Wooooow, I wonder what the Spanish version was called, haha. Probably just Castle in the Sky I guess. But still they constantly refer to that place as Laputa in the movie don't they? Haha, probably had to do some name changes there...

"Laputa" means "The Vagina" in Spanish...soooo....

XD

And Princess Mononoke! I've seen that too. Thought I listed it. Only in English though.

If you like Princess Mononoke you're going to love Nausica. It's incredible stuff. Maybe even more? Hah, I dunno why Rogue but it just seems like Nausica would be right up your alley.

@Kat: Why'd they take out "Laputa" in the title there?

Castle in the Sky had Mark Hammill I believe, that's always epic.

I haven't seen all of them (and damn I should really pick up Nausicaa. I keep seeing it at the library and passing it up), but my absolute favorite for inexplicable reasons is Princess Mononoke. I mean, I look back on it and I could see others being more poignant or artistic, but for some reason I've just always dug it.

MAJOR bump...but I didn't see the sense in making a new one about this...

I wish I could say that I grew up on these movies...but unfortunately I haven't. However, I can say this: as an adult, these are some of the most inspirational pieces of work I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. The music, stories, animation...I could go on. But they bring out all sorts of emotions I had as a kid, and I makes me look back on my thoughts and feelings as a kid quite fondly, rather than the typical "what was I thinking?" kinda dealie.

I have recently gotten my hands on all of soundtracks for each film, except Ponyo. Not even sure if there really is one. Haven't bothered. Ponyo, despite a lot of the criticism it's received, I adore. But it's the only one that didn't have music that grabbed me...still VERY enjoyable. I'd say something else about it, but I forget the spoiler tags...

These movies have a GINORMOUS impact on my life. Have. No past tense only there. They make me remember what it is I am truly passionate about, and I stop doubting myself and get my ass back in gear (Film/art, etc...not the easiest industry to break into, after all.)

Besides, they're working on another one. Based on "The Borrowers." Not too sure if it'll be one of my favorites, but I'll always give these films a fair chance.

But so far I have seen both Japanese and English versions of:
Totoro
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle(read the books first actually...well, 3 of them. There may be a 4th one?)

And only the english versions of:
Kiki's Delivery Service
Laputa's Castle in the Sky(10 points for Griffindor if you know why they took out the word "Laputa" in the main title after it's release...)

And I NEED to see Whisper of the Heart...I love the music too much not to...

Extremely hard question! I practically grew up watching the originals, seeing Princess Mononoke when I was seven and Totoro right around that time too, and have continued to love almost all of them to this day. I've seen: Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, The Cat Returns, Whisper of the Heart..

There all quite excellent. If I had to choose? Probably either Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, or Princess Mononoke. But really, I've enjoyed all of them.

Ah, Studio Ghibli, movies I can enjoy dubbed! I actually like their dubs a lot.

Anyways, Castle in the Sky is one of my favorites too. That one is just really unique. Other than that I've always been a big fan of Princess Mononoke and Nausica.

I saw Howls Moving Castle in theaters a few years ago which was cool, not one of their best but still really good (I've heard the novels are quite different or something supposedly).

Okay, Studio Ghibli. Everyone knows and (most everyone) loves this particularly influential and popular animation studio. Most everyone has seen at least one of their films, even people who don't really watch anime. Quite a large percentage of their projects have been translated and licensed for release in North America, (a few of them courtesy of Disney) and some have even enjoyed a successful theatrical run over here. Most anime fans, in my experience, can agree that the storytelling elements and charm of said studio's projects sometimes borders on brilliant. Not to mention the almost always flawless quality of the art and animation itself.
However, one thing that they never can seem to agree upon is which one is the best.
The answer tends to vary greatly from person-to-person. Since I don't really know people here and since I figured that this would be a good topic of conversation I decided to bring it up and ask each of you: What are your favourite Studio Ghibli films and why? I'm not really expecting a full review or anything, so don't feel pressured to give an in-depth reason for it. Hell, you don't even have to include a reason if you don't want to. I'm just curious about what you guys here might think. I suppose I'll share my thoughts as well, to start things off. So yeah, my list.

1. Whisper of the Heart (耳をすませば/Mimi o sumaseba)

Now I'm a bit of a sucker for slice-of-life and coming of age stories. Furthermore, I found that this one really caught me. The first time I watched it, I was blown away by the simplistic beauty of the story and the honest, likable characters making their way through it. I often tend to prefer realistic settings to fantastic ones, I feel as though a story set in the real world has a much greater effect on me emotionally and just tends to hit home stronger.

2. Ocean Waves (海が聞こえる/Umi ga Kikoeru)

This, like my favourite, has a strong slice-of-life feel. Perhaps more so than Whisper of the Heart, because of the utter lack of any fantasy sequences. It's a rather slow-paced romance about two high school students. I actually didn't like this one at first because I sort found the characters to be almost frustrating at times, but the more I watched it, the more I came to understand and appreciate them. After a couple of viewings it just clicked, and I found that this one's had a lasting effect on me ever since.

3. Laputa: Castle in the Sky (I don't know the original title)

So of all the Studio Ghibli films, I've probably seen this one the least. With that said, it is an absolutely amazing piece of fantasy adventure. Admittedly, I'm not usually a huge fan of fantasy, and while I feel that (almost) all Ghibli films have this unique sense of whisical charm about them, I think that it works best when strongly rooted in a realistic setting. That however, is not the case here. Everything, from the outlandishly fantasic setting to the brilliant story works perfectly here. Visually, this has got to be one of the most beautifully stunning anime films I've seen. I personally feel that this is Miyazaki's work. It's been a while since I've watched this one, but the fact that I've only seen it a couple of times yet it still came to mind immediately when I was thinking about this, says something.
