooting him in the head would permanently kill him, which he further explained to Peter, "There's no coming back from that one."

It's sort of weird though, since both Claire and Peter had brain injuries in first season, but came back to life when the item was removed. If a bullet goes clean through you, couldn't it be assumed that your brain will mend?

And then it makes it even stranger when Sylar's proclaiming Claire can't die and neither can he in this season's premiere.

I mean, they have hinted that decapitation will kill those with spontaneous regenerative powers, ala the Highlander franchise.

But I guess the clincher is that the Haitian is there. If he stays there long enough for the heart to stop pumping and the brain to stop functioning, he can make sure the person dies.

Funny that no one's asked the Haitian his name.

I was under the assumption that when Kinsei said a bullet to the head would kill him permanently that he meant even one that went in and came out the other end. Eh, no matter.

EDIT: Bryan Fuller talks about his return to the show as a consultant :

Exclusive: Bryan Fuller's Rx for 'Heroes'

Pushing Daisies fans will probably take a hit out on me for saying this, but something good has come out of the comedy's untimely death: It's freed up Bryan Fuller to rescue Heroes from the villain known as "What the Frak Have They Done to a Once-Great Show?!" In his first interview since rejoining the series as a consultant, the writer-producer-genius behind such acclaimed season 1 hours as "Company Man" reveals where it all went wrong, what it'll take to make it right, and who's gonna have to be sacrificed before that can happen.

AUSIELLO: Where did Heroes go wrong, in your opinion?
BRYAN FULLER: It became too dense and fell into certain sci-fi trappings. For instance, in the “Villains” arc, when you talk about formulas and catalysts, it takes the face off the drama. And I think the goal for everybody is to put a face back on the drama. You have to save something with a face; otherwise you don’t understand what you’re caring about. I thought the "Villains" arc started out very interestingly, and then became sort of muddy and dense and I couldn't get my hooks into the characters to understand their motivations. I also started to feel confused about what people's abilities were. One of the great things about the first season is that the metaphor for their abilities was very clear. Those metaphors seem to have gotten complicated in the past two seasons. I share that concern with everybody on the writing staff. It's not like I'm coming in and saying, "This is what you need to do to fix it!" Everybody knows what needs to be fixed and everybody is sort of rowing in that direction.

Your work starts with episode 19, yes?
Yes. I'm fortunate to be coming into a very exciting story line. [Former co-exec producers] Jeph [Loeb] and Jesse [Alexander], before they left the show, set so many great events in motion with the "Fugitives" arc [kicking off Feb. 2]. It really is a fresh start. All of the characters are back in their real lives. You see Peter as a paramedic. Claire is looking for colleges. We get away from the world of formulas and quasi-magic.

Are the "Fugitives" episodes leading up to 19 solid?
Yes. Episodes 14, 15 and 16 are amazing. The whole "Fugitives" arc starts out very strongly, and then it gets a little dense in the middle in terms of the mythology. So I came in right at the point where everybody was realizing, "Oh, we're getting too dense here and we need to put faces on stories because there is no face to a formula; there is no face to saving the world." So it's turning this big ship back into a character stream, and everyone on the writing staff shares that desire. We need to get back into a character place, because that's where this story started: Very clean, superhero metaphors to everyday life. That's the path that we're taking. But it is a big ship so it's going to take a little while to turn it.

Any plans to trim the sprawling cast?
People will die. And some will return. Matt’s wife [Janice] comes back. We’ll find out what happens when you have a superbaby. We're also going to tell fewer stories per episode. We're going to limit it to three or four with one big one that you can wrap the stories around. We're altering the structure of the show so that there's a very clear A story that takes up a larger percentage of the show so that that story gets traction.

Are you looking at Season 4 as a complete reboot of the series?
It's not necessarily a reboot as much as it is going back to the basic spirit of the show and pulling people back in. I don't think the issues with the show have been about the serialization as much as about the density of the stories that have been serialized.

Will you be part of the show next season?
That's the idea.

Will the recent behind-the-scenes changes at NBC impact the show at all?
It's really hard to imagine Heroes without [Universal Media Studios president] Katherine Pope, because she has been such a proponent of the show. She was so instrumental in [setting] the tone and style of the show in the first season. She is as vital a piece as any of the players on the show at this moment. Her contribution can't be undervalued. It'll be very interesting to see how things shake out.

What's your working relationship with series creator Tim Kring been like since returning?
It's actually been very positive.

Who gets final say: you or Tim?
Tim. I’m a consultant. My job is to help facilitate the vision of the show, and the vision has been a little inconsistent. But “Fugitives” is such a great sea change. I think people who have been critical of Heroes will come back.

EW also has a story on who's going to play Sylar's father: http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2008/12/john-glover-cas.html (Only slightly spoilerish, unless you count seeing who's going to be Gabriel's daddy, then yeah, it's a spoiler)

Though IMDb has been known to be wrong before (prior to Zachary Quinto being revealed as Sylar they had Sean Bean listed in the role), you give me a lot of hope, Anthony.

And AGREED! She had the most potential for an ORIGINAL power on the show (well, more accurately, non-X-Men power, I'm not sure if there are any comic characters with muscle memory).

Indeed, St. Joan lives!

Finished Tortilla Curtain and got halfway through Old Breed before I had to skim it for answers on my paper. I may finish it somewhere down the line, but I don't think it will be anytime soon. It gets pretty gruesome at parts.

Anyway, other books I've completed lately:
The Boys: The Name of the Game (Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson)
1602 (Neil Gaiman, Andy Kubert)
Usagi Yojimbo: Mother of Mountains (Stan Sakai)
X-23: Innocence Lost (Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost)
Death: Time of Your Life (Neil Gaiman, Chris Bachalo, Mark Buckingham)
The Boys: Get Some (Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson)
And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks (Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs)

Am now working my way through a fuck-ton of assigned reading for my American Studies final on Monday.

Otherwise my reading for pleasure books at the moment are:
Water for Elephants (Sara Gruen)
Sweet Trade (Elizabeth Garrett)
Fables: War and Pieces (Bill Willingham)

I'm somewhat annoyed and frustrated to boot. I have SOOOO much to read through for my American Studies final tomorrow and I can't seem to buckle down and get it done.

What's annoying me, though, is this thread someone started on LiveJournal wanting to know of any good movies about California culture and they said if they can't find anything they'll just show clips of episodes of Full House.

WTF?

Slightly more irritating were the serious responses of Clueless, Bring It On, "You could use scenes from The OC," and Encino Man. Of course, most of the people giving suggestions were from other countries (U.K., Canada, etc), but I still felt somewhat indignant as a native Californian who's an amateur local history buff.

I can't believe such a small thing is side-tracking me. Argh... Well, this and probably my complete apathy toward studying for this thing.

Not that I'm really complaining, but I'm wondering why Gambit's there. It looks like they've got a young Storm and possibly a young Bobby Drake, and they've got Remy there as an adult. In keeping with the X-Men storyline, Gambit's probably around Storm's age (and he doesn't have a healing factor like Wolvie and Deadpool).

I'm also a bit surprised to see what looks like a teenage Emma Frost (the girl who forms diamond skin near the end of the trailer). She'd be a welcome addition as well.

Didn't expect to see Blob, but whatev.
