I just got home from a 5-mile round-trip hike to a waterfall and hanging out at a museum. I'm currently watching extras on the Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter DVD that was just released this week (it's outstanding! Especially if you've read the book). I'm also getting ready to go to Rocky Horror tonight because some of the golden age performers are coming tonight.

Anyway, despite the minor health issues, life's been good. I'm still trying/learning a new thing every day. Every weekend's been a new adventure, I guess, be it a Civil War re-enactment, a powwow, hiking in the mountains, festivals, swimming in the ocean and feeling the fish swim around me, trying all kinds of new foods.

Today when Brandon and I were hiking, a western rattlesnake slithered out in front of us. We stood still, and it continued across the trail. When it got the brush it, rattled away and we quickly walked on down the trail. Several other hikers mentioned seeing other snakes as well, occasionally we heard rattles in the bushes. It was just sort of funny, like the snake was practically saying, "Don't mind me, I'm just gonna cross the trail now. See ya later!"

I've also got a big interview lined up, but I don't want to jinx it. If it happens I'll post the link on the board.

Got a new chair I rescued off a curb. So comfy to sit in. My cat even fights to get to sit and sleep in it. Kinda ties the room together.

I aced my sociology exam, passed my ethics written test, and interviewed a congresswoman I admire.

Brandon's band Voidcrush has a show tomorrow. They had one a couple weeks back, and I shot a new photoshoot with them.

Spent some time with Christina while she was in town. I've missed her and the baby so much. It was great talking with her at the Voidcrush show a couple weeks ago.

So yeah, there's plenty to be happy about. Fuck dizziness, though.

My fiancee made Ceviche, Peru style, and it tasted bloody wonderful! I had never had it before and it's one of my favorite foods now. Raw fish at it's best, that's for sure!

Back from Rocky. I feel so old among all the young people. So many of them virgins. But then again, they completely bust up on the most basic lines I was shouting out alongside Becky.

Devo, playing Brad, freakin' jumped me in the audience at the end, I don't know how he ended up curled up in my lap, how Brandon and I ended up tickling him, or how I ended up motorboating him in the spotlight, but it was hilarious at the time.

God, it feels good to smugly plop myself in my seat after the pre-show host asks during the pledge, "If you've seen this movie in a theater with a cast more than 100 times, sit down."

Since my doctor didn't have my chest x-rays and other test results for me when I went in for my follow-up appointment a couple days ago, she said she'd call me tomorrow (yesterday) if there was anything wrong, high, or positive.

Didn't get a call from her yesterday.

In other news I got my press badge from the paper. Hurrah. And my picture on it actually looks nice.

I finally finished my Hatsune Miku render in Blender and I'm very pleased, although I see too many flaws now that I've been showing it off. Oh well, I might as well start a new project instead of wasting more time on it, everyone else seems to enjoy it enough!

Edit: Disregard that, I'm still having fun with it.

I found a light beer I like at the Rock Bottom Brewery, which is something I never thought I would find.

Penguins knocked the Flyers out of the Stanely Cup playoffs and advance to the next round.

I got nifty headphones from snuggbuds.com for half price because I met the owner at the Long Beach Bike Fest. The style I wanted was out of stock then, so he said to contact them on the website when they were back in stock and he'd give them to me half price, and they did, which is awesome! And I apparently get 25% off for the rest of the year. W00t.

Finished last essay for Byzantine class a week early.

Is it Pelican Red? I'm a sucker for the reds.

Hmmm... I've been a little mentally-taxed lately, but there are still several things to be happy about.

- I just got home from a late night dinner with Brandon, Patrick, and Lee (who surprised us with flying into town yesterday). We had just spent a couple hours on the beach watching and photographing the grunion run. I was the one idiot who kept where I was when the waves rolled in and the grunion started mating on my feet and right at my toes. My feet feel raped.

- I set the curve on my last history of the mass media exam. And when we went over the answers, he found another question he thought he messed up so he lowered the maximum another point, and I ended up with 105%.

- I've been doing a lot of hiking on the weekends, as Brandon and I are picking up active hobbies to help us be less sedentary. We hiked 5+ miles yesterday with Lee, exploring ruins of burned-out houses, checking out nearby waterfalls, and getting an insane work-out walking up this mountain.

Lee & Brandon hiking
Lee and Brandon crossing one of the creeks yesterday.

- I got a story on the front page of the Daily Titan above the fold this week. It was really cool interviewing retired marines.

- Christina's gonna be in town soon! And we're going to faire together.

- Lee's in town!!

- My parents got me a big bag of fruits and nuts from Trader Joe's. Hooray!

- Brandon and I tried a bunch of new restaurants, hung around beautiful costumed-folks at this event in L.A., went to a few cultural festivals, found a few new bands I adore, and celebrated our 5-year anniversary last weekend.

Actually it was the Cyclone Light Lager. The Pelican Red is also good though, Ben loves it which is cool because he normally doesn't like red ales. We got the premium sampler so we got to try all of them. Didn't like the Signal Hill one, but otherwise they were all good.

All right, I'm finally going to try this one again. Seemed like every time I'd write up a post for this thread my computer would overheat, Firefox would crash, or I'd have to to back to class. *Sigh*

Well, time marches on. I need to flay out some stuff anyway. It'd be nice to concentrate on the positive things.

School: Passed all of my classes this past semester with at least a B or better. Hooray for not having to take that bullshit sociology class ever again!

I'm taking a summer session geology class with a teacher I really like. Knocking out 4 units in the process. Class is pretty much over in less than 2 weeks.

"Work": Going to start my paying job as a features editor in August. Pay's not amazing, but any money's good.

Voidcrush, for whom I'm a roadie, drum tech, photog and so on, has been opening for a horror rock musical in Santa Monica. The show's pretty good. The musical's based on a grade-B horror flick from the '60s called "Spider Baby." It's hilariously bad. Makes for one funny and fucked up stage show. Almost Rocky Horror-like.

Other: Christina was in town for a month not long ago. We went to faire together, Bogfest, several restaurants and such. We drove up to San Francisco together and stayed with Lee and wandered around town together.

Next happy thought, spent some time with Lee. Went to San Mateo Maker Faire, found a late night pinball club to hang at, ate some odd ice cream and so on together. While I was up there, I wandered around San Francisco by myself. Went to the Cartoon Art Museum and snuck a fondle of Rorschach's sign while checking out the other exhibits, walked through Chinatown, the Embarcadero... seriously all over. If I weren't concerned with jaywalking across the Golden Gate Bridge, I'd have walked the outline of the peninsula.

Anime Expo is next week. With Comic-Con only a few weeks after that. Hurrah!!

Still racking up some new experiences. Good stuff.

Today I rang up a very large order. A shopping cart full of stuff.

Almost all of it - the exception being just three umbrellas - is being donated to a local food pantry. Total value: roughly $100.

This really requires no further explanation.

Huh, time to post something happy.

I got my stitches out a couple days ago. Can't kneel on that knee yet, and I have trouble with stairs, but I'm not limping while walking on even surfaces anymore.

My mom went in to get another breast lump checked out and was told it hasn't grown any bigger since they started monitoring it in October. Even though I'm concerned about the lump, it's not growing as voraciously as cancer tends to.

We went to faire yesterday. Had great interviews with Stu from the Boggards and had this great interview with Shelby and Todd in the meadow sitting close together.

I'm very thankful for the way this school year has been, even with a few of the bumps. I've interviewed and met so many interesting and amazing people and covered so many different events. I got drunk for the first time in my life, had to get stitches for the first time, learned to throw knives, spoke at USC, got dyhydrated and sunstroked and was saved by surfers, went on several roadtrips and covered practically a convention every month. And on top of it all, I made a lot of friends.

Egad, and I got a Facebook.

How did the alcohol finally get you?

My own happy stuff...

I graduate next month (yay)
Ben and I celebrated our second anniversary yesterday with food, mini golf, ice cream, and a movie... I love cheapy theaters. And the Whale and Ale in San Pedro is AMAZING. Totally want to go back again soon.

We were at a bar doing dollar beers for a couple hours, and I drank around 10 beers in the span of an hour and a half. We were all pretty wasted. One of our friends went to the bathroom and punched a paper towel dispenser off the wall. When he got back to the table and told us he did it, we all busted up laughing (for the most part thinking he was just full of shit, but being drunk everything's funny) until he picked up his beer and noticed his hand was all bloody.

I apparently need to look at this thread more often.

Anyway, things to be happy about.

It's CON SEASON!!! Just got through with Anime Expo, and we've got Comic-Con in a few weeks. This year we've already done Comic Expo, Anaheim Comic Con, L.A. Rock'n Comic Con, Strategicon, Lebowski Fest, the really small GeekCon, and a brief stint at WyrdCon. Throw in the occasional Renaissance or maker faire, out-of-state or otherwise, and it's been a pretty satisfying year geek-wise.

Already making plans for festivals and gatherings next year.

I've done something every weekend this year. I don't feel like I'm vegging.

While I'm sad to see old friends leave, I'm happy to have some old friends back.

And, Brandon and I hit our 6 year mark a few months back.

I'm starting what will be my last year in college. With any luck I'll be graduating a double-major in May.

I'm super stoked seeing as I'm taking an English class specifically on graphic novels. While at a midnight release party for the last Scott Pilgrim book I ran into this girl who was in a computer science class with me. Amid talking comics, turns out she's taking the graphic novel class too. Sweet!

I'm working on a big story for the paper that I'm extremely excited and nervous about. I'll just say that I'm interviewing an author who went to our university. More on it later.

I've been writing for my friends' geek site. Good times.

Con season went well. I got to meet the MythBusters. Took a lot of pictures of cosplayers. Read a lot of new comics. Watched a lot of anime.

Although things are quiet this week, still got to go out and watch some plays, go to a video game launch party at the cosplay cafe, hang out with one of my best friends in from out of town at a pirate rock show, watch the Perseids, among other things.

I'm on 35mb internet, and there's a chance, depending on how reliable my housemate is, that I'll have it in my home soon enough. There's nothing like a gigabit every 20 minutes to make a person happy.

In other news, my Europe trip seems to all be coming together. I'm defiantly happy about that, unless something was to go wrong..then I would be quite upset.

Things are finally starting to fall into place regarding my graduating in the spring. I have the minimum number of units to walk at the ceremony. I'm taking 15 units now, and I just need 9 next semester.

I finally got the Titan Degree Audit people to look over my case and update my transcript to reflect what I've taken so I don't have to sweat some of my GEs not showing up anymore.

The American studies department, being a totally kick-ass chunk of the college of humanities if I do say so myself, also input some classes into their section of my TDA, double-counting comm classes and such, in order to help me graduate right away.

And, woot, no school on Monday.

It seems small, but I'm happy that I finally got my desk out of my room and that, after measuring, Brandon's desk should be able to fit in this alcove in one of the corners.

Next up is taking the dresser out, and then rearranging the room. I hate having so much furniture.

I just got a copy of the media law book that this picture I took was printed in. I'm also in the acknowledgments. I dig it.

I'm not making any money off the printing, but I'm getting a few copies of the book a year.

I've agreed that the picture can be used for a few years. Hell, if she wants she can use it as long as she likes.

I also finally went over to the newspaper office to secure a photographer for this interview I'm doing next week.

I'm feeling productive today and that makes me happy. And sweet, after my class tonight, it's just my graphic novel class tomorrow and I'm done for the week. Hawt.
