My dad is in charge of proposing and implementing new network programs at Blue Cross Blue Shield at North Carolina, so he's definitely very computer-literate. He has a seven foot tall bookshelf and several stacks of just computer/programming books.

My mother is about average when it comes to computer literacy.

So at first glance, they seem pretty well adjusted to the computer age, right?

Well, then we give my dad a TV controller...He has no idea how to fast forward, turn on Cable or the DVD player, turn on a console, etc etc.

And if you want him to plug something into the back...well, there will be at least half an hour of high profanity language before he figures it out.

My mother doesn't even bother messing with that.

Then there was the woman who couldn't figure out what a tab is and was distraught that the Google did the whole PacMan homepage:

Well a few days ago our power went out for awhile randomly during the day. Once it all came back on I was in the kitchen getting some food, my mom came in and asked "Do you know how to get the computer on again?"

I pushed the power button.

/true story

My dad knows some hardware, has some music programs, has done some coding in the past, and likes web design/photoshop stuff, so he's not nearly as bad at all. Phew!

I know enough to get by and a bit more besides that, but I am not a tech genius. My dad took a bunch of classes on computers, got a bunch of certifications and all that so he thinks he is a big whiz but friends that self taught themselves know more. Hardware-wise he is okay but that is it. My brother Rick is pretty good, and he taught himself. He can't code or anything but he can fix most problems and figure out how most of it works. Mom... well... she has email and yahoo messanger down for the most part, and she is learning the workings of facebook but she has a long way to go.

Let's see, my parents don't know ANYTHING about computers and they think if I spend more than an hour on mine a day that it's unhealthy (as opposed to their 7+ hours zombifying in front of the television).

They don't realize how much I understand about Windows and computer hardware and they think my brother knows more. For one, my brother constantly has viruses/trojans on his computer and doesn't know how to get rid of them, but he's got enough money to buy a new laptop every time one of his takes a shit. It's funny, my parents thought I was a hacker when I guessed my brother's password, which wasn't hard at all. Seriously, don't make your password the nickname you gave yourself, it's just dumb.

My grandpa thinks he knows everything about computers but he doesn't even know the difference between a tower and a monitor! This normally wouldn't be bad but he lords his "knowledge" over me.

His daughter, my aunt Lisa, is actually pretty intelligent with computers but not with any from this decade. She grew up knowing dinosaur PCs thoroughly but never really expanded her Windows knowledge past clipart.

On my mom's side of the family, my grandparents know how to email and use Facebook but for some reason they're still using 28k dial-up, I'm not fucking kidding. They're paying like $40 a month for it too! I want to slap some sense into them and have them get the cable that I have, I'm only paying $30 for it a month for a 16Mb connection, they also offer an 8Mb for $15. For one, I didn't even know that they still had dial-up where I live, but I guess my grandfolks are good at tracking down bad deals!

Let's see, that pretty much leaves my brother, my aunt, my grandparents and myself actually knowing how to USE a computer, my aunt Lisa probably knowing the most about older computers and me knowing the most about newer computers by far. Everybody else just fakes it.

I guess I'm real lucky about my family and computers. I've been raised by computers thanks to my mother and father. lol

Bitmap knows about my family and how we all participated in networking our house. Why? Because we needed to learn how to network several rooms so that the wires are all hidden away and tucked into the attic and walls.

Anywho... We all specialize in areas on the interwebs.

My big bro loves to make new applications and what not.

My sis is working on an app for the ipod for creative writing.

My mother is the one who has taught me most of what I know. She taught me how to type when I was 3.

My step-father is very internet savvy.

I love web design and using several applications like Photoshop and ImageReady.

So as you can see, I don't have to rant. In fact. My mother retaught me how to uninstall and reinstall windows SEVERAL times when it came to Bitmaps compy. =P

My grands know how to use skype and e-mail everyone. The only thing they needed help with was putting a security code on their wifi.

So yeah. Nothing to rant about here.

"taught"

My entire family is that way, but that statement is generally true about everything now, so it doesn't apply to just computers. If we're talking about internet technologies and related, it should be that. "Technology" is such a broad term, and used so finite for this rant, that it doesn't even begin to cover what I had forgotten I was going to berate you about.

So, pineapples.

We all have family members who are just plain terrible with technology. No matter how hard you try to teach them it just does not go through to them. I am talking about basic stuff.

Fortunately, my dad is a wizard at those kinda things. He built his own computer from scratch and is learning new things every day. He does have some questions here and there, but that is legitimate stuff. Not: Hey what is the website for google?

Let's look at my mother. She has to go to google.com, type in the website URL in google, and then click on the URL on the google page just to go to the page she wants.

My uncle thinks he knows his shit about computers and was telling my mom "If Dale touches your laptop consider yourself fucked." Well, my mom ended up with limewire and got so much garbage on her computer that she wanted to get rid of it. Uncle could not uninstall it, and mom ended up calling me: "I trust you more than your uncle. Can you come over here and get rid of Limewire"?

Everyone knows how hard it is to uninstall that damn program. But for me, it did not take long.

Oh yeah, and my step-dad has to print every single webpage. I tought him how to bookmark websites. But he just really loves his printer.
