In putting North Korea on a chart by itself, it comes up like this:

It's just that SO MANY people have Google'd for news and information about Michael Jackson that in comparison it looks almost like no one's paying attention.

In regards to the threats from the country in question: well, the guy does have intercontinental missile technology and is using it to make some. While it does seem silly that he would threaten the U.S. of all countries (especially when there's a rather large pond between the two nations), it's kind of surprising that such a threat didn't get as much attention from the public.

While talking to a few friends this weekend who were hoping they'd score tickets to Jackson's memorial today, I asked if they heard if North Korea shot off any missiles toward Hawaii. They had absolutely no idea what I was talking about.

Anyway, this has been going around:

So Farah Fawcett was laid to rest a week ago. Someone put together this memorial video for her:

That's what we thought about the plans to destroy the twin towers, and exactly why we ignored the threat.

It would be interesting if Michael Jackson was responsible for a terrorist attack too, xD.

Their claims are too laughable to give a damn about. That's obviously why!

So in checking Google Trends, this is how much the terms Michael Jackson, North Korea, and Farrah Fawcett have come up in searches:

Michael Jackson is represented by the red. North Korea by the blue. And Farrah Fawcett by the orange.

In comparing Michael to the phrase "Kim Jong Il," North Korea's leader didn't even register on the chart.

North Korea's been claiming they're about to declare nuclear war against the United States and M.J.'s death has struck people as a larger concern.

And oddly enough the United States comes up EIGHTH on the list of countries running Google searches for Michael, behind Venezuela, Mexico, Chile, the U.K., Peru, Colombia, and Brazil.

Any death is sad, but I will say that I disliked him when he was alive, and him dying doesn't change a thing.

Billy Mays and Farrah Fawcett, on the other hand, are both very sad deaths.

I continue to hold to the opinion that it's both.

That will be my last remark on this topic.

As I said in those few words, it's not the media who are being "hypocrites" as you're calling them. That would be the public.

The media is mirroring what the public wants and in so doing is covering the public's thoughts and what it's partaking in in this situation.

I can tell you for a fact that the reporters and crew who have been sent out for this assignment are sick and tired of it too. I was at Staples Center this weekend. Many of them have been camping in their news vans for several days and I've heard them complaining to one another that they'll be happy when the attention this whole affair is getting dies off.

They were pulling up Wednesday, most of them arriving and staying there from Thursday on. A lot of them were international and didn't have a local studio to return to and have been there for almost a week because their job is making them. And they've got to be there 'til at least tomorrow when the memorial service is.

It's the heads of stations, newspapers, blogs, and so on who are demanding this coverage because the public wants it. And yes, those people are often money driven. Most of the kudos in the press is scooping other media outlets and beating them to the punch with a news story no one else has yet.

So agreed on the money thing. Not so much on the hypocrisy thing.

Hypocrisy with an excuse is still hypocrisy, only now it's further tainted with greed and exploitation.

I read the post about it on laist.com... seriously, wtf?

I mean, I don't care about Michael Jackson dying. I really didn't care for him while he was alive but the shit they say about him there is a bit much. Adulterous? Explain? I don't remember stories about him cheating on a wife or girlfriend or whatever. Nationality-confused? No, I'm pretty sure he was always American, no doubt about that. If they had said ethnicity-confused I might have agreed... and I can see what they were trying for with gender-confused but overall it really is a bit harsh. I say next time any of them goes to a funeral others should hold protests and accuse them of "worshiping the dead".

Morons....

So the memorial service is being held at the Staples Center (in downtown Los Angeles) on Tuesday, and you could enter to win tickets to attend (as they were giving away 10,000 free tickets).

True to form, Westboro Baptist Church's "Love Crusaders" will be on hand to protest. "God Hates Fags" signs and all. I'm tempted to go down there just to finally see them in person. Heh, probably shouldn't since it's the last week of class.

Along with this news, several L.A. bloggers have been posting this video of Michael Moore taking on Fred Phelps (Westboro's leader) back when their "church" was only protesting the deaths of gay people and AIDS victims:

How about via PM?

Oh media circus, how silly you are. However, it is a bit of a break for the LA Times and other newspapers I assume, so I guess something good has come out of it.

A few words regarding the media...

They cover what the general public wants to see. If there's a demand for celebrity gossip, they'll incorporate in any way they can into their shows, broadcasts, publications, etc.

The media mirrors what the public wants.

Now obviously Xeogaming folks tend to fall in the outliers of the public bell curve, and don't mimic the rest of the population, but if Joe the Plumber wants to see a week-long sob fest over a celebrity, that's what the media will cover. Why? Ratings, sales, etc.

The L.A. Times, which has been drowning lately with how little people read papers any more, is bragging about its record-breaking page views and paper sales due to Jackson's death.

Secondly, it's in VERY poor taste to libel and/or mock the dead. It's considered a media no-no all around to put someone down after they've cashed in their chips.

Look at Anna Nicole Smith. In life, EVERYONE was knocking her as a fat, no talent, gold-digging tramp. As soon as she dies, the world is in mourning for this Venus who'd had such a hard life filled with tragedy and so on and so forth. And this included stand-up comedians whom you'd normally see ridiculing a celebrity like her, Margaret Cho for example.

So all this hemming and hawing over why the media's doing what it's doing... it's the same thing every week. There's always going to be a media circus and all you can do is either change the channel or just stop talking about it. Like I said, the media takes its cues from the public's opinion.

Anyway, odd fact. I was two degrees of separation from Michael Jackson. His former tour doctor was my grandfather's before he died in the early '90s. Eventually Dr. Finkelstein became my parents' and my doctor for a time before we changed insurance.

Now with all that said... it's a damn shame that several people of note have been dying off lately. Life is precious, no matter how famous the person may have been.

It's rather unfortunate that people feel the need to go to the extremes of either 1) blowing it all out of proportion, 2) ignoring those who passed entirely without a kind word, or 3) being dicks about the whole situation in general.

... saints, I feel old.

Anyway... my boyfriend's uncle called us up in the middle of night to crack his own Jackson joke. I will not be conveying it here out of respect.

In life, the media made a big deal about all his fuckups. Now they're acting like it's such a big loss and completely ignoring the fuckups.

Now, I'm not going to touch the topic of his misdeeds. I simply hate the hypocrisy in the news coverage and, y'know what? Yeah, I expect that shit from them all the time, but this is just a perfect illustration.

A bit much... but in some ways I agree.

What I keep finding funny is people talking about how great he was and how good his music was but the most recent thing that I hear them playing is "Bad". Maybe once I heard Black or White... so yeah, I don't think there was a single song past 1992.

But yeah, Oni and WhiteRose called me with a few jokes the day it happened.

"What is the deterioration rate of plastic?"
"I dunno, what is it?"
"Ask Michael Jackson in 100 years"

rofl

But yeah. It doesn't help when news casters are saying how he "touched the world" and your mind adds to that "one little boy at a time"

Fuck Michael Jackson.. Fuck him. There. I fucking said it. Fuck that pedophile piece of garbage.

Seriously; MJ was the shit before his decline into perversities. He died when he started doing that shit, and I mourned him then. World keeps on turning. Johnny Cash and George Carlin were two gigantic entertainment losses. Michael Jackson (at least in this moment in time) is not. He was a creep. His old music, though was kick-fuckin'-ass. End of story.

You guys, so silly. Michael was a completely different tier than Farrah. She was 70's Fap Material tier, MJ was Lord Tier. He was one of the Ultimate 55. He did that child molestation crap deliberately as an experiement to test his inner funk. It stayed intact. He made himself look like a weird alien, otherwise the minds of American youth would've exploded from the overpowering groove.

A country in South America exploded when he died. Ever hear of Costitores? Yeah well you never will now.
