Some people call carbonated drink much differently around the world. I personally say Soda. But Fennicy and I are arguing which is correct. POP just sounds so silly to me.
How do you call it!? |

Pop.
I have never heard anyone call it soda in everyday speech, ever. Outside of movies/shows, that is. (Last edited by Politician on 12-29-07 06:40 AM) |

Haha, Rogue and I talked about this recently ...
Here we sometimes use both Pop and Soda, though Pop is definitely way more common to hear. When I go up to Chicago to visit relatives though it's a different story and well, Rogue will say the same. |

Yep, I was even thinking of including this as a question I was going to pose in the Voices of Xeogaming thread.
In most of California, it's definitely soda. Others here just refer to all carbonated beverages as Coke. Not just colas. We're talking all sodas like Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Sprite, etc. I've always thought this topic rather interesting to discuss ever since I went to a summer camp at Indiana University when I was in high school and there were kids from all over the country there. Fist fights seriously broke out over it with people on each side demanding that one is more correct over the other. It's entirely a regional thing--like prefering Mr Pibb over Dr Pepper. Then again I watched an argument unfurl yesterday in Tombstone, Arizona over the pronunciation of "Pecos." The gunfighters insisted it was "Pay-kohs" while this tourist from Texas demanded that they call it "Peck-us." Strange days. |

Around here we just call it soda-pop. But I usually say the name of the drink instead.

I know EXTREMELY few people who actually call it pop. I'm always for soda, or a coke.
Pop just sounds poppingly strange. Soda sounds awesome. |

Originally posted by Rogue Im the exact same way. I had a friend in Flordia who came from wisconsin, and would call Soda beverages "Tonics", which sounds strange, but its their way of saying it. I had Tonic WATER before. And to me that tastes so great. They dont have any here in Georgia. Least, I think we do. Our Sams Club prolly has it. |

While I do ask for the particular drink by its name, saying "soda" is usually reserved for cases when you have to say things like "There's some ... in the cooler" or "Do you have any ... ?" or "What kind of ... do you have?"
Granted if it's a resaurant, chances are you're going to ask for a "fountain drink" or whatever, but still the question's pretty much asking what you call it when referring to it as a common noun and not proper. |

I call non-fizzy drinks pop occasionally, but any fizzy drink I usually call "fizzy drink". However mostly I just call the drink by its name. It saves confusion and stops my parents moaning that I'm being too vague when they ask what drink do I want them to get me from the shop.

I never even think of calling it "pop". I always either call it by name or refer to it as soda.
I forgot people even called it pop these day, but then again.. I live in California... |
