Yeah, I realize that this is mostly going to be a me and Katana thread... but I know that a few other people here like hockey.

So, Preseason has officially started. Are you excited? What are you looking forward to most this season?

I'm watching the Pens/Red Wings game right now, and I have to say that I am super happy to see Malkin looking this good. I mean, he looks fricken amazing!

I also am looking forward to seeing how well the Jets do in their first season back, and seeing Jagr play again, even if it's on the Flyers. Between him, Simmonds, and Talbot I might actually watch more of their games.

I'll make my obligatory post for the year here, since I don't really post anymore anyway. I'm much more excited for the season as a whole, whereas in past years I've just been excited for the Flyers. Brendan Shanahan stepping in as disciplinarian should take a lot of the dirtier players off the ice (for example, Jody Shelley already got suspended the rest of the preseason and the first five games of the regular season which, in addition to being a good punishment, should actually HELP the Flyers) and let the clean players play without fear.

Obviously, it was a tragic offseason. Three players died individually, and then of course there was the plane crash that killed that entire KHL team. That, plus Crosby still not being able to practice means that this season is even more important for the players to honor those guys that can no longer do what they love. I'm also very excited for the Jets, Atlanta's been seriously improving the last few years, Ladd is a good captain and player, and they're projected to be one of the dark horses in the east this year. It should be a great season.

Nice to see you make a post. Maybe try for more than once a year? Eh?

But yeah, the deaths this summer were really sad, especially that plan crash. I'm still surprised that two people survived it.

Go Jets! Your new logo stinks but you got guts!

Also Go Canadiens! You have what it takes. Just bury the puck!

Boo preseason!

I like you.

Pre-season usually doesn't particularly excite me. Especially since I had to turn down both games I could have gone to, which turned out to be pretty fricken good games.

Winter Classic though...Awwwww man. Sucks that I won't even be in the state when we have it. Fml. Seriously.

And I'm going to say something that I never thought I would say: I'm more excited for the other teams than I am for the Flyers at the moment. I hope they change this for me, but right now, a lot of teams have to deal with other things that makes my heart go out to them, like you guys mentioned.

And trading Richards? Really Flyers? Because of this, I can no longer say "Mike Richards" without bowing my head in sorrow and adding "may he rest in peace." That's seriously how I feel! You guys are dicks. That "C" didn't stand for "Captain!" It stood for "Christ!" I still had A LOT of faith in him.

(Edit: PS, NHL 12...awwwwweeeesssoooommmmmeeeee! Play it if you haven't yet!)

The Richards and Carter trades, while regrettable, were necessary to send a message to the rest of the guys on the team. Both of them were known for caring more about hitting the bars, even before game days, than they were for focusing on their game on the ice. Richards, even moreso, was turning into a joke of a captain. His first few years here, he was hands-down my favorite player. But last year, I started to not be able to stand him. In addition to his lack of commitment to the team, locker room clashes with Chris Pronger put Richards' ability to lead the team into question and essentially divided the locker room. Being given the "C" is one thing; earning it is another. When a guy like Chris Pronger, who's won a Stanley Cup, two gold medals, a Hart Trophy, and has been to six all-star games (most of those achievements coming while HE had the "C"), you don't whine when he steps up to try and incite a struggling team to perform better just because you have the "C" on your chest and he doesn't. Granted, it was a huge slap in the face to Richards when Pronger got the "C" for Team Canada in the 2010 Olympics, but maybe he should have also taken that as a hint that this man can lead a team, and that he should at least co-exist with him, if not step aside. Richards handled the situation immaturely, his attitude towards winning was less than savory, and his on-ice performance was slipping. That being said, it still definitely sucks to lose a player like that, because he had so much potential and did do a lot of great things for the Flyers, but it was necessary in a way to move forward as a team. Carter...I feel no remorse at losing him.

That being said, I really like the guys the Flyers have brought in. Schenn has looked good in the little bit he's played before getting hurt, Simmonds' mix of physical play and actual talent is very quickly making him my favorite Flyer, Voracek hasn't been phenomenal but then again, it's still pre-season; Nikolai Zherdev had five goals in four games in last pre-season, look at where he ended up. And Couturier probably isn't NHL-ready yet, but he's showing a hell of a lot of promise for next year, maybe the year after. Plus, Jagr and Giroux are looking insane together (Jagr actually compared Giroux to Mario Lemieux the other day). I think the Flyers are in a much better position right now than they were at this time last year.

(P.S. Sorry if that first part came off a bit strong, but I get my Flyers info from my brother, who works on the side as a sportswriter and he gets a lot of information before it goes public/that doesn't go public, so I'm not entirely sure how much of the Richards and Carter/Richards and Pronger stuff actually ended up leaking through to the press, so I figured I'd make note of that.)

Honestly, Simmonds was one of my favorite players when he was on the Kings, I really cannot believe that they traded him!

And that who banana thing... wow... just wow.

So after seeing a few games for the Pens I have to say that I am really excited this season. Malkin has not looked this good since the 2008-2009 season, and both Flower and Johnny are looking super good in net. I haven't seen Letang pop like I know he can though, but I am hoping that once the actual season starts that will change. But yeah, very hopeful.

Feels a little rigid and plain? The old one feeds off on that classic look of course, but I like the colors of it. Not so metallic. All Oilers style.

Yeah, the banana thing was just disgusting. The guy who threw it made a statement through his lawyer claiming that he didn't realize it could be construed as racist, and was just throwing it to distract Simmonds so that the Red Wings would win...but why on earth would he have brought a banana to a hockey game?

And I've been pretty busy lately so I haven't been able to keep too much of an eye on it, but has Crosby played yet/is he close to being cleared to play?

He is on IR, and there is a good chance he will play this season, but they are not setting any date for his return.

And yeah... I also don't buy that he just happened to have a banana. Loser.

So... the videos explaining the suspensions are awesome. And today there is one detailing Clean Hits. Very nice.

Awesome first night and day of action. Kings and Flyers, my two teams, both won. Suffice to say, I am pleased.

I'm also now hearing rumors that Mike Richards and Jeff Carter were both involved in some kind of drug use, which attributed in part to the big off-season trades. I'm not sure what to believe with this anymore.

Tough opener for the Jets...that must suck, not having a team in your city for 15 years and then losing 5-1 in their first game back haha. Good for the fans, though. They were still on their feet and cheering and stuff, even with their team down by four goals with like a minute left.
