So the U.S. economy is in the tank, but seriously when isn't it? Economies rise and fall as is their nature, trouble is it's gotten to the point that our generation is going to have to pay higher interest rates on loans and such to pay it back.
Score! But just when you thought it couldn't get any better, the U.S. is going to unveil their newest mint-y creation--a new PENNY (street value of a whopping ONE CENT). The new coin will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's first appearance on the penny as well as the 200th anniversary of his birth. It cost $0.08 to mint each one of these bad boys. Huzzah! America, you're on report. EDIT: Check these guys out: Forgot to mention there's going to be 4 of them and rotating around until there's more of them out there. Sorry, we're actually $9 trillion in the hole. Awesome.
EDIT: I should add, though, that due to trust funds and social security it can be counted as less than that. Still, a new penny? The hell? (Last edited by Rogue on 09-22-08 07:57 PM) |

Originally posted by Cyro Xero For some time there's been something of a movement to have pennies removed from the U.S. currency due to how utterly worthless they can be. Personally I disagree because everything would round up to the nearest 5, which doesn't seem like much, but would definitely add up over time. What I object to here, is the fact that it costs 8 times what the coin is "worth" to mint it. For every $1, it took $8 to make it, $800 for every $100, and so on. It's just a waste. At least that's how I see it--I'm sure there are coin collectors and enthusiasts out there who think this is the greatest thing to happen to currency in a long time. While they did the same with quarters, dollar coins, and new bills, there isn't as much of a marginal loss as minting pennies. And in answer to TP, I actually don't know if this is just a celebratory coin (which I suspect it is) or a permanent change. All I've heard is there are four designs which will supposedly be circulated one at a time like state quarters. |

Found a new one from someone on LJ. Meh, I'm bored.
[01] Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey? - Sure? [02] Would you do meth if it was legalized? - Definitely not. [03] Abortion: for or against it? - I'm pro-choice. I'm not pro-aborting all fetuses or anything, but the option should be there to have the procedure done legally and safely or else you're going to get girls destroying themselves in desperation. [04] Do you think the world would fail with a female president? - Hell no. For the record I'm not in favor of either Clinton or Palin, but it's not like the world fell when Margaret Thatcher was the prime minister. [05] Do you believe in the death penalty? - Some people just need to pay that price for their sins. [06] Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already? - To be fair, it would be better if a lot of things were legalized. There are a lot of BAD people who are making their living off American addiction--drug lords, terrorists, cartels, etc. If the U.S. legalized, regulated, and taxed a lot of drugs, it would not only help the economy but cut off a lot of those guys I mentioned. [07] Are you for or against premarital sex? - Yes. [08] Do you believe in God? - I'm agnostic. I simply don't know. [09] Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized? - Its banning and this proposition California is going to be voting in to get rid of it in our state is beyond idiotic to me. If two people love each other they should be allowed to make that commitment. Like a friend of mine so endearingly says, "Gays should have the right to lose half their crap like the rest of us." [10] Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA? - What's so wrong about it? This country was founded on immigration. I do feel that they should seek out naturalization, though. [11] A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it? - It's not my business. And a lot of people should feel that way too. Now I'll be honest, it's a shame that this is happening, and in actuality placing the child up for adoption would probably be the more ideal for both parties, but it's HER choice. [12] Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen? - If you can vote, smoke, drive, have sex and get married without parental consent, serve on a jury, buy a gun, be tried as an adult, and die for your country, you should be allowed to have a beer. Seriously, how many people weren't drinking at 18? [13] Should the war in Iraq be called off? - I honestly don't know. I do, however, would rather not see this drift into Iran. [14] Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree? - I do not. If someone wants to die and/or end their suffering, they should be allowed to. [15] Do you believe in spanking your children? - Not severely. A smack on the ass is definitely better than getting belted and gets the point across. Talking to your child is ideal and all, but often the severity of what you say doesn't sink in. [16] Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars? - If I were given a million dollars, you bet I would. Technically I've already done it for Girl Scouts, where we burned an old, tattered flag as is the custom when a flag is retired. It's a symbol, but it's also only cloth. People often take symbols too seriously. [17] Who do you think would make a better president? McCain or Obama? - Ron Paul. [18] Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers? - It's not like I outed myself or anything. I don't hide any of my beliefs regarding these things. |

Almost two weeks, any black holes yet?
They're shutting down the LHC until Spring of 2009 while they fix a magnetic failure in it. |

Now that's an easy one--Cheese-Its ALL the WAY. Especially if it's the jack cheddar-flavored ones or even the 4 cheese crisps with chèvre spread on top. Mmmmm.
What's your favorite restaurant and why? |

Yeah it was something about a tonne of liquid helium getting into the tube. They're going to be fixing it until then, but it actually was up and in working order for 2 weeks. | |||

All right, I'll buy detaining someone because you got a call that vaguely describes someone who works on a shift you're managing stealing something from a customer.
But THAT'S IT. Once it moved to strip searching, you're a moron to believe it's anyone of authority. You don't touch them or even look at them the wrong way. You wait for the police to show up to do that. What's more, and not to blame the victim, WHY did she let the fiance do so much to her?! After being strip searched, which is already crossing the line, no police officer worth is salt is going to sit on the phone for 2 hours instructing a grown man to spank a girl and insist that she perform sexual acts on him. It's rather sad that the now ex-manager had to have her lawyer intervene to say that she "didn't see" the girl naked when she walked in. When I was reading Battle Royale, another tale of "following orders," it brings up real life experiments (called the Milgram Experiment after Yale professor Stanley Milgram) that have been carried out regarding how far a person will go to follow orders. The experiment usually goes as such: A volunteer is placed in a room and placed at a set of buttons, a switch, or something of the like. He is told there is a person in another room who's wired to the implement in question that's in front of the volunteer and will be shocked with a certain amount of voltage when the switched is flipped on. A person of a authority--usually a "teacher"--commands the volunteer to hit the button/swtich multiple times causing someone in the next room to scream in agony as they're being "shocked." The person in the next room is usually an actor who is cued to scream when the volunteer presses on. The voltage would be raised and the person doing the shocking rarely backed down. Those who did were pressured verbally to continue. Most did. In the end, the experiment showed that when given orders, more than half of the volunteers followed through to the end. The test has been repeated multiple times with similar results. |

Well the question stands, how likely is an LHC blackhole? Either way, the blackhole opens it up for the possibility that within the blackhole there's another universe, and if not at least the end would be pretty quickly.
An asteroid's like getting stabbed. You see it coming, maybe you can stop it, but in the end getting hit would be an agonizing wait. That is if it is an end at all. Who knows? Last time you attended a formal event? |

Definitely the kidney. I'd be EXTREMELY upset if I had something amputated, especially if I were found out in the open without the possibility of it being reattached.
Never meet anyone famous ever or meet your hero, become best friends with him/her and they end up being an asshole who owes you a LOT of money and is always bothering you to hang out and pay for everything? |

Fantasy. The sci-fi worlds are often a dystopian society in some way. I mean, Star Trek's cool, but I'd still rather be in something like Lord of Rings or Of Two Minds' worlds.

Happy birthday!
I assume you've already been drinking like the rest of us anyway, but here's to getting to do it in bars, clubs, or even better strip joints. Happy birthday to NUCKLEAR also. If he sees this. |

I'm really fascinated by this. Sounds like a great idea actually, since for some people it's the oral fixation and the need to blow something out.

OK, as I mentioned in another thread, L.A. had a trainwreck on Sept. 12 (resulted in 25 deaths and over 100 injured).
Conan O'Brien, a couple nights ago, was doing a bit on the Large Hadron Collider and used words like "colliding" and "smash stuff together." Not long into the bit, as it was shown in L.A., KNBC interrupted it explaining that they felt it inappropriate that he was talking about "trains crashing" (seriously, the anchor had this uppity look on her face about it) and then to "distract" us she starts talking about McCain's speech on the economy. AGAIN, Conan was in no way discussing trains, and the accident happened TWO weeks ago. Defamer has a video of it here: Link I might add that you can't turn on a TV in Los Angeles right now without getting ads for lawyers claiming they want to represent you if you were involved in the accident. And Rangel was caught not paying taxes on a second house. It's a great time to be alive.
As Nelson Muntz would say it, "HA, HA!" |
