Meh. Victor wasn't that great, in my opinion.

My favorite character in that book had to be the Joker, in all honesty. He was the best written, in my opinion. How he used to be such a big deal to Batman, and he has to team up with another villain to get the attention he wants.

Onomatopoeia was a good character, but not great.

Well, Smith said that he could do better in his next Batman book, and this was just a warm up. So I need to go read the next one. Cacophony does beat Year One, though. There was just something about it.

For me, it wasn't so much the villain being great (as there are several in it) as it is how Batman interacts with them. He absolutely hates one here, he'll cooperate with another there, he'll... well, I'll leave that there.

I'll just say that I wasn't REALLY impressed with the final fight so much as the way the story flowed and how the characters had multiple levels of interacting. There was depth as opposed to the usual:

Villain: "I'm a villain and I'm doing bad things just because."
Batman: "Not on my watch!!" BANG! ZOOM! POW! SPLOOSH!!
Villain: "Foiled again! I'll get you one day Batman!!"

All right, after finishing Cacophony, I think I'd say that's my current favorite in terms of Batman graphic novels. To avoid spoilers, the talk near the end between Joker and Bruce is what sells it for me.

One of my least favorites has been "Batman: Child of Dreams." It felt like such a Mary Sue story.

lol Dick Grayson is still alive if i'm not mistaken. Jason Todd was beat to a pulp. But this one act single handedly changed everything the Bat stood for.

Yes, the one by Frank Miller. It was quite good, and I suggest a re-read.

Otherwise, I agree with you. What happened to Barb was horrible, and she lived through it for the rest of her life. What happened to Dick was bad, but I don't think it was as bad as what happened to Bard. Dick's death may have been the worst thing the Joker did, but not the worst thing affecting someone else, if you follow?

Honestly, I was rooting for Gordon to go bad while reading. I thought it would have made a great twist.

Batman didn't fight any "crazy" villains. Gordon beat the shit out of Flask and threw his gun in the woods. It was really good!

Yeah, I read that one a few years back. I love the fact that he was effectively killed off by the readers. But the little bastard's back from the dead, especially with character resurrection being so typical in comics.

I figure Barb's beating was still pretty high up there since she was this beloved character (a kick ass superheroine at that), and she's never gotten out of that chair because she was ruthlessly beaten. Following said pummeling, stripped, photographed, and then the pictures were flashed at her father as torture as further insult to injury.

As for Year One (are we talking the one by Frank Miller?), I seriously don't remember much of it other than Gordon having an affair.

The theme they used in the movie was "super sanity" he realizes that urban life changes from day to day so he is reborn everyday with a new background. and every villain, has had one bad day two face, the riddler, countless others but his was twisted and it's the best origin of the joker. most of the others had his name as Joe Kerr ugh lol

I know, I know. But still. *Shrugs* I think his backstory should have been left more vague. Authors have tried to capture how the Joker became the Joker, but I don't think that any of their stories show the true character. I liked the theme 'one bad day' in the killing Joke, but I think that it could have been used for a different villain--not him.

The Joker is one of those character that I can't see having a set background. I liked how they changed it every time his past was mentioned in The Dark Knight (movie, not comic). It showed just how indecisive his character was, and made him seem all the more crazier. When you define the mysterious, it becomes less mysterious and more understandable. That's what I like about the Joker--you can't understand him.

He is a raving lunatic, but a brilliant one at the same time. He is a mastermind. He needs no defining, in my opinion.

I can honestly say that I do not know much about Onomatopoeia.

As for Year One compared to The Killing Joke, I think it is better because Batman himself was better written. In Year one, he had story and you really got to know him. It went beyond the chases and the late nights. It focused more on the man behind the mask. In the Killing Joke, he was just an angry guy trying to find the Joker. While I understand that not every comic can focus solely on Batman/Bruce (and yes, only Bruce), I like the character, not just the crime fighter. I know the villains need development, too, but still. Liked it, loved it, made love to it.

Okay he beats up Barb in the very beginning you definately need to read the rest, as for the worst thing to ever happen to a character would be Jason Todd being beaten with a pipe and left to die in an explosion. See "Batman: Death in the Family" Phoenix, I too like year one but i feel as though it doesn't quite reach The Killing Joke's standards but i do like the are a tiny bit more. Cacophony was amazing and Onomonapeia is a great villain he's perfectly written.

So I'm about 2/3-3/4 through Kevin Smith's "Batman: Cacophony." Joker's pretty sexually depraved in it, but it's typical of Smith to write that sort of thing in.

Onomatopoeia is the main villain, with Smith reprising the character since he created him for the Green Arrow comics (yay, Ollie!!!).

It's not bad, pretty good actually.

Honestly, I really liked Year one. I loved the artwork, but more so, I loved the story they gave. It really set things up for Batman, in my opinion.

But, yes. The Killing Joke is a close second. I loved the subtle comparison of Batman and the Joker in that book. They both couldn't live without one another, but they were just as crazy as the other. Alan Moore did a great job exploiting this about Batman and his number one nemesis.

(Apparently if we use apostrophes you get SQL warnings, so sorry if there are a bunch of errors).

I still have not had the chance to read that one cover to cover. I went through the part when Joker beats Barbara Gordon and then takes pictures, but I still have not actually gotten the story. Probably the worst thing that could have happened to a character in the DC Universe, but then again, she emerged as a much stronger character as Oracle.

I actually am not sure which comic I would pick for a favorite. Hush was all right, probably best for Jim Lees art.
