So, I was going to make a big post calling out votes to be cast for Game of the Year. But due to activity; I decided to keep it simple.

What is your Game of the Year for you?

To be honest. I have three:

3rd Place:

Portal 2 was a blessing to me. I remember camping out at Gamestop launch night and I was the -only- one there for Portal 2. Everyone else was getting Mortal Combat.

Portal 2 is a FPS puzzle game that forces you to think with portals. With a hilarious storytelling, a very neat looking engine, and incredibly good puzzles. Even after you beat the game you will want to come back for more. Even Multiplayer is fun for a spell or two.

Did I mention that this game is hilarious? Because it is.

2nd Place:

Saints Row the Third snuck up on me honestly. What started as a free game ended up in amazement on how fun this game is. Sure, this game knows it does not take itself seriously. Sure, it's crazy as shit, and sure. It's incredibly unrealistic. But that's one of the main reasons why this game is so much fun. It's one giant sandbox and if you really want to have fun. Beat the game, and then go on a rampage. The weapons you get from this game is bonkers, and the DLC that is going to be coming out down the road is sure to be even more insane.

1st Place

Skyrim is just...perfect. Words can not explain how amazing this game is. Bethesda did an AMAZING job with this game. Do whatever you want, whenever you want, and then some. Fight dragons, become a vampire, become a wherewolf, DO ALL THREE!

The storytelling is amazing. The music is amazing. Gameplay is amazing. Graphics are amazing. Just about everything about this game is just. AMAZING.

I can't really put into words on how good this game is. I spent well over 100 hours in this game so far and I have not even explored 50% of the content this game has to offer. Not to mention the replayability with choosing professions, metagame stuff (Like factions or being a good or bad guy), and even going through this game in different orders!

The only drawback to this game is, of course, the glitches. Played the PC version and yes, it exists, and yes, it's a small price to pay to get into the fun zone. But it's nothing too major as say. Fallout 3 or the earlier Bethesda games.

I honestly haven't played any new games this year that wowed me enough to call them the game of the year. This includes Skyrim.

Well... maybe there's one. Dark Souls. It's been described far more eloquently than I could elsewhere, but between the brutally hard yet always fair gameplay and the absolutely beautiful scenery, I can't really find any faults.

I just can't play it too much at a time because I suck

Well to be honest. If I were to have a 4th place. Dark Souls would be it.

That game rules pretty hard. And by hard. I mean that game is fucking HARD!

But once you own the bosses. It feels incredibly good!

Number one for me is definitely Skyrim, hands down. The amount of content in this game is ridiculous, tons of quests that keep track of the places that you've explored so they send you to different dungeons nearly every time, the combat is incredibly fun and customizable, the mod community is booming with hundreds of new things being churned out daily, and it runs better with every single patch! I've dropped a hundred hours into this one already and I'm STILL playing it, not finishing any of the main quests at all!

Number two would probably be Minecraft, as it has officially had its full release this year. I've dropped more hours into this than Skyrim since I've started playing. Countless hours of mining different materials and even more simply building anything I can imagine with them! This all gets better for the creative type with Creative Mode, in which you don't take damage, you can fly, and have every block at your disposal to make whatever your heart desires!

Number three is Terraria. Again, dumped a ton of hours into this one. It's similar to Minecraft, in which you mine and gather but differs in the fact that it focuses primarily on combat. With every update, they release tons of new materials, weapons, armour, enemies and bosses, music, zones, and loads of other surprises! It's not the game by itself nearly as much as the updates keeping it fresh and new every time I play it!

I picked up a few games recently, Saints Row 3 was one of them so it could definitely make the list...

I can't think of very many though, for now I'll just say Skyrim and the new Deus Ex. But I can definitely say I like New Vegas more than Skyrim, and wouldn't even compare DXHR to the original Deus Ex.

Honestly I actually made a notepad file of games I beat in 2011, this might help:

Tactics Ogre (SNES)
Ecco the Dolphin CD
Sonic CD (Japanese)
Sonic CD (US)*
Sonic & Knuckles (GEN)*
Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (GBC)
Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (GBC)
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (GBC)
Blaster Master (NES)*
Fallout New Vegas (PC)
Duke Nukem Forever (PC)
Sonic the Hedgehog (SMS)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (SMS)
Shatterhand (NES)
Final Fantasy IV (PSP)
Thunder Force III (GEN)
Thunder Spirits (SNES)*
Final Fantasy II (PSP)
Final Fantasy V (GBA)
Final Fantasy III (NES)
Metroid (NES)*
Soul Blazer (SNES)
Deus Ex Human Revolution (360)
Illusion of Gaia (SNES)
Alcahest (SNES)
Deus Ex Invisible War (PC)
Megaman Zero (GBA)
Megaman Zero 2 (GBA)
Megaman Zero 3 (GBA)
Megaman Zero 4 (GBA)
Megaman Xtreme (GBC)
Megaman Xtreme 2 (GBC)
Megaman V (GB)
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl (PC)
Rage (360)
Portal 2 (PC)
Portal (PC)*

* = replay

Tactics Ogre is probably the best SRPG I've ever played.

Zelda Oracle of Seasons was a real highlight. It was my first time beating LA DX, but I've beaten the original like 20 times and it's still one of my top favorite Zelda's.

Stalker blew me away.

Final Fantasy V is probably tied with FFIV and FFVI for me now that I finally finished it this past year, the superior GBA version (better translation and everything). And yes, I don't joke. I loved FFV and think it has the best gameplay out of ... all the FF's? It was challenging and overall I think it rivals FFIV and FFVI. They're all excellent for different reasons though.

Portal 2 was top notch. I thought I remember the first game being harder and longer, but after beating Portal 2 I replayed it and finished it in an hour. lol, Portal 2 was way better.

What even came out this year? Will try best to make a list!!

Haven't played it yet but Skyward Sword, haven't played but Shadows of the Damned, Vanquish, Gears 3? I guess?!

Out of things I played in general, those four plus Yakuza 4. Yakuza 4 was bosstown.

I'll probably pickup Skyward Sword in February when Xenoblade drops, definitely picking up a Wii then. Wiiners.

EDIT: Wait, I guess Xenoblade drops in April. No idea why I kept thinking February... well, whenever I get a Wii again for that is when I'll get Zelda! And some other stuff, I still need to play Galaxy 2, NSMB Wii, and Donkey Kong Country Returns (played a lot at a friends, definitely epic stuff).

It's toss up between LA Noire and Yakuza 4 with a slight edge to Yakuza 4. I have a few games from 2011 that I haven't played yet so my pick might change.

As a nintendo/Zelda nut these are my top three

#3 Super Mario 3D Land

Why? Because it freakin rocks! It's one of the best side scroller/3D games out there for me. First of all. This is one of the newest Marios you can do a SPEED RUN with because it's really short like Mario 3(We've all seen the speed run) and it takes about 10 minutes to make it through each world with out getting all three coins.

The Tanuki Tail is back too. =P Plus it's so easy to get 1 Ups in this game too.

Nintendo also introduced the Invincibility Leaf. If you died 5 times in one level you get the white Tanooki Suit as Mario (not Luigi). It's a Tanooki Leaf only it acts as a star til the end of the level. How cool is that? So you can beat the game with out all the aggravation.

#2 Zelda 64 3D
Who can't love this game... The graphics are better and there's GLASSESLESS 3D!! I love that

#1 Zelda Skyward Sword

I got this for Christmas. You start with SIX HEARTS because it's TWICE AS HARD!! They incorporated all Zelda's into this. In fact it's a prequel to all the other Zelda's. Which is weird in fact. Anyway I love the game play and the Wii Motion Plus will react right when you want it to. It's great. The game rocks. It's a wonderful addition to the saga.

No that's not Vaati if you have played the GBA and GBC games. Gannondorf or Gannon is not even mentioned in this game.

And they made Zelda more capable too!!! Squeee... She's not just some random damsel in distress.

It's too bad the producer of these games can't finish The Legend of Zelda though.

In Feb I will be picking up Xenoblade and Tales of the Abyss for 3DS.

OBJECTION!

Vaati isn't in the GBC games, that's Veran and Onox. Who later get hijacked by Ganon anyway.

I still wasn't too thrilled with Skyward Sword's required use of motion controls, but they're not horrible, and Ocarina of Time is disqualified for me because it's a remake (damn good one, but still a remake - same reason Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy is out)

SM3DL, though, I'm with you on.

I can't really choose anything else Astrophel... I mean I haven't really played anything else that is new. I got to sample Skyrim with a friend of mine but Eric and I are debating on getting it for PC. Only problem is. If we DO buy it on Steam I'm going to have to restore my laptop and what not so that I can get my computer back to optimal running.

I don't care that you call OoT3D Game of the Year, it just fails my arbitrary requirements.

And as illustrated with my previous posts, I'm pretty damn picky about what I'd call a GotY - only Dark Souls and SM3DL might deserve the nomination to me, and I'm not even considering Skyrim for the title (good, just not GotY material).

I've spent most of the year playing older games and Minecraft and Terraria. Minecraft went through a series of shitty updates in the leadup to the official 1.0 release that ruled it out for me, but Terraria may deserve a nod.

How would you compare Dark Souls to Demon Souls? I need to pickup both for sure sometime.

I couldn't really get into Demon's Souls, tbh. The way the world was seperated into distinct levels just didn't sit right with me, because of how they were accessed.

No, I'm not a fan of the "hub level" system.

Additionally, the Estus Flasks are much more forgiving than the need to purchase healing items in Demon's Souls (Flasks refill at campfires). Despite being ostensibly harder than Demon's Souls, a lot of the minor changes make things much more forgiving.

Like how you don't lose 50% of your health for dying. (unless it's a Curse attack, then you're going to have some problems)

The bosses still kill me to death, though.

Honestly I played a bit of Demon Souls and didn't like that aspect either. So Dark Souls is setup differently?

Skyrim gets my vote... I don't think I really played anything else that came out in 2011... *thinks*

Oh, right, Portal 2... yes, that gets my #2 pick.
