Dark Slaya! Come on dooooooown!!
All right, mysterious admin who always seems to know when to show up and how to fix everything that goes wrong around here, tell us about yourself. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
All right, let's do this.
Let's go from the online part of me first, since that's what most of you have known me from. I've been messing around on the internet for a good 10 years now. I was around 12 at the time, and I'll admit I was bad at this whole internet thing. I used to creep around online chats (a particular one was CaraMail, which was all about French chatrooms). Popular thing to do was pretend to be an [hot / horny / handsome] [18-25yo] [girl/guy] looking to trade nudes of themselves. Of course, you'd mostly get the five same old recycled nudes. But as a 12 year old, nudes were nudes. At the same time, I was really into whatever anime was playing on TV (French dubs mostly. My English at the time was bad. To think that I now work at a mainly English speaking place). So yeah, anime. The first thing I really watched (aside from DBZ) was Card Captor Sakura. Oddly enough, the French dub for that show was decent, as it wasn't based on the crappy excuse that the English one was, but on the original japanese version. The logical thing I did as a young teenager? Look for porn of that shit. And I did find it (got into hentai from that). I also looked for other kind of porns (i.e: 12yo looking for naked 12yo). Obviously, at that age you're not aware that it is illegal or that child porn is even a thing. Hell, you think it's even logical. You can begin to see a pattern: horny kid and lots of porn. Spoiler: that last part is not changing. Hentai eventually lead me to an Acmlmboard started by ScribbleKid (spelling might be wrong, it has been a while). I don't remember the exact name of the board. That then lead me to another Acmlmboard that was called Soulangel (I think that Xeo is also familiar with that one). I stayed there for a while, doing tons of spammy posts because post count was everything to me. For reasons I can't remember for the life of me, that board closed. I transitioned to Acmlm's Board (I2) where I was active for quite a while. That's also were I learned that spam was bad. Somewhere along the road, I became interested in having an Acmlmboard. So I got a copy, learned some PHP and messed around on free hosts. Free hosts, obviously suck. So that never really got anywhere. At some point, I became active in the Acmlmboard Programming section of Acmlm's Board and I was made a moderator some time after. At that point I helped out a few people set up their stuff. At around the same time I was also an admin on a website called Sharingan (.net), that distributed anime. I was in charge in some part of programming. I'll have to admit that this particular task was my greatest failure as a programmer. I was VERY bad and if someone that used to be part of the staff there comes across this, I have to say I'm very sorry. However, that failure made me realize that I was terrible (I became better, though) Near those times, though, I came in contact with Xeogred. Apparently that was in 2004, at a time where I was pretending to be 18 (fun fact: I was 14). I was modded because I needed to test a few things on Xeogaming. Later on, I was made an admin for the very same reasons. Somehow, it stayed that way until now. Fast forward a few years and some getting fed up with the previous host and his version of Acmlmboard. It's not working out. The board is unmaintainable. I come up with a crazy idea: we'll transition the board to plain old regular Acmlmboard 1.92. And it was crazy. It wasn't easy. In fact, some bugs from that time still appear once in a while. Not only that, but that change also brought a change to a new host, a choice that I do not regret at all. [Note: the above is a bit iffy. I do not remember if we had something in between that host and myself. The copyright at the bottom of the board, 2006, suggests that I had no way of paying for an host at the same. But I think that the transition to the official codebase and the host change were made roughly at the same time. I really don't know. I'm not well known for my great memory, after all. DreamHost says I have been buying from them since late 2007. Oh well.] From there, I've been drifting in and out, as life got more serious. So, let's talk about that, that whole non-internet part of life. As a kid I used to be pretty darn active and play outside a lot (the only gaming I did was on a Gameboy, and that was rare. Until Pokemon, anyway.). Not much to say about that. From birth to around 9yo, I was a pretty normal kid (if only somewhat good at school). When I was 9 years old, my father died. My mother went into depression and life was pretty dark. We ended up moving shortly after that. We lived closer to my mother's friends, so that helped her. In turn, that helped my (older) sister and I. Somewhat. I was young, so I didn't understand a good amount of things that were going on. I can only speak of them as an adult that's trying to make sense of what a 9 to 12 years old kid was seeing. The moving wasn't all rainbows and other misc. positive stuff. It also meant new school for me. Took me forever to settle in. I did get along well with some girls, so at least I had that going for me. That was in 2001 I think. I do remember that 9/11 happened around that time. Most of my time from late elementary school to a few years of high school was spent either: playing video games with friends -or- doing stuff on the internet. I don't want to too in-depth for the gaming part, it's rather boring. The internet, as you can guess, somewhat shaped me as I became more and more interested in computers. The internet also helped me find out more about music and got me into metal. Some fun fact: it was Xeo that got me into power metal, with two Edguy songs. I don't think either of us knew the names of the songs at the time, so I looked for them (for those interested, the songs were "Golden Dawn" and "Vain Glory Opera"). So cheers to that guy from the internet for whom I'm still admnining =P From then, I never looked back on metal. It's part of who I am, much more than video games. Let's skip a bunch of stuff that I can't remember correctly and go to more recent times. In last 2007, I got my first job as wrapper (read: bitchwork dude) in a Grocery store. Fun fact: tomorrow is my final day there. At the same time, I got into CEGEP in Natural Sciences. [Editor note: In Quebec, high school is a bit shorter than in the US. CEGEP is not mandatorry and is like the final year of high school in other provinces + one/two extra. You need to go to CEGEP to get into universities)] That lasted two years, then I got a (worthless) diploma. Seriously, that diploma basically says "There, you can go do worthwhile stuff in University now". A few months before that, though, I chose what I would major in... from what some guy in my classes mentionned. He said he would probably go into Computer Engineering. I was interested and also applied for that. [Fun fact: I got a response for that very quickly. So quickly that I thought I was not accepted. Turns out I was wrong] So, in 2009, I got began my major in Computer Engineering. It's not easy (I managed to fail all my courses in a certain semester), but I'm nearly done. However, while I'm currently considered a full time student, I'm an intern for the next 6 months. The pay is good and I'm working in aerospace, which has tons of stuff I can learn from. So, you can say that the work I've been doing on this board for some years, as well as the hosting, has been been paying off, in one way or another. If anything needs clarification, feel free to ask. I didn't expect to write this much, which means I went kinda all over the place.

The length is good. Fun, though useless piece of info about me: I used to be pretend to be 22yo when I was 13/14. No one ever suspected that I wasn't.
But this isn't about me. Glad to see someone saying their time here wasn't entirely useless. Have you ever traveled outside of Quebec? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
I haven't been outside of Quebec in quite a while, actually. My last time was about ten years ago to visit some relatives in New Brunswick. I don't remember much about this, except I ate the biggest pizza of my life. Sadly, said pizza had tons of onions on it, which I dislike greatly at the time (I got better. Cooked onions still suck)
The other time was during a family trip to Niagara Falls. I was young, so what I remember the most was the time we spent at Marine Land. It was fantastic and I would very much like to go again. Sadly, my memories of that place are a bit overshadowed by something: I got lost in a store while over there. I was very young and I was basically 10 hours from home. That, and the place is mostly English speaking while I only spoke French at the time. However, I'm someone that learns from their mistakes; I'm now very good with directions and pretty much never get lost (granted, smartphones do help with that nowadays). Now, I don't travel. There are a few reasons why: 1- I hate the actual transit part 1.1 Quebec is a construction hell, where highways are a bitch to travel on. 1.2 Fuck trafic jams 2- Not interested in most places. I don't care about travelling to hotter places (i.e: lots of beaches) and I'm not patient enough to visit historical places. However, I do want to go a few places in Europe. I also want to visit Scandinavia (because metal). Aside from that, I am open to the idea of travelling out of Quebec for work. That's something I was prepared for when I got into engineering.

You've managed to come up with a lot of programming we don't see very often on other board (YouTube tags, etc). How did you learn to code a lot of these things?
|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
[Sorry about my responses being so late. I've been rather tired recently]
Thanks for the compliment. I particularly think that my programming skills are rather lacking. However, most of the web related stuff I've done in the past was learned on the spot. When I got my first Acmlmboard, I've looked at it and experimented. With some help from the PHP online manual, I managed to do something that "worked". And then when stuff got really bad (hacking and the like), I've asked Xkeeper what was his fix. And I learned from that too. And that's my style. Tutorials don't sit well with me. They teach me to build things step-by-step, while I'd rather figure out to build said thing, maybe destroy it a few times or do things out of order. As I said earlier, I'm someone who learns a lot from his mistake. I don't like doing mistakes, hence I tend to make sure that when I don't do something right, it only happens once. Also, in two years or so (cursed internship getting in the way), I'll be majoring in Computer Engineering so I'll say that school somewhat helped. Discussing with other students about programming and related subjects tend to make you learn new stuff, and classes kind of help. A shorter answer to your question, though, would be that Acmlmboards are written in a very "all over the place" style. Lots of things don't make sense (it IS old) and to maintain it or add features, you tend to need very "hacky" solutions (unless you want to rewrite large parts of it). Those hacky solutions make you think out of the box or, at the very least, think for a bit. Nowadays, I try to pick up larger personal projects to get better (e.g: write emulators, work on an android kernel). Practice doesn't make perfect, but it sure as hell does make you good.

It's all good.
Tell me about your life's aspirations. And I mean, career-wise and outside of that. What do you want to do before you die? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Short term, I would very much like to get my Master's degree in Computer Engineering (probably something to do with computer security, if possible). Afterwards, I'd like to either go full PhD or get a Minor in something else. That or get a degree in admin stuff (perhaps an MBA or the like).
The last part ties into my long term goals. Ideally, I'd like to get some work experience in engineering (and get the real engineer title) and then build my own company. Might not be easy, but that's why most of my time off is dedicated to that. Other goals include getting my own house ASAP. I'd also like to be get very darn fit so that when I get older, I remain badass. [Warning: side story ahead] Aside from that, I'm working on my (lack of) love life. Turns out that this has been making my life pretty shitty for the past few days (tl;dr for that is: quit my part-time job of five years last week. Say goodbye to former co-workers including girl I kinda like. Meet said girl outside of work about 30 minutes later, say goodbye again. Realize that "like" is more like "love").

How do you know it's love? Tell me about her, if you don't mind.
|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
I'm getting way out of my comfort zone, so this might be a little more incoherent than usual.
How I know.... it's a bit difficult to answer. Heck, my feelings might change tomorrow. Working non-stop makes it a bit difficult to sort things out. Anyhow, right now my best answer is that after the second goodbye, I realized that it was possible that I wouldn't meet this girl ever again. More than all the goodbyes I've said that day combined, this particular one made my heart sink. I don't cry ever but this might've been the closest I've been to since I was a little kid. Then my week has been bad as I couldn't get this girl out of mind. Combine with "I might not see her again", and that makes for a pretty bad week emotionally. As I said, to might be a bit worse than it should be due to me being tired, that's why I'm sorting things out tomorrow. This also means that I might act on it. Who knows. I can afford to open myself to one person. I still get to loathe about 7 billion people. As for how she is. First of all, she's younger than me by a few years (it wouldn't be even close to being something illegal, but apparently people like being offended at everything ever). Physically, I'd say she's pretty. I wouldn't call her smoking hot. But she's the kind of girl that always looks great and doesn't need any heavy makeup. As far as personality goes, I don't know her well enough to describe her in general. I just know that whenever we talk, my mood gets better. So yeah. *Kard Ayals is in confused land.

That's really sweet. I really think you should contact her. Go by your old work and talk to her.
Don't mean to boss ya. It's your life, your call. What is it about metal that makes it your favorite genre over all others? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
I personally think that metal is the most vast genre in music. If I get tired of one sub-genre (say: power metal) I go towards something else. It's also a genre that gives off a lot of energy, when needed. I can always find a song that willll get me all primed up in the morning. At the same time, you can get those softer songs for when you just want to relax. Lots of metal bands just have musicians that take inspiration from tons of other genres. That's another thing I like.
And then, there are tons of bands that always strive to push the boundaries or to create something new, with no regards to what the fans think. For example, Opeth is a band that has done everything from generic death metal to albums with no distorted guitar or even stuff that's more on the jazz fusion side. I also like the technical side. I naturally appreciate the technical side of most of my interests, and music is no exception (hence my love for both classical guitar and piano. The players are amazing). So there's always that. Lastly, metal concerts are hard to beat. Like, very fucking hard. You even get stuff like Hellstorm, where people dress as pirates to see them. MOTHA FUCKIN' PIRATES. I don't think there's any argument against that (there are also vikings)

I'm severely lacking in the social aspect of life. I don't like most people IRL so whenever I need to communicate, things don't go so well. So, I'm trying to voice what I think instead of just keeping it because it might be harsh.
So yeah, I fear that my nature will leave me all alone in the future. Unsure if that's actually a bad thing, tho.

What's a story you could tell about yourself that you might end in saying, "Well, I was young and stupid then"?
|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
So if you recall, my father died when I was young.
What did I do afterwards? Steal stuff, being an asshole to everyone and did "pranks". Pranks meaning evil stuff like ruining postal boxes. That lasted for a while and really, thinking back on it, that really shaped up how I am today. I'm the polar opposite of what I was (learning from mistakes, once again). Really, that was a really shitty way to cope with death and now I'm generally good at managing my emotions (baring a few exceptions), at the risk of of being "cold" most of the time.

I went through a similar phase, actually. But the reasons for my sudden bouts of kleptomania were inexplicable.
Did you have any heroes growing up? Do you now? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Considering my outlook on people, I hardly have (had) any heroes. I am boring like that. However, I do have some people that I look up to for different reasons. For exemple, Bill Gates. Somehow, the guy can become rich as hell and maintain a down to earth attitude. Even better, he's been donating tons of time and money to causes that don't really touch him directly. That guy is awesome.
Aside from that, not that many people I can speak of in that manner.

Last question: If the zombie apocalypse actually happens, what type of survivor would you be?
|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
[Of all questions, I think this is the one that had me thinking the most... oops]
I'd probably be the calculator type. I mean, there are a lot of things to think about: supplies, weaponry, shelter. Supplies would be especially difficult to secure, as I think that's what most people would go for, first. Then, you need to think about the long term: how do you secure more food? I'd go loot a big garden or something. Weaponry would be hard to come by where I live (Canada), so there would need to be some creativity there. I'd try to find someone who can figure that part out. Then there's shelter. That part really depends on how the zombie infection works: is it instantaneous or is it delayed. That's important to know. If it's instantaneous, you can create a fortified shelter with a decent amount of people (that leads to other problems, as human interactions are not all that great). If it's not, I'd be weary of getting in a closed space with potential zombies. There's also the zombies themselves. What is their behavior? Are they attracted to a certain smell? Do they move towards noises? Both? Maybe they just move around randomly? Hell, maybe they are actually smart both need to move on instinct? How sturdy are they? Can they be killed easily? What kind of "weapon" is needed? Maybe they're weak to something stupid, like water (lol). But, really, I'd try to gather as much information as I possibly can (after gathering supplies). I'd try to figure out what the military is up to. If it goes in any way like movies or games, there might be a nuke headed my way. I'd rather not have that. So yeah, as a survivor, I'd be the one who forms a detailed plan. If a group needs to be formed, I probably wouldn't be the leader (but some people I know have told me that I can get the point across pretty well with my short speeches, so who knows) |
