You know what im talking about. All you gamers out there who play online games and discover spam in the text bar reading "PWNED". You look up and gander...
"How in the hell did that word get started"? Then you just shrug and continue to play on, ignoring almost every little kid on the microphone screaming (And terriably mispronouncing) "PWN" and "ZOMFG STEVE ROXORS THE BIG 1111!!!!!!!!" My simple question is this. Where in the hell did that actually come from? I looked in wikipedia (God I love that site) and countless of people posted "it may have been a raving typo that turned into an internet fad". To me its "Gay Xbox live shit that kids do countlessly in order to sound cool when theyre actually not" Do you use internet slang? Or are you the one on the other side shaking your head muttering "You are one stupid dumbass...." |

yeah I usually say the basic slang things in real life like "Roffelsarous" (Oppsed to ROFLSARUS) and "Roffelcopter" (ROFLCOPTER)...and heres something funny, instead of actually making an action, I usually just say it. Like if im speechless, i would say "Dot...dot...dot" meaning internet instant messenger of "...". And if say I would shrug, I wont do the action, I would just say "Shrugs"...
Too much internet I tell you... |

Easy. It started two ways. First, it started with AIM. People began slowly making typos, and allowing them. Soon, they progressed to not even using grammar. Next, it still took to long to type, so they began to use abbreviations for words, creating AIM speak.
Then there is 1337 speak. This started as a hacking language developed to created confusion. Then people started to use it in gaming and so it progressed from there to how it is now. Now, lets have a discussion on how the internet started... |

Originally posted by Vulkar Thank you. I couldn't have explained any simpler, really I couldn't. I more of a long-winded lecture yelling at you for being so stupid kind of person. It's true about the AIM speak, but it's more accurately referred as AOL speak since it started with AOL chat rooms, and not AIM instant messaging. Before AOL chat, there was (is) IRC, but with the introduction of AOL and its provision of internet to the masses, the degredation of language followed suit. "PWN" came about from a misspelling of "own" that stuck (notice the close proximity of the letter p to the letter o). Other words followed suit, and with the proliferation and hollywood-ization of hackers, a mutation of 1337-sp34k and AOL speak created the internet slang we have now. Toss in the mass hyping of gaming culture, and you've got the mindless babble that so few older adults understand. Just for clarity, most real hackers don't use 1337 speak anymore. Myself included. That's how we identify the posers, script kiddies, gamers, and wannabes. |

Originally posted by Sajin Gorotto That's what I say. Although I have to admit that I sometimes say PWN because to me it sounds.... good, I guess. However, I'll say it only to 2 of my cousins, of which I don't hang out with too often. I'll never use that stuff on the internet. Ever. It's just not me. And I can't really stand it when people use "R U". Don't know why I can't, it just became that way. It's even worse when your fiance does it sometimes. But I don't mind that really. |
