Actually it is after the Winter Solstice (approximately December 21st, give or take a day depending on the year) that the days get longer. Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year, and the beginning of winter. However the longer days are not really noticeable until after the beginning of Feburary (hence the holiday on the 2nd). Regardless though, Spring does not truly begin until the Spring Equinox (March 20 or 21st).

Almost every holiday seems to be based off of Paganism somehow...which is why I get so pissed when I read other religions refer to Paganism negatively, especially Christianity. We based soooo much off of Paganism and yet we have the nerve to say that Paganism is "wrong" **shakes her head**

But back on topic, haha...my grandpop brought something to my attention today...it has been getting darker a bit later. I know it naturally does that from December 31 is it? But anyway...I dunno. Might be all in my head, but I kinda agree with him. Then again, its also like 6 degrees here.

El Nino? What El Nino? Southern California got no El Nino! I was upset by that. And of course the weather is making good on that early spring thing, it hit 90 degrees in some places on Sunday.

Of course what I find hilarious is that to Pagans Feburary 2nd is Imbolc (or Candlemas), a major holiday and fire festival where rituals are performed to bring back the sun (or spring). Of all the pagan-to-modern conversions Imbolc to Groundhog Day is got to be the weirdest!

O_o Nice poem.

For some reason I don't get "allergies" in the spring or fall even...I'll have a random fit in the middle of the winter and summer though.

I wasn't too happy about our milder winter though...I guess I do kinda believe that "In like a lamb, out like a lion" phrase...it also works the other way as well, but...it just always felt like whenever it took us a while to get winter, it took longer to go away. >.o

So reports from Punxsutawney have been that Phil, the groundhog, didn't see his shadow this year.

We're in for an early spring apparently.

Phil's report, translated from its original goundhog-ese:

El Nino has caused high winds, heavy snow, ice and freezing temperatures in the west;
Here in the East, with much milder winter we have been blessed.

Global warming has caused a great debate;
Mild winter makes it seem just great.

On this Groundhog Day, we think of one thing:
Will we have winter or will we have spring?

On Gobbler’s Knob, I see no shadow today;
I predict early spring is on the way!

**nods** Yah, he is...

So...we're getting spring six weeks earlier, eh? So does that mean that we get "spring" at the end of this month? As much as I hate the cold, I am going to laugh my ass off if during that time we get an uber snowstorm. XD

It's one of those nifty holidays to get excited about because no one else in the world would care--like Leif Erickson Day, Gorilla Suit Day, or Talk Like a Pirate Day (My friend and I dressed up like wenches and went around town talking like pirates just for shits. Even went to class like that. It was great!).

Hell, I'd love to be in Punxsutawney next year. They have huge celebrations and parties for Phil.

You're lucky for being in Pennsylvania, Xeios.

I'm honestly surprised I didn't know this, you know, reigning from pennsylvania of course. it's kinda sad actually.

My Aunt also usually calls and wished us a happy groundhog's day then comes over and brings groundhog shaped cookies. She's an oddball. XD
