Originally posted by Elara I think it's safe to say that he might be speaking on abstract level. He said that white people were killing black people through psycological, cultural, spitual, and social means--all of these I would agree with, though actual killing does occur. The real murder I see is that of the image of the black population. I do hope that whoever my oppenent would be, would agree that black people aren't inherently inferior to any other race. Nor are they directly legally unequal to any other in the United States, at least. The problem is that people think a certain way about black people, that they are held to a lower standard even. To say and propagate the belief that blacks are less responsible for their actions that whites, that is in fact detrimental to the image of the black population. To provide an analog, one holds a higher standard for a saint, than for your everyday person. In addition to this, black people are the subject of negative social norms and institutionalized inequalities. The propagation of negative attitudes eventually becomes embedded into the mesh of society, such that it becomes normal. |

Originally posted by .SK Horrible, verging on blatent heartlessness. Everyone only cares about themselves, if you boil it down. No one--I say this meaning the vast majority of about 99.999-something percent--donates their excess paycheck to charity. Actual people try to inflate their achievements. Essentially, you can't say a corporation is bad as much as you can say a bacterium is bad, they both are held to their purposes. A corporation's goal is to maximize profits, and if laying off people does so, then there is nothing "wrong" about it. A corporation has its role in the economic cycle, just as consumers do. Just like there is nothing "bad" in a bacterium giving someone the flu, there is nothing bad about a corporation maximizing profits. |

Might I inquire by what means a corporation does so? And one cannot equate Wal-Mart with all corporations. |

"The seller ended this listing early to sell to the high bidder(s) at current bid price."
Some people don't read the not-so-fine print. Both parties registered positive feedback. |

(see ya)It's actually さよなら。 But all in all, great progress, although you should be careful when typing, as it automatically kanjifies everything unless you choose the alternative,so even if you get the spelling right, if you don’t know the kanji, it’s sometime a good idea just to write in hiragana and katakana to be safe. |

Originally posted by venomouslobster Less rant, please? Race of course, is no arbitrary matter. What people think forms society. People thinking blacks are inferior creates the economic hierarchy we live in today. Expectations are often the deciding factor, not actuality, as is the case for many other things. In the U.S., being born black or Hispanic gives one a higher probablity of being born into a poor family. Being born into a poor family restricts one's options in education--one is more likely to live in an area with poor schooling, and also not be able to afford a tutor, books, attend a private school, and often one is unable to attend many colleges, with expenses going up as well as rates for loans. When one is poor and talented, there is less of a place and chance to develop that talent; on the other hand, if one is at a disadvantage, there is less of a chance that this will be sought out and corrected. Granted that there are genii who will overcome such boundries as poverty, but albeit, these are few and far apart, so they can be justifiably ruled out of the normal case. The same is the case for the rags to riches argument, it simply does not stand constistant with what is true for the majority. Back to the education, not that many poor black people are going to be successful rappers, and statistics state, and eyes confirm that blacks and Hispanics are poorer than white people. It has been socially normalized that the blacks and Hispanics are a bunch of dropouts who do nothing in school and do drugs and are in gangs. The same is true for Asians studying all the time and white people--doing whatever white people do. It's very easy, and accepted to just fit into that niche that is already created. Do these social norms matter and have a lasting impact, even though they aren't always true? Most definitely. |

Originally posted by Kyoku kun Yeah, just don't use space bar and end with the enter key and it will stay as hiragana. To use katakana, the easy way is to type something, press F7, and the underlined part with be katakanified. About that, make sure only what you want is underlined. By using the enter key often。And press enter before doing a comma。Generally、 it’s safe to just press enter after every word. (Last edited by Logos on 12-20-06 12:54 AM) |

Originally posted by venomouslobster Source, please. I know what I'm talking about. I'm talking about black people as a whole. Nigerians, in fact, don't make too much of a dent on the actuality that the average Hispanic or black person earns a lot less than the average white or asian person. Here's my source. And Elara, I didn't say it determined it, but that statistics would imply that depravity effects more deprivity. But look at Berkeley, only about three percent of their admitted freshmen are black. Of course, that doesn't mean that less black people get a education, but if one looked at other colleges, it would be about the same. Blacks and Hispanics get the short end of the stick when it comes to the American Dream. And the importance of social norms cannot be understated, but I guess if one wanted, they could just think of everything as dumb and not bother with anything. |
