Zoso and I went to a test screening of it today. The movie isn't coming out until October, and the screening that we saw was mostly to see if all of the actors work in their parts. If enough people thought someone was terrible they might still re-film some things or maybe replace them.

Seriously, though, the movie has some really cool sideshow scenes, but a quarter into the film it all goes downhill and becomes a rip-off of every teen vampire flick out there.

If you're concerned about spoilers, be aware of the following:

The story goes that two friends, Darren and Steve, are given a flyer for a late night, underground freak show performance. They go. Steve realizes one of the performers is a vampire he's read about and after the show accosts the performer demanding to be made a vampire. The vampire refuses saying Steve's blood tastes evil.

Meanwhile Darren steals a rare, very poisonous spider from the performer which he uses in his act. The spider gets out at school and bites Steve, putting him into a coma.

Darren goes to the vampire asking for an antidote and the vampire pretty much says, "I'm gonna make you a half-vampire and you're going to be my assistant."

Uh.. k.

Throughout all of this, there's a stand-off between vampires and vampanese (pretty much evil vampires... yeah, seriously). Steve becomes a vampanese and starts looking like the spiky-haired, pale-skinned vampires from Twilight.

Darren is instructed on how to be a good vampire, how to "flit," and how to use his nails as a weapon.

Darren and Steve have a showdown in the end. Neither die, but now they've started a war that's going to be fought in the inevitable sequels.

John C. Reilly plays the vampire who make Darren a "half-vampire." His acting, when he's trying to be serious is horribly cheesy, like most of the movie.

Oh god. So, so cheesy.

Well, Cirque du Freak is a teenager book series. There's some 10 odd books, I think. Everyone's playing off the whole Twilight thing. =/ Twilight wasn't anything to be hyped up over either, IMO. Crappy, predictable story, teenage drama with some vampires thrown in, with a perfect main character. meh. /rant

You neglected to mention that it also as if written by a 4th grader with loathsome syntax and conjugation. I could find more prominent manuscription within a stool.

And that's the funny thing about Cirque du Freak. It's written by an adult male who pretty much wrote his own little fantasy world with himself as the main character.

Twilight, Cirque du Freak, Blood and Chocolate, etc... they're all just a bunch of Mary Sues.

EDIT: I forgot to mention another one... The Sookie Stackhouse books. UGH!! I read the first one a few years ago. Terrible fucking Mary Sue.

I guess they're just not my cup of miscellaneous caffeinated beverage.

There's just something about Sookie. She's too perfect. Telepathic, virtuous waitress whom all the charming, debonair vampires are head of heels for or otherwise deeply fascinated in. Feels like a Mary Sue.

Eh, I guess teen lit has a ton of characters like that.

I was reading the Bloody Jack books, but after I finished the third book, it felt like the lead female character had become more and more of a Mary Sue. I kinda feel compelled to read the other three books, but I'm actually really annoyed with it. Hmmm...

Twilight = Retarded

Seriously, I've never seen it but a friend who is obsessed with it explained all of it to me and it sounds so utterly dumb that I wanted to punch her in the face. That, and if I see one more girl calling herself Bella I will scream.

I miss good vampire movies. I <3 Dracula!

Brandon's aunt has been reading the Twilight books and getting all excited about them. Apparently she went to the midnight screening of it and couldn't get over how "adorable" all the preteen girls were with how they were wearing "Team Edward" and "Team Jacob" (I think those are the characters' names) shirts.

I can't get into that crap. Although I haven't read any of the Twilight books, I'm quite sure I'd hate them, just like I heartily disliked the Sookie Stackhouse stories.

Anyway, regarding Cirque du Freak, I completely forgot to mention it, but the whole mode of transforming someone into a vampire could not be even lamer (even... gay)---the vampire (played by John C. Reilly) and the kid stand facing each other, their hands in front of them, fingers pressed against each others. John C. Reilly pulls back and quickly pricks the boy's fingers with his nails, and they "exchange" blood this way.

Suddenly he's a half-vampire.

Good god is it fucking stupid.

Well, vampire stories have always said that that's how you become a vampire, through a blood transfer. :-P

That said though, I think that the plot(not the cheesiness) of this movie actually sounds airly interesting. Two friends join opposite side of a war and are forced to fight aganst each other, In the right hands, that sounds like it could be interesting. In the wrong hands, and, well, that looks like what we have here.
