Dear Mrs. Conklin: Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 968, the "Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011," and H.R. 3261, the "Stop Online Piracy Act." It is good to hear from you. S. 968 was introduced on May 12, 2011, and referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. On May 26, S. 968 was reported out of committee and placed on the general legislative calendar. If enacted, S. 968 would amend federal copyright law to authorize the Attorney General to file civil action against violators of copyright infringement law. H.R. 3261 was introduced on October 26, 2011, and referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. On November 16, H.R. 3261 was considered before the full committee. If enacted, H.R. 3261 would authorize the Attorney General to seek a court order against a U.S.-directed foreign Internet site committing or facilitating online piracy. I am concerned about the substantial negative impacts that intellectual property theft and the sale of counterfeit goods have on our nation's economy. As Congress reviews potential reforms to our nation's intellectual property laws and enforcement mechanisms in response to technological advances, we must be certain that we do not make changes that encroach on fair and lawful enjoyment of creative works and legitimate websites. However, we must also be aware of the substantial negative impacts that intellectual property violations have on American businesses and our economy. It is the role of Congress to seek out an appropriate balance between the lawful use and enjoyment of the public while protecting the rights of the rights holder. Should these bills come before the full Senate for consideration, I will keep your thoughts in mind. Thank you Mr. Fluff and no talk. |

I wouldn't be surprised if people are pirating even more in protest, now that I think about it. |

I posted some things about this on my Facebook. Here they are:
"If SOPA and/or PROTECT-IP pass, the American government has failed to represent the citizens of the United States of America. If this happens, I sincerely hope the citizens of the internet fight back. I suggest people interested in seeing the internet after SOPA/PROTECT-IP check out the TOR network..." "NOTE: If SOPA/PROTECT-IP pass, sites like Facebook, YouTube, Flikr, MySpace, Twitter, Reddit, etc will not be able to operate. The overhead cost to run a social website is enormous under these bills because the site owner must be liable and police ALL CONTENT! SAVE SOCIAL MEDIA - STOP SOPA & PROTECT-IP!!!" American Censorship Infographic SOPA Opposition Petition (from Reddit) I also posted the video that you have linked. Dangerous stuff... PS: Check out my post over in the NDAA thread! |

Yeah this is just straight up stupidity. Really really really hope this does NOT pass. This issue is getting so old. |

So, the American government is trying to censor the internet. This isn't much of a debate, as none of us would like to see that happen. This is something we should all be trying to stop, as it shapes not only our futures, but the world's future, as America often sets a standard for the rest of the world.
Now, I know the video is a bit long.... but it is very informative! Watch, listen and learn, and hopefully something can be done to prevent SOPA from passing! |
