Back from Vegas.

Walked the Strip last night with my cousin, and this morning walked the entire expanse of the new Hoover Dam bypass twice with my mom before we went to the funeral.

The drive back wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't pouring rain day and night since Friday. So many puddles in the road, almost made us skid. People speeding in the rain would hit these puddles and spray the water onto our windshield and make it COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE to see through it.

Read "Ooku" 3 and 4, on the short road trip to Vegas I took this weekend.

I started trying to finish "On Stranger Tides," but because it was dark and rainy the entire way back to L.A., my dad insisted I turn the flashlight off as it was distracting him. i

I'll restart "Transmetropolitan" later today. Since I didn't bring them with me, I'll probably spend the morning finishing "Walking Dead" Volumes 2 and 3.

Best of luck, Elara!

Right now it's blue skies in the LB area with the sun shining, but I'm sure it's just a trap to trick us out of the house and get drenched once more.

Like I've said, drive safe. Glad to hear you've made it to Texas already. It was raining throughout Nevada and Arizona last weekend. I imagine Flagstaff was snowy. It was a month ago.

And, yeah, there goes the rain again... yep, I knew it was a trap.

So... seen anything cool?

Well.. this will be amusing. I started filling out this meme a week ago and left my laptop on with the tab of this open, occasionally adding another answer and then forgetting about it again as I write new posts in another tab.

I'm too lazy to change answers.

What was the last...

...thing you ate?
- Ham and cheese sandwich in a folded over waffle instead of bread.

...person you talked to on the phone?
- Patrick wanting to know when we could hang out when he comes into town.

...person you e-mailed/private messaged?
- Andrea, on Facebook.

...person you hugged?
- Other than Brandon, a lot of family I have either not seen in a decade or more or was just introduced to.

...person you kissed?
- Brandon.

...time you laughed?
- Just now, going through Google street view through New Orleans. Found some interesting graffiti.

...time you cried?
- I shed a few tears at the funeral yesterday.

...movie you watched?
- In the theater: The Warrior's Way.

...DVD you watched?
- Happiness of the Katakuris. So random...

...video tape you watched?
- Either Cinderella or The Little Mermaid, I think. It was for a research project I was doing for American studies on the Disney princesses.

- Christian Bale singing the Power Puff Girls theme song.

...book you finished?
- Ooku, volume 4.

...heart-to-heart you had with someone?
- Brandon.

...person you met?
- Tons of family I've never seen before and may never see again.

...person who died in your life?
- My grandmother's brother-in-law, Irving. He came to visit a lot when I was a kid, but I haven't seen him in more than a decade. Poor man. We went to his funeral that was held yesterday.

...new food you tried?
- Fried plantain stuffed with black bean and rolled in sugar.

...new thing you tried (event, action)?
- Walking the full expanse of the newly opened Hoover Dam Bypass, twice. It opened two months ago.

...time you went around the house in just your underwear?
- Don't remember.

...time you weren't fully sober?
- Thanksgiving at Brandon's grandmother's. Drank a wine-sized bottle of cider in under 30 minutes.

...you "geeked" out?
- Talking to my cousin for hours on end Sunday night about all kinds of things. We were weirding our parents out.

...thing you read in the bathroom?
- Bread Givers, since I was reading it on a deadline.

...bargain you made?
- Bought thick wool gloves from the Army/Navy surplus store for $4.

...thing you planned?
- Currently planning the road trips Brandon and I are taking this winter.

...award you won?
- Same awards as the last time.

...piece of toast you had?
- The rosemary and cheese foccacia bread for my ham steak sandwiches. Soooo good.

...present you gave?
- Hmm... I suppose some newspapers for a friend's paper she was writing. I gave them to her as a surprise.

...porno you saw?
- Not sure. Probably this terrible Star Wars one from Europe I saw with Christina a year ago if I remember right.

- I don't sing in the shower.

...song you had stuck in your head?
- Phil LaMarr impersonating Chris Rock singing lullabies.

...thing you marked on your calendar?

...errand you ran?
- Getting my grandmother some chicken for lunch.

...drink you had?
- Water.

...cool thing you found?
- I found the bar Hunter S. Thompson visited in Vegas. It's a gelato stand now. Soooo disappointing.

- A few minutes ago. It was so tangled.

...person you talked to over AIM, YIM, etc?
- Brandon, on Facebook chat.

...thing you bought?
- Those Army/Navy surplus gloves, some campfire prongs, and a bottle of microbrew cider.

...game you played?
- I re-played Devil May Cry not to long ago.

...new place you visited?
- A church in Vegas, for the funeral. It's the first church I've ever been to where they're giant crucifix has the nails through Christ's wrists instead of his hands.

...thing you celebrated?
- Getting an internship. Got to have dinner at this local barbecue joint I like with the greatest mac 'n' cheese ever.

...dream you had?
- I dreamt I was studying mermaids and discovered my grandmother used to be one. Then I freaked out because I realized I was a week late to school and I was frantically trying to e-mail my teachers and my boss to say that I had a good excuse, so please don't drop me from my classes.

...thing you dressed up for (costume/formal/etc)?
- Daily Titan banquet, I suppose.

...website you visited outside of the board?
- My student portal on the university website to see if my grades were posted yet.

Christmas is in a few days. Any plans?

Honestly, I can't believe it's already here. I feel like Thanksgiving was last week.

Christmas is pretty much going to be spent at home with family. This is the first year having my grandmother living with us, and it looks like people are coming in from out of town.

We usually head out to Arizona late Christmas, but looks like we're headed out next week and spending New Years out there. Hopefully we'll see the big meteor shower while we're out there too. The skies are clearer and you can see SOOOO many more stars.

I'm really looking forward to going back next week.

Fuck the vast majority of Nevada drivers. In the two days I was in Nevada there was off-and-on rain and I've got people constantly trying to merge into my car, not stopping or even slowing down at corners, and speeding around me and stealing parking spaces while I wait. They also aren't familiar with spacing themselves out on highways, allowing people to merge on or change lanes, and you know, avoid rear-ending eachother.

It's fucking bedlam.

We still haven't set up our Christmas tree. My parents bought it more than a week ago when the rains first started, left it on the porch to dry and haven't brought it in.

Having gone to many liberal arts classes, I've frequently heard people refer to "Christian mythology" when addressing specific aspects of it, particularly when they were talking about stories and figureheads from the Old Testament. Most of the time, someone will scoff about it being called such. Heh.

I am the only biracial person in my generation on both my mom and dad's sides.

My cousin, who married a white man and had three kids, has a daughter that many people in the family compare to me in terms of appearance and how we speak. Apparently she's exactly like me when I was her age.

Fuck the disappearance of cool things in Vegas -- Star Trek Experience, Carousel Bar, Rat Pack era casinos, etc. I get it. It's constantly changing to stay relevant, but damnit, if I want a rum-filled Borg sphere on a revolving platform in the middle of an Egyptian pyramid filled with gaudy statues and people in costume GIVE IT TO ME!

Read "Pinocchio Vampire Slayer," which was put out by Slave Labor Graphics. It's not bad, especially being a short read.

Powering through the first seven books of "Transmetropolitan" now, though I'm reading it while taking breaks cleaning our room.

Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer did a Christmas video that they posted today, re-enacting "Labyrinth" with sock puppets:

But yeah, when my parents wanted to sit down and open gifts and we finally got my grandmother to come over and sit down with hers, she said, "Oooh, I won't open these until Christmas."

"It is Christmas!" Brandon and I said in almost perfect unison.

"What? I thought it was the 14th!!"

... She's losing it.

We're probably going to see family friends in a bit. Might wander up to the snowy mountains for a bit. Thankfully it's been clear blue skies for the last few days.

Quark's Bar has many great memories for me. Levi and Ashley's wedding reception, Rocky Horror con wrap party, hanging there with Lee and our friend Brandi a couple days after my 21st...

Heh, I just realized I've only legally drunk there once. Then again, it's Vegas. They're more concerned if you are gambling underage than if they sell you a few drinks and forget to card you.

Warp Core Breeches were the best, especially sharing them with friends. Unless you had a friend who went, "You get the next one!" and drank it all by themselves using all the straws at once. *Cough Cough*

Indeed, fuck you, Vegas.

You have a GREAT-niece who's moved out with a boyfriend already? When you said that I was picturing a 5-year-old at most.

Then again, I'm an only child and would never know what it's like to have even direct nieces and nephews.

Christmas here was actually more uneventful than expected with it just being my parents, my grandmother, and Brandon. My cousin, who lives in Vegas, was saying he would be out here for Christmas on Saturday at his mom's, but we were never called to come over. Oh well.

Brandon and I went hiking in Griffith Park for a while. Afterward, ate at this pleasant, candlelit French cafe. Came home and killed a bottle of wine while snacking on ham.

Since Brandon and I would normally be in Arizona by now, people have been calling assuming we're there already. We're heading there Wednesday.

So... things are continuing to suck.

When my parents went to South America for a couple weeks, earlier this month, my aunt flew down from the Bay Area to take care of my grandmother. Since I wouldn't have the time to watch Lola 24/7 since I was still going to class at the time and was taking finals the second week they were gone, it was more to help me out.

My dad told Sonya she wouldn't be needed those two weeks, and when she threatened to quit if my dad didn't pay her anyway, he just told her to go ahead and do so. Since we didn't like her much anyway, we were actually kind of relieved.

When they got back from their trip and my aunt left (who took the time to go through the house for documents and valuables apparently), Lola started asking where Sonya was. Even though my dad kept telling her she quit, she got really upset thinking we either fired her or a woman she considered her only friend left her.

Anyway... Lola's mind is continuing to go. I mentioned in the holiday plans thread that she didn't realize it was Christmas.

I woke up this morning to her and my mom arguing about money yet again.

I don't know if I explained before, but my aunt who lives in L.A. pretty much took all of Lola's money and made herself the irrevocable executor and such. Lola insists she didn't sign any documents making her such (she did, though), and she keeps railing about how she wants her money back.

My parents keep arguing with her to stop worrying about it and just live her life and not think about it any more. It's the same fight over and over again. Today, it was over her saying someone stole her will from a suitcase (probably the aunt who was down here). My parents, enraged that she keeps picking fights, just picked up left the house.

I'm sick of this shit, because I'm always the one who's stuck at home having to watch her, and they leave for hours at a time whether or not I have plans. They went to see my dad's sister today and said they would only be gone two hours, which really panned out to 9 hours. In the meantime, Lola kept trying to get me to take her side against everyone and call up my aunts to curse them out.

When I mentioned I'd be out of town this coming week, they kept yelling that I had to be home by a certain day to take care of her.

What's really pissed me off was how my aunt (from the Bay Area) started chastising my parents for how I would be starting my internship soon and they should be making me stay to watch Lola.

I mean, I get it. She's my grandmother. And she's a human being. Everyone's treating her like a burden, and I suppose with how much responsibility I've been shouldering lately, I've been getting more and more annoyed about the situation.

Honestly, this whole situation is making me upset. None of the other grandchildren give a shit about Lola, and when they see her they kiss her ass. Her own daughters are only concerned about her money, and my mom is getting stressed out with having to reassure her that she shouldn't worry about money.
