The force arrests Chewbacca
A Hollywood wookiee impersonator is accused of head-butting a tour guide. A witness: Superman.
By Andrew Blankstein and Bob Pool, Times Staff Writers
February 3, 2007

The buzz on Hollywood Boulevard on Friday was over the Chewbacca who police say crossed over to the dark side in front of hundreds of tourists at Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

LAPD officers arrested "Star Wars" street performer Frederick Evan Young, 44, of Los Angeles in his furry brown wookiee costume Thursday on a charge of misdemeanor battery for allegedly head-butting a tour guide who complained about Young's treatment of two visitors from Japan.

The incident — witnessed by Superman and other impersonators — is the latest clash outside the landmark cinema between visitors and performers dressed as movie and cartoon characters. They collect tips from tourists who pose for pictures and watch them perform in front of the theater, where generations of stars have placed their footprints in concrete.

Tourists have complained that some costumed characters turn abusive when they refuse to pay them to pose for pictures. Two years ago, actors dressed as superhero Mr. Incredible, Elmo the Muppet and the dark-hooded character from the movie "Scream" were arrested for aggressive begging. More recently, an actor portraying slasher movie favorite Freddie Krueger was taken into custody for allegedly stabbing another man, although no charges were filed.

Thursday's altercation comes as police and Hollywood officials are trying to rein in the colorful assortment of actors and wannabes who perform for crowds.

They acknowledge that the incident was a setback.

Authorities said it began when a Star Line Tours guide allegedly observed the Chewbacca character harassing two young girls from a rival Japanese tour company.

Guide Brian Sapir said that when he asked the performer not to touch the visitors, Young became angry.

"You could see in his eyes he was exploding beneath the mask," Sapir said Friday. "He yelled at me, 'Nobody tells this wookiee what to do!' "

After a security guard suggested that the 6-foot-5 Young take a walk down Hollywood Boulevard to cool off, he became more agitated, said Sapir, 32. "He threw off his mask and walked toward me and slammed his head into my forehead."

Other guards held Young for police. He was later released on $20,000 bail and is expected in court later this month, said Lt. Paul Vernon, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman.

A police source said that a Superman performer witnessed the altercation and was interviewed by police. Other street performers said that before police arrived Superman called producers from ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Show," which is taped across the boulevard from the theater, and a cameraman videotaped Young being led off by officers.

Neither Young nor his attorney could be reached for comment Friday.

Under city rules, street performers can't state a price or demand money to take a photo with them, Vernon said. "They only can ask for a donation. They also cannot touch or follow the tourists if they walk away."

Continuing disputes led to a "superhero summit" last year between authorities and about a dozen performers, which police said significantly reduced conflict on the boulevard. Street actors predicted Thursday's incident could lead to a formal city crackdown.

"People all over the world come to Hollywood looking for movie stars and film characters," said Councilman Eric Garcetti, who represents Hollywood. "These folks are our ambassadors. We expect the highest standards from them, which they generally uphold. I don't feel that individual incidents require new legislation but we do need to keep a watchful eye on the crown jewels of the city."

Garcetti said there are two kinds of street performers.

"There were the characters that wanted to have a code of conduct and ethics about interacting with tourists, which comprised the majority," the councilman said. "The second group of performers were renegades, who didn't want to abide by any rules and were the troublemakers."

Friday on the Walk of Fame, some street performers worried about the future.

"The city will do something eventually. Yesterday's incident probably shortened that time span," said Thomas Fox, wearing a pirate's suit reminiscent of Capt. Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean."

"Things like this happen around Chewbacca all the time. I saw him in a fight with a music vendor. They knocked over a baby stroller," Fox said.

Nearby, Chris Mitchell posed for tourists snapshots in a Darth Vader costume. Lifting his mask, he switched off the microphone device that gives his voice a deep, gravelly Darth Vader sound and said Chewbacca often had run-ins with other performers.

The whole thing has the creators of the "Star Wars" character shaking their heads.

"The street performer doesn't have any affiliation with Lucasfilm," said company spokeswoman Lynne Hale. "Nevertheless, we are disappointed that someone dressed as Chewbacca would behave in this way."

Never really cared about the Super Bowl or any major sporting events outside of the World Series (and even then not really any more).

Was invited to a lesbian Super Bowl party this year. Odd.

I'm going with the Bears, because Obama is my man:

Back in the day, when I did sort of dig the Spice Girls, I really liked Sporty because she stood out and wasn't so looks oriented.

She's the What's-Her-Face of the Spice Girls, in place of Teen Girl Squad.

I live near Los Angeles, Calif., (closer to Long Beach, or "Da LBC" as Snoop calls it) and we've got a pretty wide variety of local bands and artists.

Was at a show last night that my boyfriend's band played with a few other rock bands (some edging on ska minus the brass section). His band sounds more metal, but they seem to get booked with all sorts. The gig they played last week was them and six punk bands. And before that was them with a couple new wave and techno bands.

Anyway, whatever scene you might be into, there's a lot of it here.

I think what makes me laugh so hard about that commercial is the fact that he's a presidental hopeful and he's blurting something reminiscent of Carlos Mencia's "Dee dee dee" bit to make fun of stupid people.

Not that I think Obama's stupid--far from it, heck that "Dundundundunnn!!" thing is a much better line than Bush's "Stay the course" --but it just reminded me of it.

He's so down with the people.

Not really related, but this morning there was this bit on the news about three Hispanic girls being beaten up by a group of black teenagers and there was all this debate from both sides about about hate crimes, racial profiling, and wrongfully accusing and it got pretty harry. Then the news anchor (Good Day L.A.'s Steve Edwards) interrupted everyone, mid thought, to ask them what they thought of the Super Bowl. Then he starts going on about this being Indiana's first win in a long time.

Heh, Good Day L.A. always has a bunch of dunces running things with their biggest idiots in front of the camera.

Vanilla Ice did eventually give Queen and Bowie writing credits, but after people kicked up enough dust about it. Supposedly it was an out-of-court settlement.

But yeah, it was a pretty big deal.

"Under Pressure":

EDIT: Since the above is Queen performing it without Bowie, here's a recent concert with Bowie and no Queen (of course with no Freddie Mercury, Queen sounds very different these days with Paul Rodgers:

"Ice Ice Baby":

Now how close are those baselines lines, among other added elements like that the piano every now and then?

Just posting the videos for comparison.

What a way to make a return--talking about the return of a psycho killer.

I'm not sure if I will see this in theaters, but I'm definitely going to try to catch it some time. I missed out on Red Dragon and Hannibal and still haven't seen them.

Silence of the Lambs forever rocks, of course.

First off, neurons do not grow back. Once they're dead, they aren't coming back, hence why there's a push for stem cell research for people who've lost a severe amount of irreplaceable cells to diseases, cancer, and such and why it's best to try and teach babies things no matter how young they are (as their brains are so high in cell numbers).

I have no real professional opinion on this one as I really don't know which truly is worse, though I can agree that more diseases and cancers are the result of cigarette smoking.

I've had friends try to convince me to smoke with them because anything negative said about weed is just a conspiracy started by the government in some way. One of them even gave me a pamphlet he printed off the Internet (for God knows where) about the government illegalizing it to give a reason for arresting and deporting Mexicans.

I don't know how true these statements are but I've never been pushed so hard to smoke cigarettes as I have been to smoke weed. I've found that those who do push are those who want to validate their behavior because they don't want to feel weird like the odd man out and it makes them feel less guilty for what they're doing. Not to say that all pot smokers are like this, but I've come across many.

What's more these friends are also the ones who say there isn't anything addictive about weed, but can't seem to quit or even function without it (much like the smokers who say they can quit any time). I have heard from doctors that after 10 years on weed, the high tends to kick off and so many people do quit because it isn't doing anything for them anymore. However, a few friends of mine have been on it for well past 10 years, but still can't seem to go without for longer than 2 hours.

Same goes for the cigarette smokers, of course. I do also have friends who, whenever they get the chance or are outside, MUST light up. They go through multiple packs a day. Good grief, and one of these friends was on a medication that was making her sick when she smoked, so what does she do? She quits taking the medication.

Also in regards to the statement about weed really starting to cause mental problems after heavily smoking for 20 years, this is true, but I'll add that it doesn't necessarily take that long. I've known people who've been moderately smoking for 5 years and seem to have gone permanently retarded, literally. But in converse of this, I do know those who've been going for years and seem perfectly fine. There are some definite behavioral patterns I've seen in those who've gone a long time: things ranging from being slower in getting things done to being moody when they've gone without smoking for a few hours (This can also apply to cigarette smokers. DEFINITELY).

Again, I have no professional opinion on this one, but I've seen a pretty wide spectrum. In the end, the worst I've ever seen a person smoking weed come down to are lower job expectations and slower in thinking, reaction times, speech, and work, whereas cigarette smokers open themselves up to lung cancer, heart disease, having to spend the rest of their lives with a hole in your neck and talking through a machine, among other innumerable problems.

In conclusion, chemical dependency sucks.

The most dedicated pot smokers I know are over 30. A 46-year-old friend of mine has been smoking off and on since she was 13. While she's pretty smart, she is often very slow in thinking and gets VERY moody when she hasn't had her fix in a while. A couple I know, both over 30, often have to hot box in their truck when we're out somewhere to pump themselves up for shows they do. They just have to be high sometimes, but both of them are sharp as tacks and really cool people. Again with the moodiness when they haven't smoked out in a while.

The more "smoked themselves retarded" pot smokers I know tend to be in their early 20s. Believe you me, were you to meet them you would think they were dropped on their heads as children while being force-fed lead.

As for cigarette smokers, I used to hang out at the Rocky Horror Picture Show and EVERYONE smoked--30-somethings would be bumming smokes off 12-year-olds. It was pretty crazy.

Hell, if I may, I'd like to add alcohol to the list. I swear, after having been to so many parties where under-aged drinking actually turned scary and the cops needed to be called on people who went insane after polishing off a whole bottle of Bacardi 151, it's a wonder the stuff is even legal. Not pushing temperance or anything (God no!!), I enjoy the occasional drink myself, but it's when people drink to excess that the stuff turns demonic.

"Hannibal" is another sequel that came out. I remember when a lot of people were mad that Jodie Foster was replaced with Julianne Moore for the part of Clarice.

Every now and then I think about starting this thread because I'll be planning something to do over the weekend and want to post about it, but a whole thread on some inane thing I'd be doing would be really lame. I'm also the kind of person who spends time thinking about how I should spend my weekend since the weekdays can be fairly brutal.

At the same time, I'd like to hear what other people are doing. Even just hanging out with friends can be fascinating. Hell, even just vegging and trying to beat a video game has its niftiness.

So whatever you're doing, let's hear it!

I'm going to the Getty Villa with Zoso and my mom again. I had originally planned the trip for my dad as he had never gone before and since he spent a good chunk of last month in the hospital or otherwise stuck at home because of the machines attached to him, I wanted him to be able to just hang out and roam around the grounds (Typical shot of the main garden).

But as fate would have it, it's tax season and as a self-employed accountant he's still stuck at home.

Last weekend was pretty sweet. Party at WhiteRose's with Elara, VenomnousLobster, Zabuza, GuardianOni, Pockets, Zoso, Captain Jack Sparrow, and Junkie (who never posts here anymore). Played with WhiteRose's puppy, but had to leave early for Zoso's band's gig at this sports bar where all the waitresses were literally wearing next to nothing.

Because I'd been meaning to read the series and never got around to it, I started reading The Fellowship of the Ring today and hope to finish the series before the end of the month.

While I'm not a very slow reader, I tend to not have time to sit down and read for hours on end.

Bloody Jack Wasn't as bad as it seemed, though it began to drag near the end. Still have a few books in that series to polish off. While it's meant to be a sea epic, it's more like the diary of a young girl while not actually written in the journal form.

As it turns out Voidcrush has another gig on Saturday at some place in San Bernardino. Have to shoot some pictures.

Here are some pics from a gig they did in December:

There are many more (and better) pictures, but my Flickr account stopped letting me upload more pictures. Will have to post more, and with the drummer.

Also will have to figure out when and how I'm going to pick up a 6 foot high, 5 feet wide, 200 pound cabinet with glass doors from the middle of the desert.

I have plans of getting the RNA strand symbol from Heroes which is also a combination of the Japanese symbols "Godsend" and "great power" on my right shoulder blade.

As seen in one of Isaac's paintings

Decided to get it because my friend, Haylee, wrote an amazing story for my magazine on the history of tattooing at the Pike (this place in Long Beach that could have rivaled Coney Island, but was bull-dozed in the '70s). I'm going to get it done by the woman prominently featured in the story, Kari Barba, who is fighting tooth and nail to preserve some of the things that weren't taken out by the recent refurbishment.
