I think racial slurs or derogatory remarks are usually reason enough to be fired regardless of your race. I don't see the double standard.....Isaisah Washington (who's black) just got fired from Grey's Anatomy for calling fellow co-star T.R Knight, gay derogatory terms.
I don't see the double standard....Prejudice is Prejudice. It's very hard for many Caucasians to understand what it's like to face prejudice. It's very easy to say 'Get over it' when you can't even come close to empathizing. Is there really any racist word that can offend white people? Honky? Cracker? Do many of Caucasians even know those words are derogatory? Answer: No. And even so...they still don't carry the same 'oompf.' |

My opinion is that Racism is the modern day witch hunt. I honestly think that people all take themselves way too seriously.
I could care less if someone hates me. If they act against me in a violent manner, I shall fight back. But honestly, we're supposedly taught as a child not to let words hurt us, but people lose their reputations and jobs and everything just because of a damn slip. Has anyone read "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"? It's not nice to white people at all. Eh, I'm just tired of double standards from both sides of the fence. |

I think, Shuyin, that if everyone kept standing up and saaying how terrible the white man devil is, then they're being racist, and insulting back. As a result, we, the white man devils, are going to think less of those that are black, and so the blakcs insult more, etc.
It's an endless process, and at some point then someone needs to stop the insulting and be the better man. We who are white have really made progress, and racism isn't that common anymore from our side. I personally am friends with several people who are black, as are almost everyone I know. |

In my opinion, the only thing worse then racist people, is the minorities that bitch and flip out at racist people. 1. Racists are dumb. 2. Getting bent out of shape because dumb people insult your ethnic background is more dumb. 3. Keeping racism alive because it gets under #2's skin is by far the most dumb thing I have ever seen. If a bully is insulting you, the worst thing to do is to show him it hurts your feelings, he will end up doing it more. |

This seems a bit like the topic before about women's rights going from far below a male's to much higher over them.
It used to be that white people would kick the shit into black people (And that's probably not just a figure of speech). Now, black people have gained rights, yet they gain enough right that allows them to pretty much have their revenge on the whites, even though the white people of today a firstly not the same people that kidnapped people in India and transported them in big ships to the US where they would live a life of slavery... So now, because of those times spanning from 60 or so years ago to about 300 years ago, whites have less ability of free speech about their feelings of black people, while a group of black men could probably shout across the street at a single white man calling him by a number of racist remarks and no one would think less of them... Society is screwed up.

I don't really know where to begin right now. Logo's analogy of a classroom is an excellent way to word things.
Many people don't understand white privilege or being the minority. Whether you accept that being a rich Christian white male puts you at the top of society or not doesn't matter. It's true.Many times people lash out at a particular race out of fear/ignorance/ or hate. Many people will consider themselves to be non-racist, but when threatened by a particular group, they'll use derogatory remarks. Nigga/Nigger has many connotations. I, for one, don't advocate the use of the word. However, calling your friends 'your niggas' and calling someone a 'nigger/nigga' are two different things. Why? Because they're meant in different ways. When two black males refer to each other in that way, it's a way of showing affection. Given it may not be the proper terminology, but that is how it is meant. Imus's comment was not appropriate. Especially when said live for the world to hear. Regardless of his ethnicity, it still was uncalled for. Right now the hip-hop community is trying fix itself. Rappers are turning to other rappers and saying, "Look. We have to change the content of our music." |

Good point... though I think that if he had to be fired over what he said, it should have been because what he said was blatantly sexist, not racist. |

I would like to point out that his comments were not infact racist, but merely insults. he called them prostitutes with bad hair! The only reason anyones saying it was racist was because he used black vernacular to call them such!....and furthermore, free speech dosent enter into it, he is paid to talk about sports by a private institution, then he talked in a manner his employers disliked so they fired him.
