Oh man, so many typos in what I said. So many thoughts that started one way and were completed another without rereading it. Ugh...

I'd heard from everyone I know who's voiced that they've seen it that it was really, really cute.

I don't really have a problem with celebs doing the English dubs, it's just there are so many excellent and legendary voice actors who don't get so much recognition these days and they're losing jobs because screen actors want to make the jump to voice acting as well.

But at the same time getting celebrities opens people who normally wouldn't see an anime film into the theaters because they figure, "Well, Brad Pitt's voicing a 1000-year-old carp that grants wishes, how bad can it be?" or something of the like.

Well on one hand, if we're talking anime-wise ... it's pretty easy to say Miyazaki's movies get dubbed dramatically better than most anime out there. A definite plus I'd say, but yeah.

Anyways, haven't seen it yet myself though my friend saw it yesterday and said it was pretty good. He noted that the characters were kind of "just there" or something though, and didn't get fleshed out enough. I dunno though.

Anyways speaking of Miyazaki, I don't know if you guys have ever heard of this one, but he apparently directed a full series in the 70's: Future Boy Conan. The premise sounds pretty awesome. I've got it all downloaded (can find it at bakabt), and I'm pretty stoked about it.

A series directed by him... that's just gotta be epic.

Edit: Just noticed it looks like Tomino had a big hand in the series too (father of Gundam, among other things).

Oh I know. Mononoke herself was voiced by Claire Danes and the wolf mother by Gillian Anderson and Eboshi by Minnie Driver.

Heh, all there was that Korean still-frame anime "Doggie Poo." Not Miyazaki's but still poignant.

It was pretty good. Not his best, but the style was astounding as usual. I got the feeling the story was tainted in the translation process as some plot points were seriously suger-coated over, but hey.

Also, all of Miyazaki's movies get celeb dubs. Mononoke had Billy Bob Thorton and Jada Pinkett Smith. Spirited Away had John Ratzenberger for god's sake.

Anyway, Miyazaki is one of my heroes. If he literally animated shit, I'd pay ten dollars to see it.

So the latest from Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli has finally surfaced in U.S. theaters.

You know, after they had to go seeking celebrities for the dub voices.
