(I hope this is where this thread belongs)
So I rarely watch my television, but as I was writing last night I had Cartoon Network on for white noise. About a half hour into writing I chance a look at the tv and see Goku staring back at me. Holy crap.

Of course, I was excited, not having seen the show since I was a small child. Something seems vaguely different (maybe the narrator's voice?), but it could just be the many years of seperation. Is anyone else even a little excited?

I believe it's Dragonball Kai they are bringing over.

Basically, it's Dragonball Z in much better quality, with most of the filler removed.

Yes, it is titled Drangonball Kai. I was still surprised to see it on tv with cartoonnetwork claiming it to be their 'new' animated series.

Meh, I'm 120 some episodes into the original and prefer it by far. Way better music, and not to mention the 16:9 aspect ratio for Kai is just technically not correct... since this show is very old and originally aired in full screen, so it looks obviously stretched at a lot of parts to me. The redub isn't as great as the original too and they replaced some great voice actors (though admittedly some aren't around anymore, like Tenshinhan's, etc).

I mean, just look at this epicness (potential-but-old-obvious-spoilers)-

Couldn't agree more with Xeo.

However, I did cry for joy at the return of the show. Despite some of the things I don't like, I just miss the atmosphere of everyone being in love with this show. I seriously spoke with almost every single customer about DBZ....erm...Kai...being on TV. Most of them were older than me and in there with their kids, and sadly their kids for the most part were like "What?"

Yeah, rarely anyone seems to remember it. There hasnt been anything on american television even remotely close to this show. Even the movie that was made a couple years back disgraces the show. I miss the old days when toonami was around and there was nothing but anime on.

I've been watching this series like crazy (the old one, not Kai) and I'm up to the Cell saga now. I only have a few seasons left and I'll own the whole thing.

I guess you guys do have a pretty good point, it was like a huge "movement" for the late 90's / early 2000's... just another huge phase I guess. It also probably helped that DBZ really did kind of spark up anime here in the West a good bit.

What is it now, Naruto? I wonder if it's even that popular. I know it kind of was a few years ago, but I wonder if it'll be even close to how long DBZ kept going.

But yeah, DBZ is just our generation I guess. I wonder if most of the fanbase for DBK are older teen/young adults, like us, lol.

Hmm....I still think DBZ(K)takes the cake. Naruto is super popular it seems, but I don't know. DBZ was actually here before the late 90's...I suppose. Cartoon Network is national, but then there are "local" stations, although I see a lot of other states have their versions of them? Like, do any of you guys have that Warner Bros. Station? Here it's WB17, but I know I've seen it in other places.

WB here played Sailor Moon and DBZ back in the early 90s for a bit, (WB even played a bit of the StarS season of SM, but that's another topic.) and that's where most of the people I talked to who are a bit older than me remember it from.

Point is though, I think it had a bit of a longer run here than Naruto, and there's more available to kids now than TV. I remember running home from school to get my homework done so I could watch some cartoons (including DBZ) now I'm more or less "Ehh, I can watch it on OnDemand or catch it on Youtube."

Ima stop before I get going TOO much. Even if I didn't like DBZ, I could still see it being a cultural icon in many nations and a good tool for social experiment. XD

Yeah, I have WB17 as well. Although, I live in the same general area as you.

But yeah, DBZ had a much greater impact on people than Naruto. DBZ was something that everyone got into, no matter what 'clique' you fit into. Naruto was more of a nerdy (geeky? dorky? i dont even know anymore ) thing, and the hype only lasted for so long. I dont know if it's because we now have better internet and you can watch every episode before its aired on tv, but it died down pretty fast.

I do remember when I was younger.

At the time pretty much all boys liked Dragonball, and we were all waiting for volumes to come out.

The first one to get it would be awesome^2.

I honestly don't remember WB17 showing this, but maybe I did see it on there a few times. Were they also showing the Ocean dub like Toonami did for awhile?

It's pretty hilarious, apparently they ripped out a lot of music from the Megaman series, whom also had Funi's Goku voicing Megaman...

I don't remember much of it on WB either. I was really little when it was on that station. But people have told me, and i believe them...I vaguely rememebr seeing the theme, going "cool." and then watching He-Man before I went off to Kindergarten for the day. XD

And yeah, it did seem to be a "boys only" show for a while. I was shunned back in the beginning of 5th grade. The girls wouldn't get into it with me, and the boys didn't care that I liked DBZ, because I was a girl and couldn't hang out with them.

I remember spending many a day after school in the beginning of that year, grossing out the girls as they watched me kick the tar out of the boys for being mean to me about it. XD

THAT'S why DBZ will always be iconic to me though. It's more than just a TV show. It was an interesting part of my life, in general, during the time DBZ was REALLY popular on CartoonNetwork. And I made very interesting decisions off of it, such as my first Saturday detention for beating up said boys for not accepting the fact that I liked the show. XD

Btw, I have the whole series too...I die happy and then come back to live only to die happy again, every time I even SEE the collection sitting there on my shelf. XD

Again, I totally agree with you DBZ was a big movement of our childhood. I remember lots of media as well from backpacks, to binders and folders, had some posters myself, etc. I remember all the jocks and whatnot would make fun of us nerdier folk about it and all, but half the time they knew everything about the show and what they were talking about... chances are they DID watch it too.

I also remember when I bought some movies of it (holy crap, back with the VHS releases!) I'd sometimes see guys that looked way older than me picking out some DBZ releases too, haha.

Man, speaking of those VHS releases... anyone remember those giant VHS boxsets of sorts? Or they collected entire Saga's, always saw them at Suncoast.

I'm getting all nostalgic thinking about all this, and all the more reason why I'm enjoying watching it so much now in Japanese. I think at this point I definitely prefer the Japanese voices and music, but yeah, I grew up with the dub stuff so I'll never bash it too much! I will say though if you guys only watched it dubbed, it really is cool going through it in Japanese... it's BOTH nostalgically awesome and a pretty fresh experience since there's a lot of changes. Very fun. I also never really finished the Buu saga when it was on TV... started losing interest back then around that time, but I'll finish it this time, so I really look forward to that.

Kind of a shame DB never kicked off that much in the US, if that one were bigger too DB/Z could have been even bigger, hehe.

I'm even kind of looking forward to watching GT eventually.
(THAT dub I won't backup though... the music and catch lines were so bad from the few episodes I saw on TV. I'm sure this'll be a lot better in Japanese).

Last but not least, if you guys haven't seen all of Dragon Ball ... GET ON THAT! I watched all if it earlier this year and it was such a fun experience, going in with so much history and love for DBZ, it was awesome. Not to mention the final arcs with Piccolo and such practically feel just like DBZ! Loved the evolution between the two shows.
(and if you didn't know this like I did for awhile, the characters do grow up in DB! By the end of the series Goku and co look like they do in DBZ... it was really cool to see).

I always planned on watching Dragon Ball Kai. It takes away the fillers, and presents us with much better quality. But despite how amazing the series is, it's rare for me to go through an entire series, despite the fact I know absolutely everything that happens.

I also have been reminded of the important moments through Dragon Ball Z Abridged. Does anyone watch that? Definitely the best abridged series out there.

I remember going to video stores and seeing the VHS's with the pictures on the side of the cover, so if you have all of the videos, it makes a full scene.

Not sure if I've seen DBZ abridged... I imagine it's epic though.

Which reminds me, anyone catch bits of the UK Dub? Holy ... shit.

If you're talking about the DBZ Abridged by Team Four Star, then yes.

It is awesome (then again, the cast is more or less the all-star team of the abridged world).

Hahahahaha. Oh the lunchboxes and ther paraphonalia. Despite my obsession with the show, when given the choice, I was still gunning more for my Star Wars stuff.

Although now I have quite the impressive collection in general, including Goku standing atop one of my shelves, and a Sailor Uranus action figure sitting on a toilet from an old dollhouse set of my sister's...both guarding my room ever so viligantly. XD

As for the video? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. But yeah..."what the fuck" XD
