Well, Xeo has it pretty well, at least as far as I have come to understand it.
There is also Industrial, like Rammstein and newer Marilyn Manson. One that I know for sure is Dimmu Borgir is considered Symphonic Black Metal. |

True, Most of panteras songs that sound happy like "up lift" Really arent XD.
They dont change my mood or anything, they dont affect me. My definitions of metal generes arent set in stone, there just what i go by *shrugs* So...Darkslaya, what band are you trying to describe to someone? Maybe a few of us here will know them and try to describe em. |

I guess that is somewhat true, I just never really looked at them as having to deal with Satan or something.
To me, and as funny as it sounds, Power lyrics seem 'nice'. Nothing that drags me down or anything compared to, say punk rock and nu metal [I don't give a Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck <-- There's nu.] |

Well, I don't really define music by there lyrics personally, I look more at the style. Progessive Metal is upbeat and somewhat fast paced. Stratovarius is a good example. Power Metal, in my opinion, is faster, and usually has somethng Progressive Metal doesn't; double bass drumming. Then you can add Symphonic onto these and have kind of a "sub genre". Anyways, I kind of look at Power Metal as a descendent of Thrash. If you ask me, the styles are somewhat similar. Power is just more recent, and probably a little faster and more upbeat. I guess some people say bands like Gun's N' Roses are regular Metal, but I'm personally not sure about that. To me, they're more just like Heavy Rock or something else. I'd say Iron Maiden is regular Heavy Metal. Edit: For the record, I've come to like Rhapsody even more than Edguy now. |

Ive always categorized metal bands by their lyrics, and generally what their based on.
General/ Heavy metal is a little of every genere of metal Thrash(metallica mostly) have albums that the songs follow a certain guideline. Take Metallicas RIde the lightning album, every songs deals with death, Wether its a form of dying, stuff like that is thrash, were there not just one genere. Power metal. The lyrics mostly deal with something rising (usually satan ) or over powering, like fighting. Pantera is all Power metal, listen to thier albums and youll see what i mean. Listen to "Vulgar Display of Power" it will hit you instantly

Just dont bother with all those screaming, shit ass sub generes, every metal band out there will fall into the first three categories. |
