http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/8375276/Tsunami-hits-Japan-after-8.8-magnitude-earthquake.html
Largest quake in Japan's history so I hear. There have been two large aftershocks and on Wednesday there was a 7.2 in the same area. I hear conflicting reports on the size of the tsunami that hit... anywhere from 6 to 10 meters. Tokyo stopped, trains, subways etc all shut down. The quake was felt as far away as Beijing, China. Video of tsunami this was made earlier when they thought it was a 7.9. Tsunami warnings have been issued for the majority of countries along the Pacific coast. |

I was watching NHK last night and it is absolutely crazy. The images of big fishing boats floating into the city is just bizarre.
I have a couple friends from there, but luckily they live farther from the major danger areas and are okay. However, a couple of my friends here on exchange have family who live right in the thick of it and I'm pretty worried about them. |

Though I'm not one for prayer, my thoughts are with them.

I know what you mean. This is a horrific natural disaster and I just hope that they can contain the problems they are having with some of the nuclear plants over there... it would be even worse for Japan to have to deal with a nuclear event on top of everything else.

Yeah, this is really not good at all. My hopes and prayers go out to all of them. It sounds like there's still more stuff to worry about too with the tsunami moving.
I don't know if it's just me being younger back in the day and not remembering stuff like this, but it almost feels like this has been a pretty bad decade of natural disasters. I'm no believer of 2012 or anything like that, but yeah... not good. |

The thing is the Japan's Nuclear Power Plants were never designed for an earthquake higher than 7.9 that is why this happened and they are lucky that more are not melting down. Anyway I heard that republican have cut funding for the tsunami warning system that is based out of Hawaii. Also i think we should pay and implement what Japan has for a emergency system for earthquakes because I shudder to think about what might happen in California or anywhere else in this country if one that is higher than 8.5 hits here. |

Well this was something I didn't hear about on the news. I actually got a phone call from some of the people in reserve units that are discussing coming together with another unit and leaving out for support.
This is the only time I do NOT want to take up the offer of going to Japan. I would love to go however... Digging dead bodies out of rubble is not my thing. Bitmap I hope your cousin gets into contact with you soon. I really do. |

I think it is more pulling bodies out of water than rubble... but yeah. I learned two things about the news coverage here thanks to this story... firstly that we only get NBC, MSNBC, and CNN with out current cable company, and secondly that only the later two of that list bothered to cover the story. In Los Angeles they had it on all the news stations apparently.
Have I mentioned that I absolutely hate my cable company? Damn monopolistic bastards! |

Just to let everyone know: My cousin was actually not in Japan at the time during the earthquake. Last I understood she was stationed in Japan but she left two days before it actually happened.
She is home. And she is sad that Japan is in the situation as it is right now. She really loves Japan. But i'm glad she is safe. |

Glad to hear it, Bitmap.
Here is the latest update from Reuters... the death toll is estimated at about 10,000 now.... http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/13/us-japan-quake-idUSTRE72A0SS20110313?pageNumber=1 |

Last I heard the potential number of missing people was like 88,000... jeeze.
Luckily it sounds like the nuclear meltdown is somewhat under control and definitely hasn't turned out to be as bad as originally thought, at least I hope so. Thanks for the update Bitmap, glad she's okay. |

I think that all the areas hit by the tsunami are getting help, but it is still good to offer aid to Japan because this was a very large disaster and it is nothing to make light of, at all.
Interesting bit of photography put up by the New York Times, a before and after look at cities hit hardest by the waves. |

Omg. Humon! I have a bunch of her stuff favorited on my Deviantart. It's been a while since I've looked at her recent work, it seems.
Lots of Hetalia-like strips these days, it seems. Not bad. Returning to the original topic, I hope Japan's taking this as lightly as Humon portrays them to. I mean, over 10,000 dead is not something to sneeze at. |

As most of you know, I have very deep connections with Japan. I lived there, speak the language and have many friends and what feels like family there, most of whom I don't have contact information for. I actually had friends from Japan staying with me at my house when the tsunami and earthquake hit. Both of their parents had to walk 5-8 hours at midnight in order to get home, many of their friends they still haven't heard from.
Getting off the subject of the depression, here is a couple links that give you a bit of an idea of the grief, hope and love that's going on in Japan. They are all not very long/big, please take a bit of time. Just a bit of insight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdMzjq7J_8w Why I love Japan: http://www.facebook.com/notes/jun-shiomitsu/japan-quake-as-seen-from-twitter-translated-by-me-so-quality-questionable/10150121176733830 |

I've done what little I could do so far toward the Red Cross relief funds.
A very dear friend of mind just came back from studying abroad in Japan and he's devastated. I feel so terrible for him. My heart goes out to everyone effected by this disaster, and I hope that releif and good news come to them soon. In the meantime, I'll just continue doing what I can, and I'm glad that many others have taken the same sort of stance, despite not being personally effected. (PS: What cable company do you have, if you don't mind my asking Elara. Local news here doesn't seem to be too great. Philly is fairly lucky, I suppose, but I still get most of my info via internet due to the stupidity of news here. =/ ) |
