Welcome to the real world. Kinda sucks, don't it?

Well, let me dust off this thread.

I am moved in. Completely. My wallet seems to be better friends with this place than I am, but the friendship between my wallet and the house has left him an empty shell. Get it?

Hm. I thought I posted yesterday.

In any case, the move went fine over the weekend. I still have tons of boxes to go through, bit that was expected. I'll post more after class.

PM me these details, Katana. Winter is coming and I live in an all electric house.

Foodstamps really isn't something to be ashamed of. I get them 4-6 months out of the year. I'm the only one in my family with a job. My pop works about 6 months out of the year in a seasonal job. So that's when I report that and stop collecting, because he actually makes pretty damn good money those few months. And everyone else is old, disabled, or my sisters just don't fucking work, and no one seems to wanna make them. So make sure you look into things like that. At your age, being on your own, it shouldn't be too difficult to get them.

As far as utilities go, if anyone has heard of deregulation, I actually work for an electric company, and I can save anyone from PA (4 other states too) 20%. If you're interested Phoenix, or even you Elara, let me know, cuz I really don't want to go all advertiz-ey, but my bill is significantly cheaper. It's how we survived last winter.

Otherwise, get excited too! I hope the move is going smoothly, and do report back on how it went.

Sounds like a sweet deal.

Best of luck, man.

You're lucky it's just a grand for rent plus utilities (it's like way more here depending on how safe the area is). So what about internet access, food, and all those other luxuries?

I LOVED getting food stamps! I hate the fact that lazy people get them and blow ~$400 on nothing but junk food, it made me want to punch babies when I was a cashier at WinCo.

But yeah, been there and done that. If I could find employment around here, I'd be in the same boat, but alas, I'm back at square one.

Hope it works out for you dude. Like you said, just try not to get into the party mindset or get stuck, you know? So just keep your head up and focus on yourself.

I don't know what your income is but hopefully $500 isn't half of it or something, that would definitely be kind of tight I guess. When I worked full time in 2009 I knew a guy who had an apartment by himself and he was spending half his monthly income on rent alone, I have no idea how he got by. Probably had no money for anything but food.

I wouldn't say my relationship with my parents is bad, but they still definitely kind of treat me like a kid. I still get automatically dragged to family events, etc. As Elara said, I definitely hope they see me on their level as an adult someday when I move out. That probably would have been soon if it weren't for the surgery bill from last year!

As much as I hate saying it, there is always food stamps. Seems that everyone here has a fucking Access card and they get SO MUCH on it that I nearly applied myself before Ben was called back to work.

Hopefully that relationship stays strong for the sake of the utilities. Lol.

Hahaha. Yeah, little Phoenix is turning into a man.

I really hope my relationship with my parents improves once I'm gone. Because, as of right now, it is a very on-edge one.

$250 isn't bad at all. It would be $1,000 plus utilities, but it gets split four ways. Plus, someone has a girlfriend living with them, so she pays the utilities as her share. Cheaper than paying the rent.

I expect to pay a lot more once I get a car. I expect about $500 in insurance and a car payment, if I'm lucky. Plus rent, food and my heart medicine...it'll be a little tight. Especially with the hour cut at work.

I don't even want to talk about gas.

Aww, our little Phoenix is growing up! *sniffles*

Also on the plus side, relations with the parents improve a lot once you move out. They can't really control your life anymore, so they start to appreciate you a bit better. I actually like my parents now that I no longer live with them.

But yeah, money is obviously going to be a pain in the ass, though $250/month is damn nice for starting rent... I'm assuming that includes your share of utilities, right? Expect to pay more in winter, heating is a bitch. Our electric bill was about $160 a month last winter, as opposed to the $70ish that it is in summer. Of course, this is an all electric house, but even then. Also, what about food?

And once you get your license, yeah, the independence truly kicks in because you can just go wherever you want too. It's a nice feeling, though daunting at times... especially when you look at gas prices.

A couple of months ago, I decided it was time to move out. Honestly, I would have been comfortable with living at home, were my parents not...difficult. It was as if I weren't an adult, and they thought they still had free reign over my life. Besides the fact that they wanted to charge me about $200 a month to live at home.

So, having turned down a proposition from a friend before, I began contemplating. I can pay $200 a month, live at home and put up my parents' bullshit, or I can pay $250, live with a few friends and do whatever the hell I want. Not that I go out and party or anything, but it's nice to just do my own thing.

I've been packing up my room for the past two weeks or so, and I take off on October 1st. The move date cam quick, and I'm great at procrastinating, but I feel good about everything...mostly.

People, with good reason, have been telling me that it's gonna be hard. Money is obviously a big thing, but I still don't drive yet, either. I'm relying on my friends for a while until I get my license, but with school, work and this...I feel like I have a lot on my plate. I thought this would be a good experience, though. Even if I don't end up liking it, this is the real world and I need to learn how to deal with it.
