So if he's not going to get it professionally published, then in my mind, there is absolutely nothing at all wrong with writing it anyway. If it improves his writing ability, and helps him move forward with his ideas, then is there really anything wrong with not being completely original?

Not to go too off topic, but I think that writing only for other people, like Elara was indicating, and only to be seen can do nothing but cripple the writer. If you're going to write a story, write it for yourself, because your story speaks to you, and only after that can you even think about publishing it. If your story doesn't effect you, the writer, how can you expect the readers to get anything out of it?

But back on topic, I like the zombies idea, although I think it could be a stronger ending if George dies instead, only as he realizes that the values he tried to instill in Lenny will never stick, thanks to his own bad example. He dies realizing that he should have done more.

Yeah, its not the same story as Of Mice and Men, but who cares? xD.

The reason we are comparing is because it is all like stuff that just came out... usually not a good idea to redo an idea that was just done unless you can do it in a 100% different way, otherwise people say "oh that is just a ripoff of *insert title here*"

I also like the human envy story, sounds nifty. And as sick as I am of zombie stuff right now, I liked the Of Mice and Zombies idea

Seriously, people? Look, you can go back and forth naming similarities to movies or other stories, but then eventually you won't have anything to write. You can't limit yourself like that. The real thing that makes your story original is how you execute it. Plot, characters, feel... Those are the things that really make a story.

Vince, instead of trying to find the perfect premise, why don't you just sit down and write them all? Just try to make the characters unique, the settings vivid, and the plot unfold unexpectedly. Then you'll have a good story.

(Btw: Xeios, I dig the human envy story idea)

Urban/Xeios: That just sounds like a cross between The Matrix and Gamer. I'm not a fan of any of these, they're too generic. Also what is terraformers or whatever?

You mean like that movie, Dear John?\

VR Addiction: A game where people actually plug in to play it. (Think matrix-style plugs) And an underground ring of players who gamble on brutally bloodthirsty matches.

Human with robot envy: Man creates fantastical machines, but feels empty, as if the life he was giving to these AI's, he was draining from himself. He works on initiating a way to live inside of his AIs forever, by implanting his brain on them. Then, as an AI, he feels incredible envy for humanity, and wishes to be real again. Only to realize he's trapped forever in the cold metal shell.

And the Of Mice and Men thing. Instead of Sci Fi why don't you make it Of Mice and Men and Zombies?

Of Mice and Zombies? Hehe.

Zombies are out of the grave, and learning to function in real life, much to the living's dismay. Lenny cannot control his hunger, and often finds himself eating cuddly puppies and women. His friend, George, tries to teach him right from wrong in the human world, but to no avail. Lenny just wants to find his farm full of multi-colored bunnies to munch on, for each is a different flavor of cotton candy (he was never too bright, even for a zombie). The humans find the body of the woman Lenny accidentally ate and hunt the pair down, tired of zombies all together.

Being a good friend, George hunts down these men instead, turning them (your mind is reset when you are turned. Basic knowledge and motor skills still apply. Like amnesia). Building a small army, the pair leads their troops to the town, slaughter and dinner on the mind.

Much to George's dismay, Lenny is taken out during the fight by a shotgun. George holds his friend, telling him that the farm is just in sight and that everything will be okay. Lenny dies with a smile on his zombie face.

After Lenny's death, George vows to build his army even larger to gain revenge on human-kind. The story ends with him marching out to the next town, thinking about war and multi-colored bunnies.

Yeah, fucking awesome.

Sounds too much like some things that are on television right now... the mob doctor I mean.

Of Mice and Men in space? Interesting idea as long as you make it different enough. Or maybe take it in a different way where the characters are like the originals but the plot differs wildly... instead of the accidental killing have them stumble onto some alien civilization that the bosses were trying to keep hidden or something like that.

Indeed it is, what i had in mind for that was bored surgeon has a gambling problem, gets in deep with the sharks, forced to become a mob doctor and finds out he likes it more.

Elara- The terraformer idea was going to be a sci-f spin on Of Mice and Men.

Vulkar- A table top surgeon is someone who does illegal surgery like a mob doctor.

After George, a renowned heart surgeon, saves the life of James, a boy who tried commit suicide, he is pulled into this boy's heartbreaking life of abusive parents, sadistic peers, and a dark voice...commanding the boy's every move...

And James doesn't like listening to the voice, because when he does...people get hurt. Sometimes they even die.

In order to make this a good story, you'd obviously have to follow from only the surgeon's perspective, either in a close third person, or maybe even first person, as he slowly learns about the boy's horrible life, and what the voice is trying to get him to do. A dark revenge story focusing on the surgeon, just like you wanted, xD.

A lot of those sound similar to things that have already been done... the terraformers could work depending on how you plan it. What/where are they terraforming and what happens?

Okay so i have been having a myriad of ideas for short stories and I would like some help fleshing them out a bit....and True, i won't start any of the stories with that phrase. Below is a list of ideas if you could respond with your own ideas it would be greatly appriciated.

1. A dark tale of a tabletop surgeon.
2. The story of two terraformers*.
3. Chronicles of an underground bounty hunter (for the mob or other).
4. The story of virtual reality addiction.
5. A story about a human with robot envy.
6. A story based off of "Society Beta" it is nothing yet. But it sounds awesome!
