***Some Minor spoilers here***
So I went in there(The theater) with almost zero expectations, and a hardcore craving for popcorn... I came out disappointed and angry. I've always had it as a rule of thumb that a sequel will suck if you just watch the trailer, didn't like the looks of it, and have watched the previous films. I was getting tired of the second one even, but this bastardization of an easy to watch action film has gone way to far for several reasons. Firstly, the acting was terrible, forced lines all around... I couldn't stand how bad the timing was for some responses. The plot was ridiculously convenient: "Looks like we're screwed guys" "Just wait" *Blows a whistle* "Yetis!! =D!!!" That was one of the more "what the f***" moments when it came to plot, because before that moment, they weren't even mentioned, and they weren't even given a thought 20 minutes after they showed up. But guess who carried the stretcher that O'Connell was in? Yeah. The romantic chemistry was just as bad in that it made little or no sense, especially in the case of Alex and Zi. Another thing I realized I was really sick and tired of was Brendan Fraser's expression he does were he screws up his face really weird and goes like "OhhrerRowAAAAaa?!". What the hell is up with that and why does he have to do that every time the plot has a twist? I'm positive he doesn't have any fans who go there just so they can see him contort his face and yell, so why put it in his script thirty times? It reminds me way to much of Tim "The Toolman" Allen on tool time. That said, I did a little research, and their history is fairly sound, which they then tore to pieces by having the terracotta army discovered in 1947 instead of 1974, and a few other out of timeline mishaps(Apparently the Emperor was pure evil, and never planned on uniting china for the purpose of prosperity, but instead to become a slaver of millions). I guess it was okay at some points, with the larger battles, and a bit of comic-relief guy(Jonathan) humour to keep me from killing the guy two seats behind me who was snoring a little(This is true, and also the first time i've ever seen that happen). Now I'll be the first to say I'm not an experienced movie-goer, but this did not impress me the least. The were trying to pass the reigns to the younger new generation of mummy slayer so Brendan Fraser can go crawl under a rock, but they did a terrible job of it.

I saw the trailer and all I could say was "How the hell is that The Mummy?"
I'm not going to neglect it just yet, but it just looked ... very un-Mummy-ish, or something.

Posts: 4516/11918 You know it's bad when those guys ACTUALLY writing negative reviews.
| Seems like Harry Knowles and Co. tend to write mostly positive critiques to secure their free swag and exclusives from the production companies they shamelessly go to bed with day in and day out. FX |

Posts: 4371/11918 I didn't say because it's a sequel it's automatically going to suck, BUT to touch on a certain point, there is a pattern of bad sequels that come out.
| The Matrix, for example. Now, while I'm a big fan of the trilogy, I do agree that the sequels weren't exactly up to scratch with the original and in the long-run may not have needed to be made. Other examples I can think of off the top of my head: The Lost World and JP3. Jaws 2. Battle for Planet of the Apes. Speed 2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3. Free Willy 2 & 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Elektra, and all the Bring It On sequels. Every other Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legends, Blair Witch Project, Scary Movie, Rocky, and most of the Disney movie sequels (including Honey, I Shrunk the Kids). Along with the occasional Star Trek movie, i.e. The Final Frontier. And then when you shift actors around due to their refusing to come back and/or they're dead: - Viva Rock Vegas - Grease 2 - The Next Karate Kid - Staying Alive - Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights - Blues Brothers 2000 - Caddyshack 2 Then you get trilogies where the second movie wasn't bad, in fact it even surpassed its original--but then there's that painful third or fourth movie: - Terminator - The Godfather - X-Men - Spider-Man - Batman (that steady decline from the first movie directed by Tim Burton down toward Batman and Robin) - American Pie (2 was pretty decent, Wedding was crap) - And recently added to the list Indiana Jones (While I enjoyed Kingdom, it definitely brings down the standard of those movies). Hell, The Mummy Returns and the spin-off The Scorpion King, weren't exactly batting it out of the park either, but they were still enjoyable to watch. And yes, there are some great sequels out there, which can be proven by the fact that we have power-trilogies like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, and hell, even Evil Dead. But seriously, when it comes to sequels there's so much shit out there you can't help but tread cautiously when it comes to seeing the second, third, or fourth installment these days. I mean, if you're paying $10 to see a movie these days, you want it to be worth your while, right? I'm not knocking on this upcoming third Mummy movie at all when I say as an "action movie sequel" it's designed to be "fun to look at." Action movies aren't exactly well-noted for dialogue and story content. And whether or not you gentlemen were regarding my comment, I'm just clarifying. Anyway, I'll probably see this in the theater since I saw all of the Mummy movies in their first week. Yep. NUCKLEARKNIGHT |
Posts: 552/577 Originally posted by FX Seems like people do that a lot... I know I've though movies weren't going to be good just because they were sequels. Although there are some movies that I wanted to have sequels. Like the Saw movies. Great sequels that I always though would be better than the previous one. And they were. FX |
Posts: 3306/3775 Originally posted by NUCKLEARKNIGHT I was afraid to watch it because I thought it would be scary. ... I was also afraid of ET... I don't see why everyone is assuming it's going to be bad just because it's a sequel, although there are still chances of suckage people don't need to go "oh, it's a sequel, it'll suck" Also, was there a need to state that it was from the producers of the Mummy and the Mummy Returns in the trailer? Posts: 551/577 Yeah I think I might feel a little off watching it without Rachel in it but whatever. Looks like it's worth watching. Corny lines by Brendan Frasier, special effects galore, and of course mummies.
| I remember watching the first one when I was younger and it scared me to death. Now these movies are just like adventure movies that are just fun to watch. Rogue |
Posts: 4367/11918 It's funny how they figured the Terracotta warriors of Xi'an into it since a few of them are on display at the Bowers in Santa Ana.
| Anyway, barring that, this actually looks like it'll be fun to watch. I mean, I'd prefer they brought back Rachel, but hey whatever. It's an action movie sequel. It's just meant to be fun to look at. Shuyin |
Posts: 1687/1858 Apparently they dropped the number.
| When I heard of this movie, it made me go "ugh". That is until I saw Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. First I get a movie with Jet Li and Jackie Chan fighing. Now I get one where he fights Michelle Yeoh. Win! (This movie could quite possibly suck, but that's irrelevant.) FX |

Posts: 27/35 why do people keep making unneeded sequals? the story ended with the mummy returns why do we need another story about breden fraser killing undead?
| i think they're just out to make money, so this will probably for the same way as all the other lame sequals that were made jsut for money. FX |
Posts: 3228/3775 Really, as long as we have Brendan Frasier, we're fine, cause he made those movies. | Lord Vulkas Mormonus |
Posts: 2919/4541 It sounds like a different style of movie, but with Jet Li as a martial arts mummy? Who would actually say no?
| It sounds like it could be good, but I do think that it's too bad theat Rachel Weisz left the movie. Elara |

| Just trying to keep these things together. Found a blog that's keeping track of the reported progress of the third Mummy movie: http://mummy-3-trailer.blogspot.com/ Turns out the story's taking place in China this time around. Not bad, it could work HOWEVER the actors playing Evelyn and Alex are different. No Rachel Weisz. The title they've chosen, sans numbers, is The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and will feature Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. Elara |
Posts: 3633/9736 Tiny comment on Disney sequels is the truest thing I have ever read. Especially on the animated movies.
| Anywho, why are they even bothering to make a third Mummy? I really think that the ship has sailed on that one after the Scorpion King. Of course, it would be interesting to see how they bring Imhotep back this time. This is a long thread. Click here to view it. | |
