Wow.

Can we figure out how to make that into a human trait? You know, make a Mosquito Man or something and use his stem cells to save millions of people? Huh huh huh?

So this was the first year that I've watched the Oscars (I only caught the last half because there was nothing else on) without having seen ANY of the movies nominated.

I didn't bother with hype last year and just went to see movies that I knew I'd like or find enjoyable rather than movies that I figured might get nominated.

Not to say that Academy Award-nominated films aren't entertaining, it's just the ones that win (at least the last few that I've seen) I find either horribly boring, revoltingly over-dramatic (as satirized in the James Bond-parody episode of American Dad where TearJerker produces a fictitious movie called "Oscar Gold"), or they just won out of sheer popularity rather than merit.

I can't really say much for this year's line-up, especially since I didn't see any of them, but from what I hear No Country for Old Men was pretty good.

Yeah, Ron Paul's ideas don't exactly fit in the Republican mold. I really like what he stands for. More so than Hillary or Obama.

And there are a few conservatives on the board. The liberals are just loud.

Video Catches Bus Driver Fighting With Student

PHOENIX -- Video released Thursday from a camera mounted inside a Higley Unified School District bus shows the bus driver engaging in a physical confrontation with a teenage girl.

The incident happened last Friday, when 54-year-old Kim Sullivan was driving students home from Williams Field High School in Gilbert.

The video shows Sullivan stopping the bus after repeatedly warning 15-year-old Samantha Taylor to sit back in her seat and stop touching the boy in front of her.

After stopping the bus, Sullivan walked back toward Taylor's seat and asked her why she was on the bus, then told her to find another way to get to and from school.

Taylor tried to exit the bus; Sullivan tried to push her back into her seat.

Taylor repeatedly yelled at Sullivan to "stop touching me" and called her mother on her cell phone.

Sullivan said she was calling police.

The altercation escalated when Taylor handed Sullivan her phone to speak with her mother, and Sullivan tossed the phone aside.

Taylor then began screaming at Sullivan, "You punched me!" though the alleged blow was not visible on the video.

Another student trying to exit the bus, 14-year-old Cassandra Schlosser, told her mother on her cell phone that the bus driver was "like about to get in a fistfight with Sammy."

About a minute later, the confrontation turned into a full-blown physical fight when Taylor moved forward to grab her phone and Sullivan tried to push her back.

The laughs and jeers of the other students on the bus turned to gasps of shock that faded to silence as Taylor and Sullivan continued to grapple with each other. Though the two moved forward and out of range of the camera's lens, the sound of a blow being struck is clearly heard on the video.

The two moved back into view of the camera with Sullivan pulling Taylor's hair. At the same moment, Sullivan's 16-year-old daughter came running forward, screaming at Taylor to get off her mother. She grabbed two handfuls of Taylor's hair and tried to pull the girl off Sullivan.

She then told Sullivan to get off of Taylor, but continued to pull Taylor's hair in her attempts to wrestle Taylor away from her mother.

Schlosser then joined the melee, yelling at the Sullivans to get off of Taylor, a few seconds before a male student came forward and knocked Sullivan's daughter away from Taylor.

The fight continued for about another minute, ending when a tearful Taylor joined the rest of the students as they exited the bus through an emergency exit door on the side of the vehicle.

Sullivan, also in tears, then radioed her dispatcher, asking, "Where is my help that I asked for?"

A school district official told the East Valley Tribune that a school supervisor was on the way to the bus but was stuck in traffic. The official said one student called police while the incident unfolded, but the students had left the bus by the time officers arrived.

When a female student approached Sullivan after the brawl to ask if she was OK, Sullivan responded, "Yes? it's all on the tape."

Gilbert police are conducting a criminal investigation of the incident and said they would request charges against Sullivan when the investigation was complete.

The school district is also conducting an administrative investigation in conjunction with police.

On Wednesday, the district sent a letter home to parents informing them of the incident, the Tribune reported.

Taylor, Schlosser and Sullivan's daughter were suspended, and Sullivan was placed on paid leave, according to the Tribune.

Sullivan has worked as a bus driver for the district since last June and has driven buses elsewhere before, the Tribune reported. The Higley school district is not aware of any complaints against the driver, a district official told the newspaper.

CBS 5 viewer e-mails showed an overwhelming support for Sullivan, with several expressing the sentiment that "this is the reason there are driver shortages."

To be honest, while the girl was acting like a spoiled brat, I can't help but side with her. When she leaned in to get her phone, the bus driver initiated the physical part of all of this.

What's more, she should have kept driving rather than getting up and yelling at the girl to find another way to and from school. What did that accomplish?

But still, "Bull SHOOT!"

Yeah, I was thinking if she wants her off the bus anyway and the girl is insisting to be let off then why not just open the door and let her go?

The argument that a lot of people are making, and I understand what they're talking about, is that the bus driver can only let students off at a designated stop and not just anywhere where the bus driver could be held liable if something happens to them.

Which leads me to ask why the hell she just stops the bus (because supposedly the girl was tormenting the guy in front of her, you know, like half the kids on school buses do to each other) at some random place to tell the girl off. If she had just continued driving or perhaps issued a warning while the bus was in motion, it wouldn't have gotten this ridiculous.

Ha, 300 was nominated? Then I guess I did see something that was nominated.

This is too funny. Someone was doing a live interview with Jon Stewart afterwards and this happened:

How awkward.

Seriously, unlike the "Don't taze me, bro!" video, this more left me bemused rather than in shock. I mean, it's a ridiculous fight on a school bus. Both parties are just using their hands and I'm sure they could take care of themselves.

I kinda snickered when the bus driver cried into the radio about not getting the help she asked for and finding out they were stuck in traffic. It all sort of mirrors how inane the situation was.

Try to keep this off a personal level, Spartan. You're free to say what you want on the topic, but ad hominem attacks usually kill what a person says in a debate.

On a side note, if Barack were Muslim I don't see why it's an issue. Muslim doesn't equal terrorist/suicide bomber. What's more, wouldn't that show other countries that America doesn't just elect one religious body to lead?

Now in regards to his political rival, I really don't know how I feel about Hillary. While being a strong woman, were she elected it would show that there are 2 families that are leading this country: the Bush(e)s and the Clintons. I dunno.

Name a movie that...

Reminds you of an ex: She's All That. My ex and I sort of considered Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" to be our song and since that movie and song sort of go hand-in-hand, there's your answer.

Reminds you of an ex-friend: The Rocky Horror Picture Show, pretty much since I used to work it and I rarely see many of those friends these days.

Makes you sad, but in a good way: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Harold and Maude, City Lights, Hook (I always get emo over the flashback sequence), the last parts of Kill Bill Volume 2 and American Beauty, and the occasional Disney flick (I get this odd pride, and remember watching these for the first time as a kid).

Makes you laugh REALLY hard: Kung Fu Hustle, Big Lebowski, Kentucky Fried Movie, Grindhouse: Planet Terror, Snatch, The Arisocrats, Team America, and a few different horror films. Kevin Smith and Christopher Guest movies, the first time I saw them, also made me laugh hysterically.

You never want to see again: Epic Movie, Summer Solstice, and Cocaine Fiends.

You watch over and over again and haven't gotten tired of it: There are several movies I could put in here, but to list ones I haven't already, Cannibal: The Musical!, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Orgazmo, Danny Deckchair, Falling Down, Quills, and Comic Book: The Movie.

Sums up your teenage years: Ghost World, Harold and Maude, and to a certain extent Mallrats and Battle Royale.

Has characters you wish you could meet/marry want to get married to: Not sure. I kinda wish I were best friends with Maude from Harold and Maude. Marrying-wise: Alferd Packer in Cannibal only because it's a young Trey Parker. Mmm.

You like to wake up to: Wake up to? Dunno.

You like out of your parents video/DVD collection: The Godfather, The Dirty Dozen, and a few musicals.

You love but wouldn't know about if it wasn't for a friend: The Gods Must Be Crazy, Big Lebowski (I knew of it, but I wouldn't have rented it on my own), Six String Samurai, Meet the Feebles, and Kentucky Fried Movie.

Reminds you of your now crush/love: Terminator 2. It's Brandon's favorite movie. Also 300, Grindhouse and the Star Trek movies.

Hasn't been released yet but you love already: CJ7 (saw it already, though it's coming out next Friday), Star Trek and Indiana Jones 4. Both of those I know I'll love no matter what.

Are embarrassed to admit you like: Troma movies--Tromeo and Juliet. Also Disney movies. Every now and then I like a good chick flick, but they're usually not my thing.

Can't figure out why so many people like it: Napoleon Dynamite, definitely. Also: Caddy Shack, Rebel Without a Cause, Westside Story (although I notice that when I skip past the Tony and Maria junk, it's a lot more enjoyable), Shakespeare in Love (same thing with the previous, just with Will and Viola), Cloverfield, and in a way, Highlander (I mean, it was all right, but why all the sequels?).

You like, but no one else seems to: Krippendorf's Tribe, Shock Treatment, CJ7 Jersey Girl, and probably some others out there.

You can remember being the first movie you ever saw: The earliest movies I can remember watching were Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. After that are Goonies and various Disney movies.

Has songs you sing along with no matter where you are: Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Cannibal: The Musical!, A Mighty Wind, Cabaret, Reefer Madness: The Musical, and once in a while I sing along to the Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter.

You own all the sequels to: Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, The Godfather, and Battle Royale.

You love, but the sequels piss you off: X-men (only for X3) and Spider-Man (also only for Spidey 3).

You went to see at midnight: 300 in IMAX, Matrix Revolutions, X2 and X3, Hulk, Kill Bill Volume 1, Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban, Beowulf in IMAX 3D, and there are probably a bunch I'm forgetting.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,331732,00.html

Parents of Baby Left Alone in Car Seat for 8 Days Face Murder Charges

PEORIA, Ill. ? A central Illinois couple faces first-degree murder charges in the death of their 5-month-old baby, who was found unresponsive in a car seat that had been placed in a crib.

Both Tracey Hermann, 21, and James Sargent, 23, appeared Wednesday in Peoria County Circuit Court in the death of Benjamin Sargent.

The charges state the parents' actions or lack thereof, were "brutal and heinous . . . indicative of wanton cruelty," factors that could mean they face up to 100 years in prison if convicted.

The 5-month-old was dropped off at his parents' house on Feb. 4, strapped into his car seat. Eight days later, he was found in the same position, said Peoria County State's Attorney Kevin Lyons during a bond hearing for the parents.

"He died from starvation due to neglect from these two defendants, his parents," Lyons said. "It's the worst case of child neglect we have seen since the turn of this century."

Sargent said virtually nothing, during a 20-minute hearing before Peoria County Circuit Judge Glenn Collier. Hermann told Collier her attorney was in Hawaii so she requested a court-appointed lawyer.

Collier ordered the two held without bond pending a hearing Friday, when it is expected that Lyons will present more evidence as to why the two should not be released pending trial.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said Wednesday the baby weighed 10 pounds when he was found by police. He was nearly eight pounds at birth, she said.

Reading from a prepared statement, Lyons said police found the infant sitting in his own waste, all the while strapped into the seat which was in a crib.

During the eight days the baby was strapped in the seat, both Hermann and Sargent were home, "playing video games, watching TV, feeding and caring for themselves," Lyons said.

Lawyers in the state's attorney's juvenile division have begun proceedings to permanently remove Hermann's 3-year-old daughter from the home. That child was staying with another family member but is now in the care of Department of Family and Children's Services.

For further detail into this case, here's the opening statement from the prosecuting attorney, Peoria County State's Attorney Kevin Lyon:

On February 12, 2008, Peoria Police responded to a call at 3012 W. Proctor Street in Peoria. Found dead and strapped in a car seat that had been placed in a crib was 5-month-old Benjamin Sargent. The defendants are his parents. Benjamin was wearing a blue snow suit. It was zipped up. The temperature in the room was near 80 degrees.Benjamin's eyes were open, his hands were clenched in a fist-like position and, although dead, his eyes were staring straight ahead. Police investigation and medical and pathological examination would reveal that Benjamin had been strapped into this car seat and had not left it in eight days. All waste and urine had collected beneath him and his buttocks, legs and back were eaten into by the resulting poison. Some waste left in benjamin's colon revealed resulted in constipation because it could not be pushed out of his body due to starvation.

James Sargent was present at the house and, when interviewed on that day, and again on February 18, his answers to questions confirmed for police that Benjamin had been returned to the residence on february 4, 2008, by a grandmother and he was in the same car seat, wearing the same snow suit, and confined in the same manner as when he was found dead eight days later. A person who 'stayed' with others in the garage of the defendants told police that he was the one who observed Benjamin in the car seat, and on the living room floor, and that it was he who found this odd and so, he placed the child (while in the car seat) in a baby crib in a bedroom. The house was kept in an outrageous condition with nothing in its place, food left out and spoiled, and belongings scattered everywhere. Clothing, articles, spoilage, and debris were stacked everywhere around the house.

James Sargent told police he "thought" he had maybe moved Benjamin once or twice during the eight-day period but, upon further questioning, he conceded that he may not have been moved at all. The person from the garage tells police that Benjamin was found just as he had left him eight days earlier. The 'mother' was in Iowa, where she had gone to see a male boyfriend she found over the internet. She told police that caring for her baby Benjamin was not her duty and that it was James' responsibility. Before heading to Iowa on the day before Benjamin was found dead, Tracy Hermann said she looked at the baby in the crib and presumed he was sleeping so she said she stuck a bottle between the baby and the side of the carseat so that he woke up he could grab it and feed himself if he was hungry. In case the court missed it earlier, Benjamin Sargent was five months old. Tracy Hermann also has a daughter, almost 3, who Tracy Hermann seems to have 'given away' to a family member.

A shelter care hearing on that matter now pends in the circuit court because I am also seeking to remove her permanently and forever from any contact with Tracy Hermann. Preliminary examination of Benjamin Sargent's body showed that he weighed 10 pounds, suffered from sepsis in the blood and tissue, was without proper liquid and food and that he died from starvation due to neglect by the two defendants who stand before you, Tracey D. Hermann and James E. Sargent.

I read all this yesterday just before I went to hang out with my friend, Christina, and her 1-year-old, Jayne. Jayne is unofficially my goddaughter (unofficially because the baptism hasn't happened yet). While out having lunch together, I couldn't help but picture Jayne in baby Benjamin's position and it absolutely broke my heart.

Not that Christina would ever mistreat her daughter (seriously Christina talks Jayne down from screaming and has never raised her voice at her or hit/spanked her in any way), but I just couldn't grasp how someone could just do this to their own child. ANY child for that matter.

I'm at a loss.

One thing I definitely am, though, is pissed.

As I read article after article on this, I kept devising worse and worse theoretical punishments for the parents in my head, specifically for the mother.

Yeah, the Fucking Seth rogen one isn't really funny unless you know them and Kevin Smith. Then it's almost an inside joke that's still only good for a chuckle.

Even still, I thought the Matt Damon one was the funny the first time I saw it, but then Jimmy Kimmel sort of killed it.

No reports that I've read have confirmed it, but by looking at their pictures in the media and judging by their actions I could swear baby Benjamin's parents were strung out on methamphetamines.

It's really the only way I can explain such heinous behavior, on their parts, in my head.

Seriously, I kept thinking about these people ignoring a screaming child, one that's crying in agony until he's too weak to cry any longer, and I feel physically ill.

American Gods is now being offered online for free.

http://browseinside.harpercollins.com/index.aspx?isbn13=9780060558123&WT.mc_id=author_AmerGods_FullAccess_022208

Check it out before it's gone.

EDIT: Oh and if you were ever curious about what Neil's Sandman series was like, DC has the first issue online: http://www.dccomics.com/media/excerpts/1696_1.pdf

According to Neil, though, the last and second to last pages are switched.

I just got done with the first 4 volumes of Invincible. I really like how it makes a lot of references to various movies and comics.

I wish my library carried more volumes. Oh well, at least now I can talk about something with Robert Kirkman the next time I see him instead of just asking what he thinks of Scott Kurtz's satirical drawings of him.

There's this know-it-all guy on LiveJournal. Probably in his 40s. Always bitching about never finding fellow fanboys/fangirls who are up to speed with him and his geekitude.

I had to explain the term "fapped" to him.

Oh dear.

I just spent the day roaming all over L.A. with my mother who apparently hasn't seen a lot of it in the 30 some odd years she's lived in this country. Played tour guide for her.

I'm EXTREMELY sore from the waist down from all the walking and standing on buses and trains.

Anyway, I'm glad we spent time together.
