This is probably one of the rare times I'll say that the movie looks better than the book. Kick-Ass is only 8 issues in, with the script out a couple years ago when there was still only one issue published.
You can watch the red band trailers at http://iamkick-ass.com. Seriously, the book was all right, but nothing I'd consider a favorite. Even on paper, Hit Girl and Big Daddy were the more interesting characters. |

Yeah, I got that from watching the preview. I dunno... it really just comes across as some stupid thing that a group of 13 year olds came up with.

Originally posted by Elara It's funny you should word it that way, because I've come to dislike the work of Mark Millar (the guy who wrote Kick-Ass). Millar also wrote Wanted and Marvel's Civil War, and I felt REALLY dirty and disgusted after reading Wanted (which also has a movie, which is NOTHING like it). Millar is one of the highest grossing comic writers of the last decade, and his writing is just so childish at points. Like calling someone a "homo" is designed to be ironic and real. It seems like people just keep buying his stuff because they think his work is brooding and edgy. It's an Emperor's New Clothes situation. Wanted and Civil War HEAVILY take from Watchmen. In fact, the parts that mimic (or rip-off if you want to call it that) are the only parts with any real depth. Hmm... (Last edited by Rogue on 03-19-10 04:00 PM) |

Heh, it's weird that I feel so annoyed by the comic's writer, yet for some reason I'm interested in the movie. I guess because it went its own way, maybe it won't be like the book at all?

I dunno, still looks like it's aimed at the under 15 crowd, but then again who knows. But I can see you being pissed at the guy, he basically stole from one of your favorites.

See, that's another interesting thing about it. It looks like it's geared toward the younger crowd, but it's a bloody, bloody book. I mean, Hit-Girl is supposed to be like 9 or 10 and she curses A LOT and kills people and, if I remember right, she's rather racist.
Kick-Ass, himself, is a teenage boy who pretty much just jerks off and reads comics and then buys a scuba suit and practices his iconic poses before he decides he's enough of a superhero. On his first attempt at stopping criminals (two guys tagging a wall, in the movie it's apparently two guys trying to steal a car or something), they ask what he's looking at, he answers, "A couple of homos," at which point they beat him, stab him and he stumbles into the street where he's hit by a Mercedes. While Millar seemed like he was trying to capture real life, it's pretty meh. For some reason I still feel like watching the movie. Weird. Maybe it's just for a chance to write a review. |

Even jackasses can come up with good stories. In someone else's hands, it could be good. This movie has a certain level of promise. Nothing extraordinary, but still somewhat fun.
It kind of looks like Superbad superhero'd. |

While it didn't quite match up with the book, especially regarding Kick-Ass' love life, I'd say it was definitely better than the book.
You'll just watch it for Hit-Girl. Kick-Ass, himself, is practically a supporting character in his own movie. (Last edited by Rogue on 04-18-10 04:55 AM) |

I honestly disliked it. I know this is going to make me sound old, but the movie had no morality. How the fuck do Hit Girl and Big Daddy get the same level of heroism as Kick Ass? When Kick Ass defended the dude outside the theater, I was REALLY following the movie, but once Hit Girl and Big Daddy got their costumes and started killing with no repurcussions, I started falling off the bandwagon.
The movie had a lot of promise but just ended up being a dumb flashy action movie with geek fufillment. |

Welcome to Mark Millar's universe. His stuff tends to be so condescending and inexplicable.
I have to write a review about this thing, and well, I keep defaulting to trying to explain out what you see on the screen from what's given in the book. First off, Kick-Ass never follows the standard hero story structure that's been fully captured for us by Joseph Campbell in "Hero With a Thousand Faces." That being, he receives the call to action, loses his mentor, and then carries on an important battle or journey alone (with little or no assistance). Kick-Ass, in the book, just decides to start dressing up as a hero and work on iconic poses, then eventually work on fighting crime just for shits. In the movie, they wrote in he and his friend getting mugged before he decides to make the transformation along this peeve about people watching bad things happen and not helping. The one who actually DOES follow the hero's journey is Hit-Girl. The movie has a completely different origin for her and Big Daddy than is in the book (that being Big Daddy created this idea that the mob had killed Hit-Girl's mother so that they could go on a Punisher-like quest for vengeance just for fun with his daughter. They had NO connection with the mob). Pretty much the whole killing without repercussion follows the book entirely. You're just supposed to think of Big Daddy and Hit-Girl as though they're Frank Castle (Millar even freaking compares the two in the book. Ugh..) I guess the validation that Mark Millar was looking for when creating the two killing machines was, "If Punisher can do it, I can too." Then again when you get things like "Punisher Warzone," where Punisher completely lacks any humanity to begin with, you get things like this. I have a love/hate relationship with Mark Millar honestly. More hate than squishy, fuzzy good feelings about him and his work, though. |

Yeah, I'm definitely not a fan of this Millar guy, then. He strikes me as one of those kind of people that think that flash and controversy can supersede good storytelling.
For the record, I never even liked Punisher. |

I'm not ashamed to admit that I absolutely loved this movie. I haven't read the book, so I can't really compare the two. But I felt this was a refreshing break from the typical superhero movies that have come out within the past 10 years.

Here's a clip from the movie, though it really broaches on spoiler: Evil Lair entrance v8 from Jeff Wadlow on Vimeo. (Last edited by Rogue on 04-17-13 07:08 PM) |

Not sure who many of the heroes are except for Kick-Ass, Hit Girl, and the friend of his with the Captain America-like blue head covering with the white star. Managed to get Kick-Ass 2, as well as the book that goes between it and the original (Hit-Girl: Prelude), out of the library.
I hope what they do with Jim Carrey's character what they did with Nicholas Cage's Big Daddy and expand on him. Colonel Stars was awesome. I guess they would be if they're taking the two characters of Colonel Stars and Lieutenant Stripes and making them one person, Colonel Stars and Stripes. Seriously, jazzed to read the third installment, but looks like there's probably another section to go between 2 and 3. The thing I hate about Mark Millar's writing, though, is how much he relies on throwing out random pop culture references like the kids checking their Facebook accounts or what they're watching. I'm sure he backs this shit by saying it's a slice of life and people name off products they use and shows they watch all the time, but it's like he thinks his readers will see this and think, "Haha, I get all these references! Booooy, I am soooo smart, and this is tailored for people like me who know all about this stuff." It's like Family Guy with their one-percenter jokes. |
