Screw it, I'll just post my definition essay for my writing class. At least it's SOMETHING, right?

Artificial Intelligence

Many futuristic science fiction novels and movies have mentioned some form of artificial intelligence, or AI. Some AI are disembodied supercomputers without emotion, built to make human decisions at speeds which can only be accomplished by a processor manufactured to be more efficient than a brain, while others are given a body and are created to fight wars or for pleasure. When these androids learn more about themselves and the world in which they live, they can form sentience. The line between human and machine can quickly become blurred when an AI becomes self-aware.

While not exactly utilized presently in daily life, artificial intelligence has stepped out of science fiction and in to reality. A website is dedicated to running a chat service where you type to a curious AI, named Cleverbot, who responds a user’s inquiries. How Cleverbot operates is by asking questions and storing the users’ answers within its memory. One interesting response this author has received was by asking, “What do you know of artificial intelligence?” to which it responded, “You are an artificial intelligence”. The answer was unexpected and definitely puzzling, yet this author had come to the conclusion that humans learn in a similar fashion as this AI. People ask multiple questions about things they do not know and use the information they gather to grow intellectually.

An example of a fictional AI would be the T-101, also known as The Terminator. This cybernetic organism was created by a self-aware supercomputer known as Skynet to eliminate militaristic threats. In Terminator 2, a T-101 is reprogrammed by John Connor to protect and befriend his younger self. This particular cyborg had few social skills and still retained most of its violent tendencies, left over from Skynet’s original programming. The younger version of Connor teaches this machine that it is, “[not good to] go around killing people”, to which it obeys. Connor urges the T-101 to listen to, “the way that people talk”, teaching it various swear words and that the phrase “no problemo” is more natural than saying “affirmative”. By the end of the film, the T-101 has learned why people cry and how it is something that it can never do. A moral is presented in the ending sequence, “Because if a machine, a Terminator, can learn the value of human life, maybe we can too”, which leads to pondering whether the T-101 was in fact more human than actual people and that they could learn about being human from a machine.

Intellect can be a powerful tool or a horrible monster depending on how it is used. Most of history’s most revered and reviled people were very intelligent, such as Nikola Tesla and Adolf Hitler. While Tesla was a brilliant inventor who had created many things hundreds of years before their modernization, Hitler was a politician and tactician that had brought Nazi Germany close to conquering and killing most of Europe. An AI constructed with the knowledge of both of these men would be a very dangerous weapon, as it would likely be able to carry out the will of both men at the same time at a greater speed and without the any moral bias to hinder it, launching a nuclear strike without any care of repercussion. On the contrary, it could possibly learn to value human life, such as the T-101, and face an extreme moral dilemma when confronted with destruction.

One key difference that separates humans from artificial intelligence is that an AI is created by humans, with a basic form of intelligence to perform a designated task, while humans are created at conception and are born with an unformed intellect and must create their own identities over the course of their lives. Apart from the ways that they are created, humans and AI are very similar, especially in the ways that they learn and adapt. While the most advanced modern AI are still very basic compared to the human mind, the androids from science fiction are not a technology that is in the distant future.

In a relatively short time from now, the human race may walk alongside sentient androids of some manner. If they learn, act, and feel the way that we do, there would be very little difference between living and artificial sentient beings. The ethics of whether or not an android is eligible for presidency or whether a cyborg has the same rights as a person will one day be debated issues. It could be tomorrow or a thousand years before Cleverbot obtains a body and argues that it is the humans that are artificial, but the fact is that whether it is artificial or not, intelligence is still intelligence and we have much more in common with machines than we think.

Once there was a mod named Elara. She wanted to have a story contest, but no one entered it in the end, and this made her sad. To improve her mood, she wrote her own super short story and entered it in via the original thread since it would be a waste to make a new thread for it. Because she was the only entry, she won by default. The end.

I win, bitches!!!

Bitmap, if such a photo appears I will have to harm you.

Don't worry. As much as I would not mind caretaking me posting pictures of myself in an artistically nude way. I just don't think you guys would appreciate it's intended value.
