Mac vs. PC.
I go to art school now...and my career path will only expand upon that. My school "requires" a Mac..thing is, it's not like we buy the Macs from the school. They don't benefit from the purchase of these macs whatsoever. Now...I'm sitting here on a Mac that belongs to a friend of mine...and...I gotta admit, I enjoy how smoothly the programs (photoshop, flash, dreamweaver...) run on this baby. Not to mention this screen is outright gorgeous. Now, as I mentioned, the school doesn't benefit from the Mac I may or may not purchase...which makes me feel like it isn't some sort of marketing expedition (I work in retail, mind you...) and worth looking into. Thing is, they're expensive as hell. I'm not afraid to spend the money...I'm just afraid to spend it on something worthless, because I do have to spend my money sparingly... So...I want all you tech-guys (and girls ~_^ ) to sell something to me. No pressure. I'll ultimately be making the decision...I just want to make an informed decision... So, what will it be? Mac or PC? |

I think that I told you that if you bought a Mac I'd fly up there and kill you....How about a 5% discount on any laptops or desktops purchased from www.digitalstormonline.com + Whatever I can pull for you.
Hell, I can build you a PC myself and install dual boot OSX and Windows Vista/XP. for the money it would cost you for a mac, I can build you something better and have it shipped to you. Please for the love of god don't sell your soul to steve jobs. |

Spartan's biasness aside....... I've used a PC for most of my life and I got a mac laptop about a year and a half ago. I don't regret it for a second.
And if you're in school for the arts, then a mac is a more worthwhile choice. Like you said, photoshop, final cut pro etc. are all phenomenal. (Even though photoshop is on window too) I'm sure there's a reason your school is suggesting a Mac...... |

Honestly, I hate Macs, I never want to use one, and for me, they're just pointless. They irritate me, and most of its features can be replicated or beaten with a bit of work in windows.
That said, I'm going to advise you to get a Mac. They do have better art and graphical features than you could probably get on Windows, which is probably why your school is reccomending it. Just...install XP on it in the near future. |

Maybe ~8 years ago they had better graphical and artistic features...But uh get with the times and don't eat all that bullshit the pop culture guys love to feed you. Its the same hardware that PC's use the only difference is the OS... Enjoy paying more for less. Originally posted by Digital Storm Online Better then both... If you plan on doing the art stuff, Mac. Hands down. I'm a long-time PC user, and I have all that software on my PC, but I miss doing it all on the Mac. Way more capable machine for that purpose. Still good to keep a PC around, though.
But, with the new Intel duo-core Macbooks, you really don't need a PC if you're going to run Parallels or some other Windows Virtual Machine. I miss my Macbook, but it wasn't really mine, it was Yahoo's, and that went back to them when I left the company. It was a sweet machine, top of the line Macbook Pro with 4GB of RAM, the Windows Virtual Machine, and all the lovely little pieces of software for work and pleasure. But, I'm still back at my PC for now, since Macs are really expensive, and I'm not willing to shell out $2K for a laptop when I can just build a better PC. It doesn't really come down to Mac vs. PC. It comes down to Mac OS vs. Windows OS vs. Linux/UNIX OS. The machine itself is pretty irrelevant. Just stay away from Vista if you can. |

Most people don't really need Windows anyway. If you're doing the basic Office stuff, then you really don't need Windows.
And, I like the Virtual Machine. Don't need a dual-boot on a Mac. Much prefer to have the Mac OS for the purpose of UNIX/Linux and other stuff it does. But, I don't have a Mac anymores. I have my Toshiba. And my Toughbook with Fedora. Stop using my real identity. How am I supposed to be an assassin if you keep using my name? (Last edited by Stitch on 10-21-08 10:29 PM) |

I don't really know that much about Mac Computers. I run mostly on Windows 98 on my desktop and Windows 2000 on my Toshiba laptop. I'm still thinking about going to Windows XP rather than getting Vista.
I don't really use Photoshop but I use a good art program called Irfanview and it's freeware. I don't know about the features between these software programs especially Paint Shop Pro. I love ifranview because I made most of my .GIF images transparent. I don't know much about turnung .PNG images transparent. I'm planning to do a Touhou Rankset for the Acmlmboard based on Touhoumon game I playing. |

That's if you can find XP. Dell charges extra just to retrograde to XP.
Personally, Vista can suck it. I'm not budging away from XP until they fix all the issues with Vista. And, if I wanted a Mac clone interface, I'd just get a Mac. Irfanview is freeware, but I use Photoshop and Illustrator because I need more control than what Irfanview provides. I do have Irfanview on my computer, but it's just there for image captures. Not really for anything else. I can accomplish everything else needed in Paint, Photoshop, Illustrator, Gimp, and (believe it or not) Microsoft Picture dealie and Powerpoint. GG Totally disregarding my post. For best bang for your buck either have me build you something or buy something from my company etc etc. Stitch, Insectduel and FX will continue to point out their own points of view with their own experiences but with nothing in regards to bang for buck and actually getting you a system. So hit me up with a call Kate and I'll set you straight. | |||

Tis true. But it all comes down to budget costs and needs. You may get the best system that you'd like to have for whatever Spartan says he can get you, but rather that get things you don't/won't need, consider your needs first.
Develop what you want to do with the machine, what you expect to do with it, and whether you want to upgrade in a few years or just buy a new one when the time comes. Figure out if you want a laptop or desktop, and access what you need. No matter what, I still think $2000+ is too much for any system, unless you expect to use everything on that system. I'd never be able to justify spending that much on anything, and I own several computers. I don't have my Macbook Pro anymore, because it was a $2.5K machine that was provided to me by Yahoo. It went back to them when I left the company. I loved the machine, but it was used for work purposes and a bit of my personal creative stuff. In the end, I wouldn't get a Mac because of the price. I can get a comparable PC for less. Way less. But, again, it is all up to you, and no pressuring or sales tactics from anyone should ever influence what your investments should be, and a true friend would figure out the best for you without spending that much money. Which is probably why I'm still free tech support to all my friends. I charge family. |

Thank you guys sooo much...I still may end up getting a Mac someday...but only if I ever become rich to the point in which I can afford to delete the extra steps of effort. The things I will be asked to do for school IS doable on windows. It's just difficult to transfer things. These first two years won't be too bad. Though they do recommend it by sophomore year, I can get most of the work done in school and spend an hour or so after school to get the work done. But when the work becomes more extensive, staying after and using the school's computers won't be enough. I'll need to do the work on my own time at home as well. Plus I have a job, so a laptop will become vital.
I may end up getting a mac for the sheer fact that I just got my scholarship letter AND refund check and am now going to this school for the next four years for free...that makes 4,000 less a year that I thought I would have to pay out of pocket. I know it sounds like a strange reason to spend $2,000 bucks...but the fact that it's instant. That I can instantly open my files and work on them, display them...whatnot makes a BIG difference to the thought of having to worry about making sure my files transfered correctly. Like...did I say BIG? Because I meant ENORMOUSLY...hdfjghjdkf **spazzes** I can't even describe it. My lifestyle isn't "difficult" per se (Thanks to Stitch, I think I now spell "per se" correctly. ) but it's hectic. Constantly moving. Busy...I find my free time in the oddest of moments...for example, my half hour break at work, or at random times where the objects I need for school are unavailable at the time... I know this is long, so I'll try and make it short from here. $2,000 bucks doesn't sound entirely silly to me when it means that school work is less tedious, thus giving me a better shot at scoring a good grade, thus keeping my GPA at the requirements for the scholarship. So...$2,000 all together...or $16,000 if I lose my scholarship. (I know you're trying to save me money Spartan, so I wanted to point that out) As far as everything else goes...I'm going to admit...I'll have to re-read these posts and research macs and pcs (along with the advice I was given) a little more...most of the stuff went over my head. I appologize. I'm a terribly lazy reader. I prefer to have the machine in front of me and mess around, or physically see what's going on to understand it. Thank you guys soooo much for the advice though. I ask that this thread stay open though, because the decision hasn't been made final yet, so I, if no body else at least, would love to see input whether the thread ends up being bumped or what. |
