While I was at Barnes & Noble earlier tonight, this lady came over and sat with her son in the chair that was next to the shelf I was perusing, and she starts talking loudly to him about all sorts of things. After I had moved on to another area, her phone rang and, trying not to be rude in return, I tried not to eavesdrop which was hard since she was talking so loudly in a quiet place and everyone could hear it all anyway. It's quite difficult to avoid listening in and concentrate on something else when the one sound is persistently there.

So her conversation's relatively boring and continuing to sound more and more pretentious. Eventually, she starts talking about how hard she was partying on New Year's and then she dropped this interesting and awkward gem: "Ugh, I had gotten so drunk, I flashed my dad."

Why say that in public? Oh well.

Ah, AICN. They come up with the more interesting things to post about sometimes, among the drivel kiss-ass reviews and "Hey kids! A trailer for this so-so movie we want to see is going to be during this so-so movie we kinda want to see and you should buy a $10 ticket just to watch to trailers!" posts.

Yeah, that site's conflicting, but whatever.

But yeah, Norrin Radd's 'nads. Funny.

BUMP!!

Sure this belongs in Video Hut, but if you're into either the movie or the band, this video seems to make the experience better. Sure, the mouthing doesn't quite match, but it really wasn't supposed to in the first place it seems.

Flying Dutchman as the devil. Ha.

Just be cordial about it. Excuse yourself into the conversation and say, "Excuse me, but are you ... ?" if she isn't, don't sweat it. If she is, that's great. You can just add in the typical conversation starting questions for people you don't talk to that often:

"Wow! How are you? How've you been? You still talk to ... ? So how'd high school treat you? Your parents OK?"

just find any common ground you can think of and milk it for all its worth. Even if it comes out awkward, it could make for a funny story later.

I hear that. Did you try the joining a club method? Sometimes there aren't any great clubs out there, but there are still people to meet. Heck, join a service club and do some volunteer work. You meet some sweet girls in those clubs.

Good luck with the girl. Seriously, the worst thing that could happen is that she isn't whom you think, and even that can be a godsend--new friend!

I busted up when they did the "You're gonna gargle Mayonnaise" and there's a picture of a jar and Patrick, looking perfectly shocking and with the mouthing spot on says, "No!"

A lot of it really got me on the floor with this one, especially when he's gesturing at his crotch talking about his "horn" being blown off.

Really, saying the Pick of Destiny is an inferior album compared with the first one is like taking the soundtrack from Walk the Line and saying it's inferior Johnny Cash. While the self-titled album obviously tops the soundtrack, it's just that--a soundtrack.

And even still the movie's just a jumbled up version of their HBO show.

But still Beelzeboss fuckin' rocks it at 11.

Why yes this is a huge bump, but my post is relevant and also better than starting a new thread.

So it's the winter semester, what are you taking now?

My classes:
- College Algebra (the last class I need to transfer out)
- City Magazine staff class

Just need to fill out the paperwork and I should be out.

Since my dad's been sick lately, my mom's been turning her attentions to living it up more. Will probably spend some time in Europe in August once I'm done with LBCC.

Did Justin ever post here? He usually goes by English, but it isn't unheard of if he uses a different screen name.

The So Cal crowd is thinning.

Oh well, many of us are still here.

Heh, Wizards of the Coast are A-1 at servicing their following.

Seinfeld just ended. It was the episode that had Kramer suing the heiress to the Oh Henry candy bar fortune that was a big parody of the OJ trial.

Now it's the news. Some guy in the next town over shot this teenage boy who was trying to break into his house to steal his marijuana that he grows himself for "medicinal purposes." Right now they're showing the boy's crying family members who are upset that he had to die because some guy was fearing for his weed.

You know, forgetting that he was breaking and entering.

While my mom and I were waiting in line for the bathroom at the Getty Center (this uppity art museum in L.A. that's usually visited by pretentious people who like to drop as many names as they can in everything they say) yesterday, this older woman went up to another in a wheelchair and started to have this conversation:

Pretentious woman: "I like your scarf. It looks exactly like mine. Did you get yours in India too?"
Wheelchair woman: "Nope, T.J. Maxx. Made in India. Heh, we probably paid the same for it."
Pretentious woman: "Well, no, uh my husband gave me mine as a gift. Well uh, see you later."

In other words the woman was still trying to one-up the woman in the wheelchair by saying that at least she still got hers as a present and didn't sink to buying the exact same garment at a crappy department store for cheaper.

Meh, it's a lame story, but I despise pretentious people and it's unfortunately the type of people I'm always around hanging out at museums and theaters.

I'll have better stories soon.

Upon seeing the posters for this I was really excited about it and wanted to see it because museums are my heroin. Seriously, not just addicted; they're the kind of drug that you have to keep doing to keep from getting sick.

Anyway, I'm excited and all and then I discover that the leading man is Ben Stiller.

My interest was doused. Royally.

I don't know what it is about Ben Stiller, but it's the same things with Liv Tyler. I simply can't take them for very long and they tend to kill scenes (and sometimes whole movies) for me.

When I saw him guesting on "Extras," even though it was an act, it still hooked the exact way I see him:

Anyway, to quote myself ( ), I think I'll have to wait for DVD. Granted, I'm quite sure I'll be able to look past the surface value and love it.

Heh, I'm so lame.

I'm so stoked about this. When I saw the posters a few months ago, I'd gotten excited that it was coming.

The second one was definitely better than the first and they seem to just keep improving.

I would have liked them to face off with a different villain than Prince Charming, though. Fairy Godmother rocked it hardcore.

I'm currently in the middle of Sirena, this story about a mermaid falling in love with a marooned Greek soldier amid the Trojan War. I read it in middle school, but decided to re-read it because a friend was mentioning how into it she was and I realized I couldn't remember much of it or even exactly how it ended other than it was overly tragic.

In the way of manga and graphic novels, I recently was given the first four volumes of "Priest" and the latest volume of "Lady Snowblood."

Other books recently added to my pile:
Smoke and Mirrors (It's always been on my list, but it finally just arrived in the mail)
Enchanted
Road to Wellville (Also always been on the list)
Bloody Jack (Yeah, it's young adult, but I figured I'd see what the fuss was about)
Farewell to Manzanar

We'll see how quickly these get plowed through. I've been wanting to join a book club now.

Pretty much anything produced by Bruckheimer these days would be considered epic. Most epics these days are the grandiose costume action dramas like Lord of the Rings and Troy.

I'm amazed at what they put in Epic Movie and what they didn't. Really, that movie is destined to blow. It'll make a bunch of spoof scene and like Date Movie, it'll stop and explain to its mentally-incapacitated audience what it just made fun of.

So the rundown...

Epic:
- Lord of the Rings
- 300
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Troy
- Braveheart
- Gladiator
- Kingdom of Heaven
- Chronicles of Narnia
- Master and Commander
- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (and other flicks like Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Fearless, Musa the Warrior, Iron Monkey, etc)
- Zorro (This is where is starts to get hazy)
- Willow
- Conan the Barbarian
- Red Sonja

Borderline epic, but still leaning more epic:
- Indiana Jones
- Star Wars
- Terminator
- James Bond
- Battle Royale
- Harry Potter
- Mutiny on the Bounty
- Superhero movies

NOT epic:
- Borat
- Nacho Libre
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
- Paris Hilton in any sense of the word

I think this should be in the hazy area. I didn't find it epic at all. Except maybe the Kraken, but that's it. No massive battles, no dangerous stakes.

And while an epic should keep you on the edge of your seat, a lot of movies that aren't epic do the same thing.

The Matrix is a good example, it also had that battle in Zion.

I still push LotR as a perfect example of an epic. I had everything. In fact, it was so epic: they filmed it in even wider screen. That's right. Wide screen wasn't good enough for Peter Jackson, so they made it wider. And it totally works.

I think it also depends on the musical score. THAT is a very telling aspect of epic films. Klaus Baldet's score for Pirates (which seems to rip off Gladiator's since Klaus worked so closely with their composer for a while) has the essence of epic right along with Lord of the Rings and Master and Commander.

There really is a fine line between action and epic. Epic is grander and like I'd mentioned, it's one huge costume drama. You just know when something is epic. Epics also walk the fine line between action and fantasy. Things like Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Legend, and MirrorMask wouldn't be considered epic.

Simply put, and sorry to be circling around to this one again, epics stand at the crossroads of fantasy, action, adventure, and war movies. They simply are. You just know when a movie is an epic or not.

I'm completely amazed that LotR didn't make the cut for Epic Movie. It's the freakin' pinnacle. Much greater than Narnia, X-Men, and Pirates. Hell, even Star Wars doesn't make an appearance.

But Paris Hilton and Michael Jackson do? What. The. Fuck.

Also to add to my lists:

Epic:
Ben-Hur (at least for the chariot race)
Spartacus
The Ten Commandments
Zulu
The Last Samurai

Borderline:
The Mummy
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (along with many of Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns)
Rocky

Actually, why isn't this in Entertainment? Every time I've come into this thread it was though Last Posts, so I didn't even realize this was in General.

Silly Rogue Carmen.

I'd think that a situation becomes epic when it's an ultimate battle of good and evil, where even those on the dark side know they're evil and are damn proud of it.

Sure there are the fights where both side believe they're the good, but the greater the villain who has nothing but evil plans, the more epic it becomes.

Back to the movie discussion: they decided to use movies from the last 2 years because the people who make these flicks have no respect for their audience, and for good reason. People who get excited about these movies now don't tend to be up on movies older than 10 years old. And God forbid it should be in black and white.

How this Epic Movie will play out:

Willie Wonka will come on screen.

One of the main characters: Hey, you're from that movie with the Oompa Loompas!

Willie Wonka: Why yes!
