| Aiden felt something strange lingering in the overcast sky, something foreboding. He told himself not to think too much into it as he exited the apartment building. Just another day in a cold, dark world where everyone and everything is scarred. Nothing to get worked up about.
His apartment building was falling apart, but it was one of the few private living institutions up, and he was never going to stay at the station or at one of the public shelters. He threw on his flak jacket and strapped it tight as he moved down the eerily vacant street, not surprised by the silence at all. Since Shadowfall, things have been quiet. His assignment today was to help build and guard the Wall. The Wall was being erected around the city in sections, and today Section 6 was nearing completion. The ground around the city had been purposely scorched to allow ease of scouting, but a wall like this could do nothing but help. He passed through Times Square, still the most active place in New York City. The neon lights were no longer lit, and old papers were blowing free with the wind, but people still walked around, doing their own thing. Aiden carried a bit of respect around, as he was a member of the Security force, but no one had it in them to be mean to each other anymore. When your world is reduced to the people surrounding you, you learn to be close. Suddenly, the air was filled with the wail of the Emergency Alarm. Red lights flashed on the city streets as the voice of a gruff solider echoed "Everyone, take shelter! Section 6 is under attack!" Aiden blinked, for a moment too shocked to move, but his gut told him to kick up dust. He had to get to Section 6 and fast. He arrived there in 5 minutes of hard running. Bodies of darkened beasts and human corpses lie mingled together in the path of the hole of the wall. Fellow Security units were pulling up, and a bus, toppled over nearby, had several innocents climbing out. He saw the familiar face of JC Glick barking out orders to soldiers. Alyssa, one of the new members of Security, was climbing out of one of the Security cars, now parked to make a blockade in the hole. He walked over to one of the cars and pulled out one of his pistols. "Glick! What's the status?!" At that same moment, two strange men were getting everyone out of the toppled bus. One of the men was quite elderly, with a white beard to his navel, glasses, and a white religious cloak, not that uncommon anymore. His frizzy gray hair was put back in a ponytail, and his mustache seemed to obscure his mouth. The other man, a gruff, noticeably muscled European with powerful brown eyes and scruffy black hair, wore a orange and yellow Hawaiian shirt and bleached jeans. They seemed to take charge of the situation, despite not being recognized by anyone on the bus. They told everyone to take shelter in the abandoned M&T bank building on the corner, and they all clamored in. The two followed soon after, whispering to themselves. Suddenly, even from inside, the terrible roars of the distant demons could be heard loud and clear. (If you're in Security, you're outside. If not, you're in the bank building!) |
