Since Comic-Con is on the horizon, I've been frantically reading what comics I can to be prepared for this year's talk and panels. But I also haven't hit up a comic shop for the latest issues, arcs, series, etc in quite some time.
I'm hearing a lot of good buzz surrounding Marvel's Secret Invasion. Haven't seen anything on it, though. Marvel's last big must-read, Civil War, was sort of disappointing. I dunno, it just didn't send me, I guess. Anyway, if anyone's looking for a list of the apparent imperatives to check out in order to get half of the things Wizard raves about these days, here's the basics so you might get a little caught up (some of these are decades old): - Alex Ross (Kingdom Come, etc) - Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta) - Civil War (And all of the Marvel heroes featured: Ironman, Cap, Thor, X-Men, etc) - Identity Crisis (Same with DC as Marvel) - Marc Silvestri (Witchblade, Wolverine) - Frank Miller (Sin City, 300, Batman, etc) - Robert Kirkman (Invincible, Battle Pope, Walking Dead, etc) - Neil Gaiman (Sandman, Death, Neverwhere, etc) - David Clowes (Ghost World, Art School Confidential) - Brian Azarello (100 Bullets, etc) - Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo) - Art Spiegelman (Maus) - Garth Ennis (Preacher, etc) - Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (Spiderman: Blue, Daredevil: Yellow, and the upcoming Captain America: White) - Runaways And above all... - Stan "The Man" Lee Not saying that he's the greatest, but he did create a massive amount of the epic heroes of Marvel before-Marvel-was-Marvel. Anyway, anyone got anything they'd like to add? I'm interested in reading many more and letting that list grow much more. (Last edited by Rogue on 03-27-08 06:31 PM) |

Originally posted by Rogue Well, he actually created Marvel, the most powerful comic juggernaut ever. But you can't leave out Joss Whedon. He's writing the current X-Men series, along with the three new Firefly books Dark Horse is publishing. |

Heh, yeah Joss has also been putting out the new Serenity and Buffy comics lately. He's also got things like Fray, Runaways, and the occasional X-Men comic going.
I also forgot basic ones to know like: - Jim Lee (X-Men, etc. Gave many X-Women their more-widely recognized look) - Jack Kirby (Golden Age artist from the days of Timely, and worked side-by-side with Stan for years) - Mike Mignola (Hellboy, etc) When I think of more that I've forgotten, I'll post them. |

What sort of Heroes spoilers we talking?
The show's latest spoilers aren't even serious any more, it seems. When I asked Jeph Loeb about the "Villains" preview that he and Tim Kring revealed at this sci-fi film festival in December was only just to have something to show people. I think I posted a chunk of it in the Heroes thread. Anyway, if you're talking about the $30 graphic novel collection that was published recently, it can be read here: http://www.nbc.com/Heroes/novels/ I don't think I've been very helpful on this front, but I'll see what I can dig up. |

For the first time in quite a while I went down to the local comic shop for Wednesday's latest and picked up a the first installment of Secret Invasion, Garth Ennis' and Darick Robertson's The Boys and the new American Splendor ( I didn't realize Harvey Pekar was doing any new ones).
Finally picked up House of M, Infinite Crisis and a few more comics from the library (mostly things like more Usagi Yojimbo and Groo). Probably a silly question, but since I'm not a net pirate, anyone know where I can get scans of Alan Moore's Lost Girls? I want to read it, but it's going for $75 ($54 on Amazon). |

The prologue to Secret Invasion's been posted online by Marvel in their new Digital Comics arena: http://www.marvel.com/digitalcomics/titles/Secret_Invasion_Prologue.2008.1
I picked up the first issue a couple weeks back. Not bad. Looking forward to the rest of the arc. In the meantime, word has it Grant Morrison is going to pull together "Final Crisis" for DC. Even he makes the crack that this is another Crisis for Marvel's "Distinguished Competition" what with other titles under the label like Identity Crisis and Infinite Crisis. So yeah, maybe the World's Finest will get their apocalypse afterall. |

Apparently a Runaways movie may be in the works soon: http://blog.newsarama.com/2008/05/22/runaways-head-for-hollywood-with-vaughan-in-tow/
The script is going to be written by Brian K. Vaughan who was originally writing the series, though in the more recent years Joss Whedon's been writing the stories. The movie's expected to come out in 2011. |

R.I.P. Michael Turner
At last Wizard World L.A., the Aspen artists and writers imparted to us of Michael's tragic decline, but that he was also working his damnedest to churn out some material for Free Comic Book Day. A professional to the end for his fans and a great talent who will be very sorely missed. <3 |

R.I.P Mike Turner indeed. I've been REALLY getting into comics lately after a a long span of time of only reading them sparingly. I recently just picked up Marvel Zombies vs Army of Darkness. It's awesome. I really want to start reading Astro City, Watchmen (I've been told that my local comic shop should be getting next week), Sandman, ANY Evil Dead/Army of Darkness comics, and some Golden Age comics if I'm lucky enough. |

So BET's going to be putting out a Black Panther cartoon. While I'm interested and Black Panther is a positive role-model for the black community, the animation looks really weird.
It looks like they took the artwork out of the comic and made it move. It's just... odd. Link: http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1513658585/bctid1690279286 Kinda reminds me of Invincible's new series that still features the dialogue bubbles: http://www.invincibleseries.com/ |
