Not much. I can take some, but if it's so hot you can't taste anything else about it, you can keep it.

Fuck your best friend's other friends and feeling immensely annoyed with them when you're just trying to have fun with your friend whom you haven't seen in months.

Most of the other friends were fine (great, even), but this one girl... sheesh.

Also fuck sunburns. Especially when you've put on SPF 70 sunscreen, had it bond with your skin 10 minutes before going into the sunlight and then returning with frikkin' lobster back, with the bra and tank top straps and shirt hem tanned into there. I still blame the girl mentioned in the prior Fuck you.

Congrats, Elara. That's great news!

Yeah, there's a lot of craziness going on involving pregnancy. Got some good news on that front, though. Brandon and I got a card yesterday that was a sonogram. His Aunt Michelle's pregnant! She and her husband have been trying so hard for the last few years and I'm so happy for them. Their little girl is expected 11-11-11.

Also, I got to spend time with Christina and Jayne a couple days ago. It was awesome.

But now I've got a really bad sunburn on my back... and sore arms. Had to do some heavy-duty weeding at my grandmother's house, which now has a For Sale sign in the front yard.

Fuck whoever coined the phrase "throw under the bus." It's so fucking annoying to hear, and it's in almost every other thing I watch on TV right now (it's uttered in every episode of "Hell's Kitchen" these days). "She's trying to throw me under the bus" or "Don't throw me under the bus!!" has almost literally replaced "I didn't come here to make friends" in reality shows.

Rosemary focaccia dough, alfredo sauce, lots of cheese (mozzarella and asiago), sausage, mushrooms, meatballs, grilled chicken, basil, all cooked in a deep dish.

Not very imaginative, but it sounds good right now.

EDIT: Forgot to name it. Uh... Comfort Pie.

Whose was the last wedding that you attended, and are they still together?

Oh my fucking god. Fuck women who get pregnant, KNOW they're pregnant, and yet continue with their substance abuse. I thought you were smarter than that. Worse yet, you're solely worried that when the doctors recently made you submit a urine sample that it would harm your job.

FUCK YOU! Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you!!

think I read Of Mice and Men in a matter of a day. Not that I needed to read it for anything, I just somehow powered through it. It took me about a day and a half to read Brave New World.

So I won tickets to this huge Star Trek con in Las Vegas happening next week. Despite being incredibly broke, Stitch and I are going for it.

In the meantime, my computer still has tabs open for the Elder Abuse hotline. I dialed it a couple times yesterday, but got one of those "All operators are busy" messages.

I'm still really hesitant to call. This is REALLY going to piss off the rest of the family.

Yeah, on Friday (when Lola is SUPPOSED to come so I can watch her and my aunt insisted she didn't want to), I called both of my parents on the issue. I'm not even joking about my aunt's house. It's dingy, she and her husband are CONSTANTLY smoking, it's cluttered, it's FULL of yapping dogs and their dried up shit EVERYWHERE.

They never bathe her (which is something my mom does when we get her, which is rarer and rarer these days), and all they do is complain about how bad she smells. When we get her she smells of urine and excrement -- and we haven't bee allowed to take her in more than two weeks now.

On top of that she's got my grandmother's money and is using it whenever she feels the whim.

These are ALL forms of elder abuse.

When I talked with my parents about these issues, they both told me that they fully agree, but they don't want to start anything because it's just going to get worse. My dad, being anti-government (considering himself more of a libertarian these days), kept insisting that it would be best to sort this out without being the county or state into it. But then he said, that since my aunt always blames him whenever things go wrong, I should get marching orders from Mom on this. I call her and she's also very hesitant -- she's lately been falling back on saying that she's trying not to think about Beth (that aunt) and her shit and concentrating more on saving for our upcoming vacation.

I just don't know what to think. I don't think of my mom saying that as being selfish, but rather that this is just going to drag on either way and she's getting so aggravated that she'd rather think about something positive for at least a couple months before we're forced to reckon with reality once more.

I suppose I'll wait until November (which I hope things get sorted out by then). Either way the painter that Beth hired to do my grandmother's house, which is now officially for sale, REALLY sucked. He and his people didn't take anything down from the walls (saying we didn't have to) and just painted around shelves and light switch covers, getting paint all over them and the carpet (since the asshole obviously didn't cover the floors either.

Sorry to hear about the job search, Elara. I know that feeling. Hopefully this isn't a coastal prejudice deal like we always hear about from that side of the country. That's the thing, I never hear about it from this side, but it's like there's a rivalry that this side doesn't really care about. Hmm..

And yeah, Star Trek. We're thinking about crashing another con going on on the Strip. We'll see where that gets us.

Been watching a lot of Gordon Ramsay shows lately, specifically Hell's Kitchen andMaster Chef. I'll even watch Kitchen Nightmares when it's on.

I'm not much of a culinary expert, but for some reason I've become addicted to watching these shows over the years.

Heh, when Brandon and I did this tour of Colossal Cave in Arizona, and the tour guide started with asking people about where they're from no one paid any mind to anyone else's responses, but when the moment I said "Los Angeles," out came the stares and dagger eyes. Hell, the girls directly in front of us, who joyously announced they were from San Francisco, gave us the DIRTIEST looks.

Well, good luck with the Pennsylvanians. I can already tell when Brandon and I hit up Oregon and Washington we're going to have to go through the same thing next month.

Not to mention all the crap we'll get for being Americans in the Middle East in a couple months.

This question is oddly difficult to answer for some reason.

Maybe those Babybel cheeses. There's something about cheese that seems to transcend time periods, and it's the perfect thing to munch on after sneaking it into Renaissance faires or eating while listening to music of the era.

I guess, cheese in general is my ideal snack. We took a cooler-load of drinks, cheese, and prosciutto to this film screening at the La Brea Tarpits last weekend and it was awesome.

Again, sort of a difficult question for some reason.

There are TONS of products that Trader Joe's has stopped carrying over the years and I get unfathomably bummed when I go and can't find them and you never. See. Them. Again.

I'm not sure what's gotten me the most bummed out, but it's among the three cheese cannelloni (regular item not there any more), Mexican hot chocolate Christmas cookies (seasonal item that was made once and never again), and the salted dark chocolate caramel bar (new item that sold out and they aren't sure if they'll make any more). Also the Red Dragon mustard seed and ale cheddar. It was a spotlight cheese, REALLY good. Can't find it now.

Curse you, Trader Joe's!!

What's something you've done or accomplished that others thought was great, but you didn't care about?

Posted on 08-10-11 11:02 PM, in London Riots Link
I wrote out a REALLY long post and it has since been lost.

I'd rather not try to re-write it, but the gist of which was that 1) this is a very unfortunate situation that seems more like malcontents wanting to riot than a mass of people genuinely concerned for the deceased.

And 2) I'm tired of the international media (BBC, etc) comparing this to the L.A. riots which happened one year shy of two DECADES ago. It's one thing if you're from Los Angeles (or SoCal, as Elara and I are) and you're breaking the comparison because it's something you identify with, but what about the rest of the world (other states, even)?

There have been more recent riots, with greater damage even. I'm looking squarely at you Egypt, Tunisia, and Nigeria. Greece has been flaring up with riots off and on for two years now, as can be said with much of Africa and the Middle East.

I mean, there were riots in 2005 in Australia regarding a couple of teenagers being killed by the police. No comparison?

Anyway, hope London and the surrounding towns can sort this all out soon.

It's Congregation. Loads and loads of beers either draught or bottle.

The carne asada bakes at the Costco we go to are just terrible in that they have the crust even and it breaks and spills in the middle, and the flavors just don't seem to go well together. We've come to love the meatball bakes, but they appear to have stopped making (or at least selling) them.

So new things tried/seen/learned/etc:
- Took my mom for sushi for the first time (tried new Vegas and Rose rolls)
- Ate at the new Mexican place around the corner (it was crap)
- Went to a Grand Performances event for the first time - it involved mariachi, sign spinners, marionettes, a slide show, and free slices of Jell-O cake
- Try Famima cheddar pretzel poppers
- Missed a flight (I've missed a flight before due to rain in Indiana while we were on the runway, but this time around was due to the other person being late) - made the ticket agent smile and got put on the next flight
- Had to go through the full body scanner for the first time
- Attended San Francisco's gay pride for the first time
- Watched the entirety of a gay pride parade
- Tried this diner in Palo Alto - Caribbean pancakes and a chocolate peppermint shake. I've never been sooooo full in my life.
- Sampled Barefoot's moscato, which I seem to be drinking at least once a week now
- Visited the Asian Art Museum - watched a lot of stuff on Bali including their cremation ceremonies
- Ordered the Tranny Smackdown at Humphrey Slocombe
- Attended the Neil Gaiman "American Gods" reading with Patton Oswalt
- Watch a zydeco/jug band followed by a pirate rock band at a bar in Santa Monica
- Went to Anime Expo (not for the first time, but saw a lot of cool things I hadn't seen before) - tried couple of the trucks in their massive food truck lot (Slice Truck and India Jones truck)
- Attend the very first AMē, a new and FREE anime convention happening the same weekend as AX
- Watched all of the fireworks we could see from the Griffith Observatory on the 4th of July
- Read a bunch of graphic novels (the last two Fables books, the 9th Transmetropolitan, the first three of the Unwritten series, etc)
- Saw the H.P. Lovecraft-inspired "Re-Animator: The Musical!" performed, starring my friend
- Attended an Obon festival in Little Tokyo
- Watched a Shakespeare play performed in the haunted Pico House in downtown L.A.
- Tried the Jimmy Fallon flavor of Ben & Jerry's (vanilla ice cream with fudge-covered potato chips and salted caramel ripples - surprisingly underwhelming)
- Got that stupid newsletter to the printers all by myself
- Watched a production of "The Merry Wives of Windsor" (never saw it before) - the troupe performing weren't very good and so we left early
- Tried mint choko, Swedish chocolate-covered mint-infused caramels
- Watched "The Merry Wives of Windsor" performed in Griffith Park by a much better Shakespeare troupe
- Attended tiki-themed car show, featuring a series of sideshow acts
- Drank lemongrass soda
- Saw "Bridesmaids" and "Thor."
- Watched "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" screened for free at the beach (seen it before, it's one of my absolute favorites, but never saw it at the beach)
- Bought a fuck-ton of obscure sodas
- Attended a meeting of this science fiction club - was there to see the creators of steampunk, whom I had previously interviewed and they remembered me
- Watch "Much Ado About Nothing" performed by a Shakespeare troupe I'd never seen perform it before and at a park in Lakewood I didn't even know existed
- Saw "Cowboys and Aliens."
- Tried Hungarian-style strudel (one beef and one spinach) - the spinach one was trying to hard to be Greek spanakopita
- Drank Virgil's root beer Special Edition Bavarian Nutmeg, huckleberry soda, Mate Colada, Sioux City cherries and mint soda, and Sprecher Raving Red
- Wrapped a person in a full body duct tape cast
- Tried chocolate-covered bacon, deep-fried Kool-Aid, and deep-fried butter at the county fair
- Saw "Captain America: The First Avenger."
- Got Jack Daniel's pulled beef and King's Hawaiian rolls (made for some really tasty f-ing sliders), and Rembrandt gouda
- Learned about Preston Tucker
- Watched a bunch of old movies: "The Villain," "Tucker: A Man and His Dream," "Kiss Me Kate" (starring Harvey Keel), etc.
- Finally saw "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End."
- Drank Barrel Brothers vanilla root beer, Mystic Seaport Birch Beer, Celon's Mythical Creme Soda, and Buckin' Root Beer
- Went to a screening of "Valley of Gwangi" screened at the La Brea Tarpits (had a picnic of cheeses and meats. Ahhhh... prosciutto).
- Tried a bunch of different sushi
- Finally got out to look at the full mural of happy pigs and such at the Farmer John pork slaughtering and packing plant
