On Saturday, January 8, 2011, Jared Loughner opened fire at a political gathering outside of a Safeway in Tucson, AZ leaving 14 wounded and 6 dead. Among the dead are a Federal Judge and a 9 year old girl, and among the wounded is the main target, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. She was shot in the head, and while in stable condition doctors are still assessing the damage, though signs are hopeful.

Reaction from the shooter's parents

Latest status of Congresswoman Giffords

What are your opinions on this? There is a lot of discussion of the role of violent rhetoric being used in politics, particularly on the right (like Palin's infamous cross-hairs map). Do you think this had a factor? Loughner was apparently a anti-government conspiricy nutcase with severe mental problems, so it is probable that such talk could have gotten to him. Then again, so could movies where the "heroes" kill a bunch of people to thwart a conspiracy and save the country... to you and me it is fiction and entertainment... but to a mentally ill person?

UPDATE!!!

So, in true disgusting fashion, the pariahs at Westboro Baptist Church are planning to picket the funerals of the victims, starting with the funeral of the 9 year old girl. Numerous groups in Tucson are planning to line the funeral route to keep WBC away from the mourners, including the local Republican Party. Furthermore, Arizona is now looking at passing legislation to make it a misdemeanor to protest funerals. I applaud this and hope that all states follow suit. Funerals are a personal matter, and those horrid people have no right to harass people dealing with their grief.

The WBC makes me sick. That man should have saved his ammo for them. That would be an issue that I would have no remorse for.

You know, I go through my life trying to suppress the urge to punch people in the face. I have an anger issue. I don't want to hurt people, though.

Then these WBC assholes make me reconsider it. Every fucking time I hear them mentioned.

I consider Arizona my second homestate. I've spent months, perhaps even the equivalent of years there.

In truth, it's still the wild west. People carry guns. They have to have "No Firearms" signs at restaurants and other public places. Those signs are more common that "No Smoking" signs.

Anyway, I'm not sure what I feel. I mean, it's tragic that people are getting shot up.

As for the WBC, while they're media whores, it's to the point that it's flattering. You know you're doing something right if they're picketing you, I guess. It's sort of like if The Simpsons or MAD Magazine parody or mock you, you know you've made it.

That's not to say that I condone their shitty attention-seeking behavior. They're parasites who go after heavily-publicized events and make up some ridiculous reason to picket it just so they can be camera sluts and get in the news some more.

Anyway, enough about them. Glad the congresswoman's health is improving.

Now I understand if picketing for the soldiers is one thing. I don't understand. We are sinners that is true... but I do not serve a god who thinks that because we sin it brings nothing but death and brimstone. That's wrong on SO MANY LEVELS.

Well, they aren't so much saying that soldiers are sinners as that their deaths are a sign that God is angry that we allow homosexuals to exist in this country.

Seriously.

AND they back picketing funerals because they say that a funeral is a practice of worshiping the dead and they argue that this is an act of blasphemy.

Them and Pat Robertson, who immediately announced that feminism and homosexuality were the cause for 9/11.

What makes me sick is, locally, all I've been hearing about is that the poor baby was the granddaughter of a former Philadelphia Phillies manager. I love sports. And I'm quite the fan of my baseball team...but really? I don't give a fuck WHO'S granddaughter she was. It's that she was A granddaughter, as well as a daughter and...a 9-year-old BABY. Wtf. Harming a child is one of the worst things someone can do, and this was more than simply harming that baby.

As far as WBC is concerned...ehh. It's like Rogue said. You're doing SOMETHING right. They recently protested at my old high school. They're an overplayed, unfunny "joke". I don't take anything about them seriously.

But, Go Arizona for trying to outlaw protesting funerals.

But the shooter's mental stability and what caused certain things to go on in his own mind...I just hope they don't overlook that. We need to care about WHY things happen. **shrugs** Better for future problem solving.

The one thing that I do think is really stupid though is that the only reason that girl was there was because she was born on 9/11, and so she got paraded around at political events. If politicians didn't do shit like that then she would still be alive, and that is truly tragic to me.
