So, we've all been newbies on the internet at one time or another. Made mistakes, gotten banned, nearly spammed, all that. This thread is for you to tell us about such newbie days, what you did, how you acted, and when you started to shape up.
Back in my newbies days, I had a lot of fun. I joined a now deleted saite called danmattia.net. When I joined I became the most active member. It was about six months old, the most active member having around five hundred posts. I passed her, and reached the thousands in only a couple months. I was around thirteen when I joined. Nearly every post I made ther spammed, irritated members, made people hate me, ect. Then I got into a fight while in an RP thread, and won a huge fight. People sided with me for reasons of which I have absolutely no idea. That guy got banned in the end. So then, a couple months later, two of the staff emmbers resigned. Needing to fill the hole in staff, there was only one member that was trustworthy, not corrupt, and unlikely to flame. Me. The most unpopular member was staffed, then later banned twice, restaffed, and then made into a normal member. A couple months later I think was when I made the real leap into being a good poster. So how about you all? What did you all do as newbies, how did you do it, and how much did oyu enjoy it? |

WEll, On the old school MoD board I spammed a bit, was threatened to be banned because they thought I was making multiple accounts(I ws actually logging in a friends house, then having them make an account for the site. This is what brought on Cairoi and others.)
After the board became Xeogaming, I was a good little poster, active, not spamming too much, young and naive. I was a little irritable, became angry too quickly, that sort of thing. Responded with vindictiveness in the face of a disagreer or ignorance. Basically, I was a poor member for a little while. Got into a fight, an argument, and got a strike for it. Then I stepped up and now almost nothing fazes me or gets me explosively angry. So I kinda stepped it up a lot, now I'm staff. What a change I say, what a change. |

Originally posted by Vulcanlogic At least you're modest. As for me, I used to talk on a historical discussion forum, where generally, it was fun. People didn't make ad hominem or ad populem statements on the whole, and it was a nice community. And then I came to acmlmboard, and then here. Oh, I got perma-banned on some other board by cheveyo for bumping an old thread. |

My Internet n00b days are actually quite depressing and pathetic.
Started when I was 11, in 1997. Was excited about it because I could finally keep in contact with my friends who already had Internet and who started an "e-mail cult" to promote some form of exclusivity between them. Needless to say, I was an outcast of this and remained unaccepted even upon getting a web connection. I was a frequenter of chatrooms and lied about my age in order to be taken seriously in conversation (Hell, it's the Internet, nothing's meant to be taken seriously anyway). These were the days when people didn't worry about Internet predators and let's face it, it takes a certain amount of naivete to be believe that a 40-something-year-old man thinks you're special and treats you like an adult just because you're 13 and your parents don't understand you. Not to mock a serious crisis in our society or blame a victim, but this isn't someone forcing themselves into your house and putting a gun to your head. This is answering MySpace comments and AIMing, then scheduling a day and time to meet this person. Anyway, I came from a time when the Internet wasn't so daunting and kids went online to look up the times their cartoons came on among other things. Not to say that the time I started on the Internet was wholesome, far from it. When was the Internet ever wholesome? Probably never. But this thought train has completely derailed... When I first started on the Internet, aside from the chatrooms, I visited the occasional message board here or there, but I always lost track of them, not understanding how to bookmark or how I could return to sites I'd been to. So often enough, I was that anonymous person who came out of nowhere, bumped a thread with a snarky comment or answer to the question that was posed and disappeared just as quickly as I came. The rest of the time, I took to sites like Rotten.com and Bertisevil.com during their early hey days and was a charter member of RPGs like the Alien Adoption Agency and Elderwood when they still piggy-backed off other sites. At this same time, I was into fanfics, and Fanfiction.net was still allowing NC-17 fics. I was into writing and reading different ones and got to the point that I was critiquing more and more work and was considered a serious critic for a time under the pen name, Haunted Quill. On other sites, my pen name was Pythia or Madame Robinson. Now that's some nostalgia I haven't thought about in a while, and probably more than you wanted. |

My internet days started around 2000-2001 when I was getting into rom hacking and game editors and things like that. This was such a long time ago, Super Mario Bros. 3 Challenge was just new and being updated and whatnot (for those who remember that ...). But even then, I didn't get involved with anything aside from just downloading stuff from sites. Then in late 2002, I finally started to browse messageboards, specifically Challenge Games Community (the rom hacking site that was like my favorite site back in the day, now its no more) and it turned out to be an Acmlm Board. So after posting a few times, few weeks or months or whatever I saw Acmlm's Rom Hacking domain and thought it was cool. Laugh if you will be the boards to me back in the day felt like an RPG. I liked the stats, and all that and had fun looking at other posters. I felt like I was accomplishing something by posting back then. Sadly my life at Acmlm's didn't last long. A couple of my friends and I were working on a Halo fansite, and put up some phpBB forums. We wanted more traffic, so one day I decided to massively PM people over at Acmlm's (probably everyone on the first page of the memberlist) basically telling people to join our forums and post (this is obviously frowned upon), and it just so happened that Randy12345 was doing it too. We were both banned on the spot. I tried to get a few last words in and then saw a few people insult me, saying things like "Good riddance!" basically. At the time, this enraged me beyond words. So I re-registered more than a few times and continued to "try" and get some kind of point across. Again, I was completely new to the whole forum thing and barely knew what I was doing and getting into. I was permabanned from Acmlm's for about a year and half or so until the finally had to restart, and I was given another chance. Through this time is when I was active at many other boards, and held too many staff positions to be counted, and was co-owner of a few and I think Shaddows Edge might have even begun during this gap. So, by the time Acmlm's was restarted I had developed into Xeogred, and was far more mature and knowledgable about what I was doing. Now, most of the boards (a lot of Acmlm Board's) I used to post at are completely dead, and I had dropped my staff positions from all of them except for this place and Acmlm's. And yes, I've been staff at Acmlm's for awhile, from permabanned to moderator (although I'm barely active there thesedays). Just goes to say people do change. |

We were all so naive in those days. *sighs* At least my upbringing in the forum world was not as rough as others.
I was but a humble little Chocobo. OH SHIT! I totally forgot that I was Chocobo. on the MxO forums, my first official forum site. O.o Anyway, On MxO(Matrix Online) I basically flamed every idiot because it was fun and there were no moderators. It was insane, I would just insult every single person who posed the dumbass question "Can we play as Neo?" and owned them oldskool! |

Lol I dont think i was ever banned from MOD maybe once for being mean but it wasnt permenate. Now I was banned before that at the fourm that alot people switched over from to MOD I cant remember the name, i think it was actually Anime Fourms, i dunno Seto's forum for all of you who remember.
I remember I used to play spy alot on that fourm, talk to some people to see what they were up to then relay the info back to the Mods and Admin, I was such a little ninja probably responsible for 5-10 bans of other members lol. Oh well I left though and joined MOD and you guys probably remember me as Vash, Echelon, or Haku but yeah my ninja days are over now I could really give a rats ass about how you think about the Mods and Admin, even though we all know their nice people. :Huggles Moderators and X: |

Originally posted by Fooly Cooly Kirby*returns huggle* I joined ACMLMs a decent while back, that was my first board. How I found it was by silly chance. I was looking for mugshots of the MMX bosses (for a crappily done Sprite Comic), and a Google link brought me to their Avatar page. I joined, was pretty spammy, got banned during the "Staff is Back" saga, then joined NFF after being asked by VG. Then because of that, I also found here. Woo nelly. The ACMLM's junk was around the same time as when I first GOT my freakin' internet, so they're the same story. |
