The soft breeze brushed past Janice's face. She glanced at her watch. He was ten minutes late. She had arrived fifteen minutes early, so as not to miss him. She rubbed her palms together and breathed warm air onto her cold hands. Twelve minutes late.
She picked up her purse, which was rested against her seat. Rifling through it, she took out a small bottle, and popped three small white pills into her mouth. She took a a flask from her purse and washed the pills down with it. She tilted her head back and closed her eyes, letting the warmth of the vodka wash over her. She tried to remain still, but couldn't; the anticipation was too great. She smoothed out her dress and stood. She began to pace the empty football stadium. Eighteen minutes. She took a deep breath, cool air filling her lungs. How long had she been searching? Thirty years? Thirty-five? Forty? But now her search would be ended. She would be united with her son. It had been his fourth birthday and.... The sounds of the struggle echoed in her head. She had... and then they had.... A wave of nausea washed over her. She leaned against her cane to keep from falling. The ground seemed as if it was trying to escape from under her. She took quick, shallow breaths, her lungs screaming for oxygen. She clenched her eyes shut, forcing the world to stay still. She stood back up, all signs of the attack gone, when a burst of wind blew past her, scooping her flowered hat from her head. She grasped at it but it was beyond her reach. It floated towards the edge of the stadium, when a gloved hand shot out and grabbed it. Janice looked at the late arrival. He wore a black trench coat, with the collar turned up, and a black hat tilted down, hiding his face. But she knew who he was. She tentatively approached him, and flung herself into his arms. "Oh, Thomas, it's been too long." She looked deep into her husband's clear blue eyes. They had both aged in the decades since they had last parted ways, but there still was a connection. Thomas looked back at her coldly. He raised his arm and placed her hat back on her head, hesitated, then embraced his wife. "Yes, it has been far too long." "D-did you find him?" He released his grip on her and turned away. "Possibly, but--" He looked around the empty stadium. They seemed to be alone alone, save for the wind. "Come with me," He gestured towards a black car parked outside of the stadium, "I will explain on the way." "On the way where?" He responded to her question with a cold stare. She looked back into his eyes, trying to find something, anything, but his face was stern. "You always were a shady one, Thomas" He didn't react at all, but rather seemed to be carved of stone. "Fine, you win yet again, I will come with you." She began to walk down the stairs. Thomas lowered his arm and began to follow her. He cast one last look at the man leaning against the stands on the opposite side of the stadium before he whirled out. (Last edited by Jeeves the Pirate on 11-03-06 06:09 AM) |
