NASA took this picture during the fires. Pretty nice.

Starting to sound like Southern Oregon from a few summers ago. Like Rogue said, it's nothing out of the ordinary. Every summer there is a fire started whether from arson or natural causes.

Im sitting in a valley, so the smoke and haze cant go anywhere I guess that's the worst we get.. besides the thousands of acres that burned.. but at least it was mostly BLM land and not private property.

At this point, for the safety of residents whose homes are under threat, many houses have been evacuated in the past couple days (according to several news outlets, at least 500,000). Problem is when you get things like this in incident reports: http://old.rimoftheworld.net/incidents/3623&p=19

If the link changes, seeing as it's constantly listing what's going on in that area, posted 10/22:

15 to 20 hispanic males in the back of a truck appears to be getting ready to loot; SO en route

Thankfully of the people I know of who've been evacuated, their homes were spared from the fires and saved by the firefighters.

The state and federal government are bringing in firefighters from around the country to fight the 16 wildfires going on right now. Supposedly they started around the Mexican border and leaped all the way up here.

The death toll as of today: 6.

While the fires are still not contained, aside from property damage there hasn't been anything too severe.

EDIT: I should also add that while I was in L.A. yesterday, the sun shone red in the sky through all the haze. Pretty surreal.

EDIT 2 (10/26 5:17 p.m.): I just got out of class and checked the news online to discover they've arrested one arson suspect and another one was shot dead.

Also, this isn't my town or my neighborhood, but on occasion, for the past couple days this is what the sky looks like over my house: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-fires-users22oct22-pg,0,4637161.photogallery?coll=la-home-center&index=29

Here's a current map of the fires and their locations: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-102407-me-fire-g,0,1346215.graphic?coll=la-home-center (Most of us who post on the board are in the Long Beach area and are spread out between there are Los Angeles--they're well within 30 miles of each other. As you can see those areas are relatively safe from the fires as they tend to be). The map also shows that a few of the fires have been contained and things are getting better.

I'm glad I don't live in California. But I'm worried about the other people who's in Southern California.

I'm hearing reports that "millions have been forced to flee," which sounds rather vague and with nothing really backing it up.

If I sound like I'm completely downplaying what's going on, my apologies to those who might have been affected. But seriously it's nothing horribly out of the ordinary here.

It made for a scenic view. It literally was a burning horizon during sunset. It was beautiful. And these 44 mph winds makes tennis pretty fun.

I was just in the area this weekend, I must have missed the thick haze. Though I was inside the hotel most of the time due to jet jag.

This sounds horrible! I am glad to hear everyone hear on xeogaming in fine at least, but it must make you a little uneasy to be in such fire easy place..

So sayeth Bad Religion, but seriously--They really are.

For the past few days the Santa Ana winds have been blowing fiercely through Southern California (the surf was AMAZING this weekend) and we've been having some massive brush fires.

As far as I know everyone in the area who posts on the board is fine and not in the danger zone; however, it's been occasionally raining ash that drifts from the fires and the skies in our area are filled with a thick haze (and no it isn't just the usual smog layer).

Whatever you might be hearing about the fire may also be exaggerated by the media. Several homes in the hills have been evacuated and many have been displaced. What you have to take into consideration is that brush fires are a very natural thing here in So Cal and though it might seem like the wilderness and such are forever destroyed, it's really just the chaparral (small plants that dry up during certain seasons. They're indigenous to California and MEANT TO BURN, hence why it burns and spreads so quickly).

California brush fires are a typical thing that's dealt with along with the occasional earthquakes. The problem is many people don't take the chaparral into consideration when they build homes (i.e. clearing it, or hiring a team of goats to graze it all down from time to time). Thus many homes, particularly very expensive ones, go up really quickly when a brush fire occurs.

If you don't believe that these things are meant to happen, check the area about a month after a major fire. The hillside's completely covered with flowers and other sorts of plants that only bloom after a burn. Their seeds are constantly "hibernating," if you will, in the soil and fires awaken them.

While these fires are spreading pretty wildly and three of the major ones in the area are linking together into one giant burn, this isn't near the crisis that it might be. The Drudge Report has been billing it as "Hell Comes to Malibu."

Malibu has been on fire many times before. It'll be fine.

From what I hear, though, San Diego has been suffering a few losses. Part of the San Diego Zoo was affected in that they lost a condor breeding facility.

More details as they arrive. In short, we're OK over here.
