Before I start, I'm aware of the poor grammar in the title. It shall be fixed... someday.

Anyway, since we've got a thread for the History Geeks, figured we could also include one for talking about things we're into in the scientific fields. Perhaps things we've seen or read lately.

It's a pretty open forum. Feel free to post your science macros, jokes, and so on.

Went to NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab yesterday. So cool. Got to visit Mission Control, fabrication, the Space Craft Assembly clean room, see some of the robots, and a few working Mars Rover prototypes and replicas.

They're really excited about the new rover, Curiosity, landing on Mars in a couple months.

Two men walk into a bar. The first one tells the bartender, "I'll have an H2O."

The second man thought that sounded good so he said, "I'll have an H2O too."

THE SECOND MAN DIED.

It's funny how much I've always been fascinated with astronomy, space travel, robotics, and things like that... always hated science in school though, haha. Guess it's different though.

Isn't NASA no longer government funded now though or something?

They're a branch of the government, but they had to retire the shuttle program. Their funding's not what it used to be, sure, but they're still government-backed.

And you'd think that guy would realize the difference in taste from peroxide and water.

It's been a pretty geeky week for me, science wise. Watched the Venus transit, visited JPL, and watched the grunion run.

Here in California, we have a species of fish that wash themselves on shore on some of our beaches in the middle of the night to spawn during certain nights of the year. The female burrows into the sand to lay her eggs and the males wrap around her and squirt the milt (semen) all over her.

ORGY IN PROGRESS

The spoogy aftermath. That's my foot next to a female up to her gills in milt. Just happened to look down and she was next to me.

I want to go to JPL open house!

I was actually just discussing with one of my professors one of my big regrets is not taking advantage of my dad's old job when he worked at the Space Division plant for Rockwell (later Boeing). I had stickers from every Shuttle mission and I either tossed them, stuck them on my toybox, or lost them. I only toured the plant once, and only saw one Shuttle roll out at Edward's AFB. I had opportunities others never had, and I squandered them.

Spent a good chunk of today watching a History Channel doc on Einstein. Fascinating life.

Like how he was trying to prove his special theory of relativity by camping in Russia to watch a total eclipse along with colleagues who were camping at another site in Russia so they would compare the stars' movements and see if it fit with the theory that the sun is warping space, but it just so happened that World War I had broken out and being Germans in Russia they were captured and held as POWs. Their camping experiment was sadly a failure.

So they're saying the Higgs Boson particle has been discovered. Thoughts?

Here's a joke I heard today:

The Higgs boson particle walks into a Catholic church.

The priest says, "I'm sorry, but we don't allow the Higgs boson particle here."

The Higgs boson answers, "But without me you can't have mass."

Heh.

I'm still just so proud the director of DARPA was the keynote speaker at my college gradation last year. Fucking awesome.

That is rather awesome. On a side note, I can't even remember who my keynote speaker was at my graduation... is that sad?

So the USS Endeavor is going to be flying all over Southern California tomorrow morning and I'd like to watch it before it lands at LAX and then starts its journey toward the ScienCenter, but I lack a car. Eh.. oh well.

Anyway, here's a joke:

Saw this fly by my bedroom window on its way to do a flyover Disneyland.

And then it flew by again later, doing a U-turn over the next neighborhood north.

Here ya go.

And for no reason at all, here's a couple of sharks eatin' some fish:
