And you still get together to meet with your family to play board games? Wow. I can't remember the last time I did anything like that with my parents. Tell me about your family.

Heh, my mom also volunteers at her church and she's off-and-on done stained glass projects as a hobby.

What about your wife?

I pretty much spent the morning reading about Josef Mengele. Nightmarish shit, man.

For some reason I also started compiling a short list of things I've done in my life. Historic things I've seen, visited, touched, and so on. I'm sure it's not much compared to true history buffs or people who are well-traveled, but I was quite pleased on past reflection.

Looking over a profile you'd written for yourself you listed as your theme songs "In The End" by Linkin Park, "In The Light" by DCTalk, and "Forever Today" by DJ Tiësto.

Why those songs?

After getting my first kiss when I was 13, with the guy trying to stick his hand up my shirt, despite having my period for over the next couple months, I came to my mom worried that I might be pregnant. Even called my grandmother to tell her that I was worried, and even asked an advice nurse at the hospital. It was pretty bad.

Coulda sworn I saw him and another elder walk into Pep Boys in Bellflower yesterday, but I didn't want to just scream, "Vulkar!!" at some random person and hope it's him. I mean, the guy's on the complete opposite end of the state.

That would be from this profile here.

Tell me about your college experiences. I think I remember you playing a zombie game with Nerf guns.

- Swam in the Dead Sea, then visited Masada
- Touched the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, went to the Garden of Gethsemane
- Been to the West Bank, visited the supposed birthplace of Christ
- Went to a bunch of churches in Israel, that are supposedly built on places where Christ performed miracles or preached, as well as the Sea of Galilee and the River Jordan
- Visited Ephesus
- Visited the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes and the Acropolis of Lindos
- Saw where various wonders of the world stood (Temple of Artemis in Turkey, Colossus of Rhodes, etc)
- Went to different ruins in Greece as well as places where various things from mythology supposedly happened, and sailed through some caves there
- Went to the Louvre in Paris, saw the Mona Lisa and other pieces
- Visited other places in France (Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, sailed the Seine, Jim Morrison's grave, etc)
- Visited various places in England (Windsor Castle, Canterbury, St. Paul's, etc)
- Visited the USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor
- Snuck a touch of a chunk of the USS Arizona on display in a museum in Phoenix
- Touched chunk of the Berlin Wall

- Saw a copy of the Magna Carta
- Visited Tombstone, Arizona, and went to the OK Corral, Bird Cage Theatre, and Boot Hill cemetery (graves of Billy Clanton and others)
- Visited Wyatt Earp's grave near San Francisco
- Visited the grave of Emperor Norton I, also near San Francisco
- Visited the graves of Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Page, Dean Martin, Don Knotts, Mel Torme, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemon, etc are buried (they're all in the same cemetery), and was at Ray Bradbury's future grave a few days before he died
- Visited Manzanar, was a Japanese internment camp
- Hiked to and visited various Native American ruins in Arizona (Honanki, Palatki, Montezuma's Castle, Montezuma's Well, Tuzigoot, Besh-Ba-Gowah, Pueblo Grande, etc)
- Watched the Space Shuttle Endeavour fly by my bedroom window a couple times
- On two separate occasions danced the "Time Warp" with the record-breaking number of people (once at the Hollywood Bowl, the other at the West Hollywood Halloween Carnavale)
- Interviewed all sorts of people: senators, comic book creators, authors (including the creators of steampunk), people who did unique and insane things. Interviewed and photographed members of the Westboro Baptist Church, got my picture in textbook

I'm sure my list doesn't impress anyone, but I felt proud.

There's no real way of gauging how much I've seen since I go to a lot of museums, ghost towns, landmarks, and other points of historic interest all over. I know there's a lot I'm forgetting.

It wouldn't come off so to anyone else but one of the most horrifyingly embarrassing memories I have is when I was 11 and broke my cousin's son's foam bat playing with it while they were in town for my grandfather's funeral.

I apologized to my cousin, Carrie, who said it wasn't a big deal. But later, after the funeral, my cousin's husband, Lance, confronted me about it in front of my uncle's step kids and pretty much made me feel like shit. I was mortified and started sobbing about it and my uncle came in thinking I was crying about my grandfather.

Anyway, I still don't talk to Lance. At least not comfortably. It was rather traumatizing.

I'd do it, if I were you!

The Turkish love entertaining visitors. When you go shopping there, they pull you into the shop and insist on serving you drinks like coffee, apple tea, or raki (a much stronger alcohol than the Greeks' ouzo). They call this their "Turkish hospitality." Sales people can be REALLY pushy, and it's hard to get away when you're sitting in a plush chair with your feet up, drink in hand, while they try to get you to buy a handwoven carpet that's the size of a coffee table for $5,000.

Currently the American dollar is almost twice as strong as the Turkish lira, and supposedly they offer specials for bringing foreign currency into the country.

Since they're a part of NATO they largely don't hate Americans.

Seriously, though, of all the countries I've been to, Turkey's the only one that rolled out entertainers everywhere we went. They had traditional dancers during lunch, and this weird performance at Ephesus for the tourists. It was Cleopatra and Caesar watching some gladiatorial match while they played music from "Ben-Hur" and the theme for the Olympics.

Rick Steves goes on about how he made a tradition 8 years in a row to end every trip to Europe in his twenties (fucking bragger ) in Turkey as his grand finale.

I haven't been to Istanbul, but I'd love to go.

EDIT: Forgot to mention it, but it's worth pointing out. Turkey's a mostly Muslim country. Seemed like everywhere we went you'd hear the call to prayers from a nearby mosque. It was kind of eerie sometimes because some mosques' call to prayers sound like an air raid siren and you'll hear different mosques at the same time.

You'd hear this voice, encouraging you to come pray with them:

Most people in Turkey aren't strict practitioners of Islam. Women don't get called out in the street for not having their heads covered or what have you. It's sort of like here where some people only go to church for Easter and Christmas.

Anyone else weirded out when people pronounce "Gangnam Style" like how an American would read it? Like "Gang-nam," not "Gong-num."
