Here's an ad I ran into while checking my hotmail account. An article about how stores hook people into buying things. I already knew a few techniques they use, but some I didn't know about, and there are a couple that really do have a huge effect in causing an impulse buy. Go on, take a gander.

I never really thought about the little things like that. Some of it I'm not so surprised. My sisters bitch about the money they end up spending whenever they go shopping, and I know they've fallen for most of that crapola.
**shrugs** I'm used to being broke...so I don't really thing I fall for that kinda stuff. I prolly would though if I knew I had money to spend...My weakness is color. If it's organized and colorful, then I want it. Or I notice it, thinking that I want something from that specific section. S'why I know I wouldn't stand a chance in arts and crafts stores. I always send my friends in for me. |

It's true!!! lol. A lot of those tactics are used at the bookstore I work at. Except the "higher priced item at eye level." And the inexpensive items being crammed between the expensive. And it's true, our customer service desk IS far away from both exits (in the middle). hah.

You're damn right they're overpriced. At the Dollar General I work at, here's the prices: 2 liter GeneriCola (that's not the name, but I wish it was): $0.75 2 liter Coke, Pepsi, Etc.: $1.15 20 oz. Coke, Pepsi, Etc., near the register: $1.25 If you're not seeing the problem, look at the sizes. Also:
Do those of us who work at the store a favor and put it back yourself. If we get bogged down dealing with people changing their minds and making us put their crap back, we get bitched at when we don't get everything else done on time. It's not such a problem at the Dollar General, since it's such a small store that even with only two people working at a time, putting something back doesn't take much time. But in a bigger store like a Martin's or a Wal-Mart, there's no way the cashier's going to be able to put it back, and no guarantee they can catch someone else who will. Who'd put it back? The stockers aren't usually there in the afternoon and evening, the cleaning people are usually too busy, y'know, cleaning... 'course, if people would just stick to their lists... I can say from experience Martin's didn't... the baggers did that. The baggers also had to get the carts, and sometimes (every freaking day, in my case) had to gather the trash and clean the floors. This on top of, y'know, bagging groceries, and anything else the managers needed done (I also restocked the milk section and helped rearrange the seasonal aisles once).
I'd say we had better things to do than put shit back where it was supposed to go. I don't know exactly how big the store was, but it had 23 aisles, as well as a produce section that was approximately three aisles wide. Even after working there for seven months, I didn't know where a lot of the crap we sold was actually supposed to go. (Last edited by Astrophel on 11-18-08 07:48 PM) |

God, I wish customers knew that at WinCo! Not only will they stash crap RIGHT UNDER THE CONVEYOR BELT, but the items stashed are usually perishable! What, too embarrassed to say, "I don't want this after all"? |

There's about 2 feet of space on the end of the belts. The option of sandwiching the stuff between 2 magazines never seems to fail either.

Wow, that is just sad.
And Astrophel, I totally agree with you on the soda thing. Once though I found 20oz. Wild cherry pepsi at the 99 cent only store and was in happy land. Clearly I need to quit drinking soda. |
