Trailer

This moving looks amazing. Literally. The entire movie is animated, but it's completely 3D. Like how the Final Fantasy movie was. However, the models actually look like the actor/actress.

Angelina Jolie....mmmm

At Comic-Con this past weekend, Paramount did a preview where they showed two trailers and a few scenes (from when Beowulf defeats Grendel to right after his encounter with Grendel's mother). All of them in "Real-D" which is pretty much 3D.

It's AWESOME.

Apparently it's really a live action film that they touched up (hence why it looks like it's completely CG'd but looks just like the actors). Reminds me a lot of Scanner Darkly.

Anyway, Neil Gaiman and Brian Froud wrote it and for a retelling, it's amazing.

Ah... Makes sense. A guy was talking about it in my film class, so I was intrigued to find the trailer. I thought he said it wasn't live action, but I trust your knowledge waaaay more.

Well Real-D looks very interesting. I wonder if this will be the next step in Superhero movies. Eh?

Yeah, the scenes that I saw, it looked like it was completely CG'd, but Roger Avery explained at a panel in the convention that it was live action that was touched up.

My only encounter with "Real-D" was when I went to see the Nightmare Before Christmas 3D, but it was somewhat disappointing (though I think it was more because of how the movie wasn't originally designed for 3D and nothing popped out much).

The "exclusive" restricted Internet trailer was just put up today.

Flash version: http://www.beowulfmovie.com/restricted/index.html

HD version: http://www.beowulfmovie.com/restricted/video/Beowulf_InternetTrailer_720p.mov

These would probably be considered not safe for work, despite there not being all that much to see.

Went and saw it in IMAX 3D.

Outstanding.

PG-13?!

It's like watching someone playing a videogame that's a cross between God of War and Shadow of the Colossus. Seriously.

Still, I love it.

I went and saw it yesterday, and yea, I thought it was pretty awesome too. There were seriously times when I could hardly tell the difference between them and real life...

None of those times were with any of the women, who were actually not too well done compared to everyone else.

Still an awesome movie though, despite the ending, which I won't spoil for anyone.

It's not the Beowulf poem ending.

They definitely put in some interesting twists in there. The story, which is the oldest still-existing tale in the English language, was rediscovered by monks who when transcribing it, not only cleaned it up, but added in what Christian references they could. This retelling of Beowulf feels like Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary took that story and threw the gore and sex back in (granted there wasn't much of it in the movie. Probably why it got PG-13?).

The ending was intriguing to say the least.

And I completely agree. I swear Queen Wealthrow kept looking a lot like the queen from Shrek 2, as did the other women who just looked like random CG'd figures. Interestingly enough, Grendel's mother has Angelina's face EXACTLY.

Well, the movie isn't CG. It's rotoscoped. So it makes sense that it would look like Jolie.

Though the makers of it have been quoted as saying the movie is "enhanced live action," it's actually motion capture, in the same vein that new video games are being made, such as Force Unleashed and so on. The effect is very rotoscope-like, though, reminiscent to A Scanner Darkly.

After a while, there are moments when it doesn't seem animated at all.

In my comment, I meant it say that of all the female characters, Angelina comes out the clearest and most resembling herself, whereas Robin Wright Penn's character is somewhat blockish like she came out of another CG film.

Really, it's almost unfair to just call Beowulf CG. It's almost more in the same grouping with 300 and Sin City, where in both films everything's shot on a blue/green screen while the actors are real. It's like Beowulf took the extra step and made everything computer rendered, but with the actors still performing as they would.
