Currently out of the country right now. I have free wi-fi at my hotel, but once I get on my ship on Tuesday, wi-fi there will cost $0.75/minute.

Where I am right now, it went from sunny to full freaking downpour pretty quickly. All the guys selling selfie sticks conveniently switch to selling umbrellas and ponchos. Ended up fairly damp since I refused to buy any because I had two packed umbrellas back at the room.

Checked my library account just now and noticed a book I have been on the waitlist for since Septmber 16, 2014 is now available for me to pick up. Problem is they're only holding it until Sept. 23. I come back into town the night of the 26th. D'oh.

Presently in Rome, and actually fed up with it. Really looking forward to the rest of my trip sailing around the boot and taking in the sights of the Adriatic.

Considering the fact that I've been completely out of touch with American politics for the last two and a half weeks, I'm not entirely up on everything that's been going on in the madhouse.
Frankly, I've been rather undecided this whole time, but I know I'm definitely not voting Trump. If Biden does indeed decide to run, I may throw in with him. |

Hope everyone's doing well. How'd the offer go, Xeo?
Congrats on the job upgrade, Elara! That's some cheap dental insurance. I opted out of getting it, but I'm paying $50 a check for health insurance just for me and $10/month on optical, which is doing jackshit for me. |

Had hoped the weather would break by the time we got back to California. NOPE.
Get the memo, SoCal, it's FALL. |

I really, REALLY feel you on that one. Lee and I encountered a particularly shitty one at a Chinese place in West L.A. a few years back. Wasn't deployed, but still called himself a veteran and wanted the man in the next booth, wearing a Vietnam vet hat, to give him respect. It was all rather awkward.
Fact: I habitually overpack on underwear. Going on a short trip for a couple days? Better bring 15 pairs, minimum. |

Eighteen is a LOOOOOOOONG life for a dog. She must have been well-loved. I'm sorry for your loss.
I can relate. My grandmother's dog, which I grew up with was put down after she lost her sense of sight and smell and wasn't able to care for herself and my grandmother was already starting to go, mentally. My cousin was the one who did the deed, taking Beauty away to be put down. Christ, I'm getting emotional just thinking about it. You have my deepest condolences. |

I've caught myself rooting for the bad guys in the Avengers movies since I've just come to despise them. And I, of course, cheer for the dinosaurs eating people in the "Jurassic Park" sequels.
Pretty much any movie where the hero is flat, obnoxious, spoiled, or what have you, I end up just wishing the antagonist won. So yeah, I often hope the killer takes everyone out in a lot of slasher/horror films. Granted, I hate watched horror films altogether. What was your first real fandom? |

People ARE numb to it.
I was in middle school when Columbine happened in Colorado, and even then most people I knew weren't even fazed by the fact that it could have been our school or even the fact that kids were murdered. Today's youth are much more numb to it, still of the mind that it could never happen to them, though shootings have become uncomfortably common. Last year when my cousin's teenage daughter was performing in a musical for the Hollywood Fringe and we ended up touring the other plays in the festival, we ended up watching this terrible one about a school shooting. It had lines in it like, "The killer was wearing the uniform black trench coat." The killer turned out to be this geek girl that was into LARPing, Magic Cards, Star Wars, and so on. Still, when we got out of the theater all the kids were almost laughing about the subject (the bad acting didn't help), saying it's not even relevant to their time. I was sort of worried about you, Nelrith. Wasn't sure where the shooting was or where you are right now, but all the same I hoped it wasn't your college or near you. |

I do, indeed. Picked it up in Downtown Disney. It's all Adventureland-themed stuff with the inside a teal color. Adventureland is and always will be my favorite part of Disneyland. I also love tiki bars and it has Trader Sam's logos on it.
Here's one pic of it: Here's another: When I'm staying at my friend's up in the Bay Area, I always use her Shakespearean insults mug. Do you have any plans for the future that are keeping you mentally afloat at the moment? |

These bulky ones that belong to my former publisher when I was recording a podcast with him. It goes with a mixing board, microphone, and other things I still haven't given him back (but granted, he hasn't come by to get them since we went on hiatus last year.)
What is your favorite historical era? Would you want to permanently live back then? |

All right, here we go...
Fuck you, whoever's been keying my car while I'm at work. It's my mom's Rav4, which I was driving during the accident, and honestly I've come to think of it as my car. Anyway, it seems at least once a week for the last month I find a new spot on the car that's been keyed. The last new one was while I was parked in front of this antique store down the street, for the first time. Fuck Condor Airlines. It's their fault we were late for our flight to Rome, thus missing it entirely and having to run all over Frankfurt's airport, jumping onto and off of trains, from one ticket agent to another on complete opposite sides of the airport. Insult to injury, they refused to give us the food vouchers the other airline said we were owed because we were going to be stuck at the airport for more than six hours. Fuck A LOT of the people we encountered in Rome. Frankly, I'm not all that in a hurry to return there. They're so much worse than the French there. Everyone's either trying to scam you or, if they're nice, it's because you're buying something from them (waiters, hotel staff, etc.) Furthermore, fuck that a lot of shit was under reconstruction at the same time there, with fashion ads covering historic monuments, thus ending up in everyone's vacation photos. Fuck you, woman who was trying to cut in line right next to us for St. Peter's Basilica. She walked up and took a few pictures of St. Peter's Square and then just stood there and tried to filter into the line. I turned and yelled, "Are you seriously trying to cut right here?" She ignored me while her husband waddled up to join her. Everyone around us stared and shook their heads. I turned to the man visiting from Kenya behind us and told him she was trying to cut him in line, so he bunched closer to us. I kept making a shooing motion to her face, but she just stood there silently looking forward. Her husband spoke in French to her and fell further back in the line a bit. I'm not normally so abrasive, but the rudeness of Rome was rubbing off and it was the principle of the thing. The rest of the trip was not so irritating, though we were surrounded by Australians who were incessantly complaining and jockeying for better things and making shore excursions unbearable at times. |

Despite my tone in the Fuck You thread, I actually had a pretty great time on the trip.
I'm happy we got to visit three parts of Croatia, Dubrovnik definitely not the least of the group. Happy we got to take an awesome Game of Thrones tour with a guide who's been in several episodes of the show, a huge geek for the whole fandom, and carried blown up screen caps of the show to illustrate each location that was on the show and the angle at which you can see it. Everywhere you turn you're seeing another part of King's Landing. I'm happy we essentially toured walled medieval cities in the Adriatic that haven't changed that much -- Korcula (pronounced Kor-chu-la), Valleta, Malta, and Kotor, Montenegro (pronounced Kah-tour) were all pretty freaking great alongside Dubrovnik. Happy to get to tour Malta the way we did -- that being seated in the back of an open jeep driven by a surly, retired British woman named Babs. We were tearing around the countryside and checking out some of the sights. We sadly didn't do Mdina, but I'm all for returning. Brandon was just sitting there drinking beers while we're driving around. Happy to get to say I've been to Messina now since "Much Ado About Nothing" is my absolute favorite Shakespeare play. Happy to have gotten to see a wild sea turtle while in port in Argostoli, Greece. Happy I bought Mom lots of religious souvenirs. Didn't shop much for myself, but I got her things in the Vatican, Saint Mark's Basilica in Venice, and a carving done by a monk on Mount Athos. Happy we got to wander around Venice for as long as we did. Happier to have found the church that was in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and discovering it's currently a museum on Leonardo da Vinci. Happy to see all the things we did in Rome. We really fit a lot into the two full days we allotted for visiting there along with our travel days. Happy to have not been pickpocketed. That goes for both Rome and Venice. Other non-trip happiness: Happy Bran and I went to see "These Paper Bullets," another take on "Much Ado About Nothing" when we got back. Happy it's apple cider season.
