| The world around Christoph grew dark as the embers of his campfire dimmed and died. He closed his eyes to force his pupils to dilate, opening them moments later to a softly illuminated environment. He lay in a thin sleeping bag, propped up on a barren tree. He reached down and patted the head of his companion, Terri, who had rested her muzzle on his left leg. She closed her eyes and smiled.
