| Well the fanatics are the ones that Perry is pandering to. And yes, not all Christians are that way... but there are way more than you'd think... like it is shocking how many think that if you aren't Christian than you must be waging a war against them... it's fucking stupid.
I actually got in a huge debate with a friend because he was annoyed at the whole Merry Christmas thing... and I tried to explain that people are asking for "Happy Holidays" because it isn't the only holiday celebrated this month. Pagans have Yule, Jews have Hanukkah, Muslims Ramadan, and Africans Kwanzaa. It's not an "attack" it is acknowledging that it's not the only one, and that you don't know by looking at someone which one the celebrate unless they make some obvious sign (like wearing a cross or a yamakah or a pentacle). Then he started bitching about "holiday trees" ... First, I have heard no one, and I mean no one, use that phrase. Closest thing I've heard is "Tree lighting ceremony" in place of "Christmas tree lighting ceremony". Second, Pagans usually use them as well since the practice came from us in the first place (a lot just do Yule logs, but there are many still who grew up with trees and we want to keep them)... so it's not a Christmas-only thing. His response was "I don't go to other countries and tell them how to celebrate their holiday that they celebrate". Uh... dude, Christmas isn't an American-only holiday. Sadly, he could not seem to grasp that concept. At least he wasn't as bad as other people who are like "If you don't celebrate Christmas you're not American so GTFO"... those are the people that piss me off. If you know a person celebrates Christmas, then go ahead and say Merry Christmas. It's hilarious to me that the only people I see getting really offended about all this are the Christians. I don't flip out if someone says "Merry Christmas" to me, I just say "Happy Holidays" back. Sometimes I even say Merry Christmas instead, since obviously they celebrate it. I cannot wear my pentacle openly at work, so they don't know I am Pagan (nor would I doubt they'd know what it meant anyway)... I would prefer Happy Holidays, or even a Merry Yule... but I won't get it and I know it. Especially not here, where people honestly get pissed off at having to work on Good Friday. But I digress... short version: Perry is an idiot pandering to bigger idiots that don't actually have a clue to what is really going on in the world. They think that everyone should be super Christian and HAVE to pray in schools and yadda yadda yadda. Christian clubs are still allowed to pray in school as part of their club functions. If a student just wants to pray quietly, they can. Teachers/Administrators cannot make the students pray. That is what changed. Because the non-Christian students (and even the ones like JWs who have this weird thing about not praying with non-JWs) were tired of being forced to do something against their will. |

| As a grocery store cashier... I fucking hate this show. Much like the survivor shows, I'm pretty sure it's rigged. A lot of the people that get those amazing deals also just have piles of stuff in their house that they don't use. I respect the people that donate what they don't use at least... but there are not many that do around here.
Also, most of the couponers are total assholes at my store. It helps if you read the fucking coupon and the add instead of just "Oh, this brand-name!" Every time I have to void like ten items because you were too lazy to check the size on the can I want to fucking scream. Now, some of them are super nice. The best couponer that I have seen at my store usually doesn't actually buy the two carts or more worth of stuff, she just has amazing organization and is great at paring coupons to our sales. So far she's the only one that I've seen get it down to zero, granted that was only like an $30 order but still impressive. I will admit that I am using coupons more now than I did before working at Giant Eagle, but even though I look through the ads now I still only find a miniscule amount of coupons for things I'd actually buy. ... and fyi... there are CLASSES on couponing now. That one lady I mentioned, the really good one... yeah... she teaches one. |

| That is a really hard question for me since I never really pay attention to the artists, just go "Oooh, pretty!"
I think though, that the artist that has stood out most to me over the years has been Otto Dix. He was a German expressionist during the post WWI years. I came across his work while I was researching for a paper on the Weimar Republic and I felt that he captured perfectly the wounded aspect of society... it's hard to put into words, but when I look at his work I can see the horror that he went through and how it affected him and shaped his views, and how he and many others viewed the decadence of the 1920s afterward. He has so many paintings of wounded vets lying in the streets begging while flappers walk by, ignoring them. Women staring vainly into mirrors and admiring their beauty, but they are deformed. Things like that. What is the best treatment you can think of for a sore throat that doesn't make you sleepy? (No reason *innocent look*) |
